Discovery by Brina Courtney

Synopsis: Discoveries can be dangerous. Discoveries can be deadly.

Nine months ago, Teagan Matthew’s boyfriend disappeared and took her sense of stability with him. But when the opportunity to live with her aging grandmother in Salem arises, she decides it’s time to get on with her life. A new home, a new job, and new friends are adding up to a beautiful summer…

… until a young girl’s body shows up one night in town, wearing pentagram necklace exactly like Teagan’s.

Now a guy looking remarkably like her missing boyfriend has arrived in Salem along with a mysterious stranger who may have some answers that Teagan has desperately been searching for.

Teagan must now decide who to trust. It’s a matter of life… and her death.

Review: Discovery is quite your average witches’ book. The heroine, Teagan, doesn’t believe one second in supernatural legends, but when strange events and attitudes from people around her become more and more frequent, she is forced to wonder. This causes her grandmother to reveal the truth her entire family has been hiding from her for so long: witches do exist. She even is one of them. And obviously these witches are divided into two opposite clans: the evil ones vs. the good ones.

As you can see, the synopsis doesn’t escape from clichés. Yet it didn’t prevent me from enjoying it a lot. It’s a short and pretty fast paced book, and the mysteries and revelations quickly drew me in. I ended up finishing the book in one sitting!

I must also add that I have a soft spot for witches’ stories. They might well be my favorite kind of paranormal literature.

I liked the characters very much. I especially appreciated the fact that we were dealing with characters aged up to 20 or so. Being in my twenties myself, I find it easier to connect with characters this age than with the teenagers you usually encounter in Young Adult books.

I don’t really know what to think of Teagan. Let’s say she was okay as the heroine, but she wasn’t particularly awesome either. At least she wasn’t naïve unlike almost all heroines in YA paranormal novels. This might comes with her being older, but anyway it was a huge quality in her favor since naïve characters quickly get on my nerves.

The character who strucks me the most however was Lark, Teagan’s new friend, all smiling and enjoying life to the fullest. You can’t do anything but wish to be her friend too! And then there’s Seth, the handsome and mysterious guy with his Irish accent. He might not get his place on the list of my favorite male characters ever, but I did thoroughly enjoy the relationship between him and Teagan (but beware, romance only is a small part of the book)

As much as I did enjoy this read, I still regret that the author didn’t go deeper on some parts of her story. In fact, I think the book lacks descriptions and history about how the two clans of witches were created. Add a writing style pretty fast paced and even a little expeditious at times on top of that and the result is that although I read it very fast, I never really dived into the story. Somehow I just felt like I skimmed through the whole book. I did really have a great time with Teagan, Seth, Lark and the others but I am pretty sure that in a couple of months I’ll have forgotten about this book already.

In short, Discovery is a pretty nice book which is perfect if you need an easy and entertaining read to kill a few hours. Deepening into some aspects of the storyline would have made it more memorable though. I don’t know if there will be a sequel, but if there is I might definitely read it. If the little flaws were corrected it could really become a great saga!

I recommend this book to you if: you like witches’ stories.

  1. I actually didn’t pick up this book revolved around witches just by the synopsis lol it was your review that made me realize it :$ Either way it sounds like an interesting story even if it does have a few cliches! I’m interested in what all the secrets could be! Lovely review :!

  2. Hmmm . . . I’m not sure this one is for me. My TBR is already out of control, and I’ve been limiting the few quick, easy reads I have time for to safer bets then this sounds like. I do really like books about witches though . . . so maybe 😉 Thanks for sharing!

  3. Irish accent you say? *swoons* I have a thing for accents, Irish or Scottish ones in particular, so I think I’ll be a big fan of Seth:) Too bad this one didn’t delve deeper into some aspects of the story, but it sounds like it was a solid enough read overall:) Lovely review!

  4. Short and fast paced are kind of like my guilty pleasure books, it does sound cliché but if it doesn’t stop you from enjoying it, then why not? Teagan does sound pretty average, but at least she avoids the stupid YA usually follows, haha. 🙂

  5. I haven’t read a witch book in some time. Sounds like this one would be a good one to kick back and relax with. 🙂 Thank you.

  6. I love witches too and it’s sad that this fell short in describing and explaining the witches’ history. But since it’s fast-paced and entertaining I might check this out for when I’m looking for something light. 🙂
