Cursed by S. J. Harper

Fallen Siren, Book 1

Synopsis: Meet FBI Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong.
She’s cursed. He’s damned. Together, they make one hell of a team.

Emma Monroe is a Siren, cursed by the gods and bound to earth to atone for an ancient failure. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now that she works missing persons cases for the FBI, it could be just a rescue away. Unless her new partner leads her astray.

Special Agent Zack Armstrong just transferred into the San Diego Field Office. He’s a werewolf, doing his best to beat back the demons from his dark and dangerous past. As a former Black Ops sniper, he’s taken enough lives. Now he’s doing penance by saving them.

Emma and Zack’s very first case draws them deep into the realm of the paranormal, and forces them to use their own supernatural abilities. But that leaves each of them vulnerable, and there are lines partners should not cross. As secrets are revealed and more women go missing, one thing becomes clear: as they race to save the victims, Emma and Zack risk losing themselves.

Review: I saw different reviews about this book but it is true that the synopsis immediately attracted me when it came out. Once purchased, it is true that it took me almost a year before starting it. I must tell you that it was a big mistake because I had a great time with the novel. The advantage? I just have to wait for a few months before read the second book and I’ll be able to get into the prequel pretty quickly too. So yes, unlike some people I really fell for the novel and for the ideas of the authors. Did I not say that the novel is written by two different authors? I find it quite impressive to see the union of two people on a same series. I’m sure that it isn’t easy to achieve something like that on a daily basis.

Let’s go back to the story. Emma is a siren, a young woman who works for the FBI to solve cases of missing persons. But now she must work with a new partner and it is none other than a former lover she hoped never to see again. Not that she does not like him, it is not even where the problem is because love itself is completely forbidden for her on pain of dire consequences. Zack is a werewolf who knows nothing of the nature of the young woman, but hiding their secrets will be much more complicated than they had imagined. While they both team up to discover the reason behind the disappearances, the situation gets complicated. Disappearances accumulate leading them in the heart of a vampires story, blackmail and money, and both tries to get out of all this as much as they can. However, in addition, the Zack’s past resurfaces, splashing at the same time Emma who will have to find a solution to this.

What exactly about our two heroes Zack and Emma? I really enjoyed the story of the heroine and the myth that emerges from her story about gods and her hope for redemption to return to the pantheon. This is a strong young woman who remains yet looking for love without anything being possible for her. It is very sad to see her succumb gradually to Zack knowing that in the end nothing is possible and it is true that I was curious to see how it would be resolved. Her meetings here will surely also have a big impact in the following novels and I hope soon to see what will happen. Regarding Zack, he is a very mysterious man and it is true that even if we learn some bits of his story, we still have so much to learn and I hope we will know more in the next book . The end is also pretty heartbreaking but I’ll let you discover it by yourself.

I also took a lot of fun with the plot and the investigation of our two heroes. I was very curious to find out what happened and who was responsible and I must say that the authors have beautifully carried the story because it is impossible for the reader to discover not even a piece of truth as it is much broader than we might think. To conclude, as I said at the beginning of my review, I had a great time with this first novel and I am more than impatient to read more! A beautiful discovery mixing magic, creatures of all kinds and a plot that keeps the reader in suspense throughout the volume. A must read.

  1. i have been interested by this book too but i still haven’t gotten it… now the heartbreaking ending makes me hesitate a little though….

i didn’t know it was written by two authors in fact but i have the prequel so if i become addicted i guess i will try to get my hand on it sooner than later^^

  2. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one!! And with a 4.5 rating…you know it’s good. I’ve done that, downloaded a book and it’s not until a year later I read it and think…why the heck did I wait so long?!

    Fabulous review my friend…

  3. Hhaha lol, I bought some books 3 years ago and haven’t read them yet…Yeaah…at least yes you get to read the sequel quicker. 😉 I love FBI themed movies but haven’t read many books with those. Guess it could be a good one for starters. Great review!

  4. I don’t think I’ve heard of this one before, but it’s certainly my kind of read! I love urban fantasy and the siren thing is very cool. And, of course, it’s always great when you can’t guess what’s coming. Great review, off to add this one to my tbr!

    • I loved the idea! Yes more than that she is not our average siren so it was really interesting. I know some were mixed so it’s a hit or a miss but it was a hit for me. I hpe it will be the same for you.

  5. Ahhh, I love read books/series that are written by two authors, it’s always interesting to see if they mesh together well, if you can tell where one author starts and ends to the next. I’ve had some good and bad experiences with that, but it sounds like it’s done well! Annnnnd, I love anything to do with federal cases, so sounds like my kind of read. 🙂

  6. I’m glad you liked this, Melliane! I thought the premise was very cool–I love Greek mythology, but I couldn’t get past the present tense of the narrative 🙁 I’ll keep an eye on the series though. Maybe future installments will be different.
