Mist by Susan Krinard

Mist, Book 1

Synopsis: Centuries ago, all was lost in the Last Battle when the Norse gods and goddesses went to war. The elves, the giants, and the gods and goddesses themselves were all destroyed, leaving the Valkyrie Mist one of the only survivors.

Or so she thought.

When a snowy winter descends upon modern-day San Francisco in June, Mist’s quiet existence starts to feel all too familiar. In quick succession, Mist is attacked by a frost giant in a public park and runs into an elf disguised as a homeless person on the streets…and then the man Mist believed was her mortal boyfriend reveals himself to be the trickster god, Loki, alive and well after all these years.

Loki has big plans for the modern world, and he’s been hanging around Mist for access to a staff that once belonged to the great god Odin. Mist is certain of one thing: Loki must be stopped if there is to be any hope for Earth. But the fight is even bigger than she knows….

Because Loki wasn’t the only god to survive.

Review: I love stories about mythology, so when I saw this book, I could not help but being drawn to the story. It was also a nice surprise, and I really enjoyed learning more about the Susan Krinard’s world.

Mist is a young woman disillusioned by life, and even if centuries ago she was one of the most feared valkyries, all that has changed now. The loss of the great battle as well as the disappearance of the gods she served, changed her life forever. Now she leads a quiet life away from problems, keeping the gift of the gods she received with great attention. But while she spins the perfect love with Eric, her boyfriend of the moment, her fate will be turned upside down in a second, catapulting her into a world she thought forever forgotten. Her boyfriend is far from the man she thought, as he is actually Loki, the god she thought gone. And after 6 months of relationship with him, he leaves her and steals her precious weapon, the object she protected for centuries. And when she meets an elf, the same one who started the last war and must team up with him to try to counter Loki, she did not expect to make so many discoveries about her true identity.

I loved all the revelations we had in the novel. The nature of Mist is really amazing and I really enjoyed the track throughout the story. I must say that she will have so many things in her life. She did not even really have time to realize what happens to her. She is one of the most courageous women. Indeed, she is not afraid to put her life in danger as long as she has a purpose in her life. She likes more than anything the world in which she lives and she will do anything to save it. Dainn, this strange elf is also there to help her, but his mission is a little against his personal feelings and I admit that I was curious to see what he would do and which side he would take at the end. He is a rather contradictory character and it is quite complicated to decide about his fate. Of course there are other amazing characters and we take pleasure in discovering them all and I can not wait to learn more about them.

I liked the ideas of the author. Her world, her characters and plot are fascinating and we read it all with a great pleasure. The gods are highlighted here, as well as their followers and it was fascinating to see that flowed. Urban fantasy and fantasy are mixed here to give us an amazing story. It was a really unique book and if you are, like me, an adept of mythology, gods and other mythical figures, I would recommend this lovely first volume.
