This Same Earth by Elizabeth Hunter

The Elemental Mysteries, Book 2

Synopsis: Beatrice De Novo thought she had left the supernatural world behind…for the most part. But when the past becomes the present, will she leave her quiet life in Los Angeles to follow a mystery she thought had abandoned her? Where has Giovanni Vecchio been, and why has he returned? Giovanni has his own questions, and he’s looking to her for answers.

review : This book takes place five years after the end of the first one; therefore many events happened during all this time. It’s true I was very surprised by the end of the last novel, but we can here understand the reasons. Beatrice is now well settled in her town and after waiting so long for the return of Giovanni, she has now a new life, despite the vampire’s ghost is always with her.
But wouldn’t it be too easy if the story stayed like that? Indeed, I had many questions about her father and I was so curious to know everything about him. We also knew it couldn’t be the end of Lorenzo and I wondered what he would do this time.
The Beatrice’s life is turned upside down from the start of the novel with the unexpected return of Gio who only wants one thing, to take the young woman back and to be able to stay with her forever (really! Forever!). I think it’s one of the difficult parts of the book, because of course it’s quite heart breaking for B and for us. Plus, it’s so sad to see her like that, so confused, hurt and in love with the man who left her for so long. I found that the author did a great job with the description of the feelings of each character. It’s easy to understand all of them and we can see the B.’s difficulties for their future relationship.
Let us return to the Beatrice’s father. I had big hopes for this novel, to have some big revelations but it wasn’t finally what I expected. It’s not a problem, not at all, because what we learn is also very important and interesting. It’s therefore a good thing to have a gradual evolution of the series, and I think we will understand a lot of things with the third volume regarding the story. We’re closer and closer to her father and one day, I hope, we will have a real meeting. I was very touched by all the letters at the end of the book; it was so beautiful and so sad.
We also meet a lot of characters from the Carwyn’s family. I really enjoy this vampire and it was a real pleasure to learn more about him and his children even if the conditions are quite complicated.
I won’t add more things because it’s finally easy to relate the important events but I really enjoyed this second volume and I’m curious to see the evolution of the story for the third one, to learn the choices of B. and Lorenzo.

  1. I’ve never heard of this book before, but it does sound very interesting! I will have to look up the first book. 🙂

Thanks for the review. I love it when you find good books that really capture the character’s feelings.

    Best wishes,

    Alexandra~

  2. Five years after the first one? Oh my wow, that’s a really big gap — I’m intrigued! 🙂 Usually sequels start off right after or only a few months after the first, but I’m really curious to see how the author would deal with the character development that takes place after five years! And from looking at the cover, I had no idea that this was a vampire series… so the face that it IS makes me excited!!

Awesome review as always, Mel! 🙂 <3
