Slated by Teri Terry

Slated, Book 1

Synopsis: Kyla’s memory has been erased,
her personality wiped blank,
her memories lost for ever.

She’s been Slated.

The government claims she was a terrorist and that they are giving her a second chance – as long as she plays by their rules. But echoes of the past whisper in Kyla’s mind. Someone is lying to her, and nothing is as it seems. Who can she trust in her search for the truth?

Review: I have this book in my TBR pile for a long time but I thought it was time to find out more about the Teri Terry’s story. I had seen many different opinions about the novel, so I did not really know what to expect.

From the beginning of the story we discover Kyla, this young 16 year old girl who has just been erased. Yes, because in this world, every criminal who is not yet 17 is entitled to a second chance. For that, they erase their memory and restore them to a new family so they can try to return to a normal life. Yet they are far from being like all the other children and wear a bracelet controlling their emotions constantly. In fact, these young characters must constantly monitor what is displayed, because if for example it discreases too much, they risk their own lives (as the bracelet is neutralizing them). But in addition, they are also unable to fight or to replicate whatever the occasion. Yes, Kyla is found in this environment, with a new family. But our heroine is herself very different from others … She has nightmares, she remembers things she should not, she asks questions she should kept and despite her desire to integrate, she seems to be stronger. Still trying to keep a low profile, she will discover very soon that there are flaws in the system in which they live, and even her family is not what it seems.

I really enjoyed the story and it’s true that I wondered throughout the novel what we would find out about the past of the young woman. I was really curious to know what she could have done to be in such a situation. In the end even if it is true that we do not learn much, I look forward to read Volume 2 to find out more. Many events are initiated here, allowing us then to understand the details of the world of the author. We do not know who to trust, but we know that the answers will come thereafter. Kyla is quite fragile girl, and at the same time she has an incredible strength. She does not understand who she is and how to act. She would like confide her thoughts but it is so difficult for her to find out who is really there for her. Yet it may well be that she finds an ally in the last person she thought. We meet through her many characters at the same time and I admit that I am quite curious to learn more about each of them.

To conclude I can say that it was a good start to the story that introduces us to a whole new world. There is still much to discover and I want to know what the author will have for the readers in the sequel.

  1. Hmm, intriguing. I really like the premise behind this book, and now you’ve got me wondering what Kyla might have done to have her labeled a criminal and slated. I hope you got to know at least that much by the end of the book!

  2. I’ve been curious about this one for awhile too. I’m glad you enjoyed it despite having quite a few unanswered questions. I’ll probably read this too, but maybe I’ll wait until the series has progressed a bit more 😉

  3. I read this one back when it came out a few years ago, I can’t remember much about it (it didn’t really stick out that much to me) but I did enjoy it, and I don’t usually read much British novels/ writers, so it made me enjoy it more. I had a few issues with it, mainly because I just felt detached from the story and Kyla, and I didn’t really get the romance but hey, It was good nonetheless and I do love when you can’t trust anybody so you don’t know who to trust. You do get more into the story and understand a lot about Kyla in the next book though, so can’t wait to see what you think on that one! 🙂

  4. I have had this one in my TBR pile forever as well. I will be starting it soon though because my oldest wants to read it and I like to read them before she does just in case. 😉

Great review, I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  5. Oh I love stories like this Melliane! Stories where the protagonist can’t remember who they are or what their life was like before. My super curious side just gets all excited trying to figure things out. Can’t wait to give this series at try, it seems to get all rave reviews!

  6. Interesting premise, I’m not sure I’ll be picking this up tho because I’m hit or miss with this genre and types of stories. Will wait for your review of all the books before I decide to bandwagon LOL

  7. This one is on my radar, for sure. But I hate waiting for the next book to be released. I’m going to wait until it’s further along and it does look like it will be a fabulous series! Great review Melliane! 🙂

  8. So glad you enjoyed it, D.! This is one of the stronger dystopians I’ve read in recent years, and your review just reminded me that I need to pick the other two books in this series up. 🙂
