Synopsis: Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always. And there’s no delete button. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school – but no one knows it. Most people – her teachers and doctors included – don’t think she’s capable of learning, and up until recently her school days consisted of listening to the same preschool-level alphabet lessons again and again and again.
If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows… but she can’t, because Melody can’t talk. She can’t walk. She can’t write.
Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind – that is, until she discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever. At last Melody has a voice… but not everyone around her is ready to hear it.
Review: One page and a half… That’s the time it took me to know that I was going to love this book.
No, actually. I only had to read one line of the synopsis, but I didn’t want to brag, you know ? haha
Out of my mind is a book that could affect anyone, in my opinion. The story of a child growing up with her handicap – Fearless spirit stuck in a broken body. Her words, sometimes resigned, sometime revolted, always tinged with poetry and an incredible sweetness.
The author offers us a just and true narrative which makes us learns to see through the eyes of a different person (or more precisely, of a normal child trapped in a body which doesn’t obey to her, leading other people to think that she is different).
What I liked :
– The Emotions that this book created in me. Torrents of condolence, love and anger in front of certain situations that Melody has to face.
– Her incredible intelligence and photographic memory make of Melody a person full of information of all kinds. I had the occasion to learn a lot of things in this book, dealing with sicknesses or other lighter subjects. I think that when we finish a book with « something » like here, the author made a success of his work. If he brings us knowledge on certain subjects or if he contributes to bring us something (a lesson of life, one moment of happiness, a new interest for something that we didn’t know about) an author will have made a success of his work if he allows us to be enriched by his work, in a way or another.
– A writing so poetic, peaceful and just… I don’t really know how to explain it, but there is something beautiful in these words. Melody, the main character is the narrator, and through her words, we can only find that she is a beautiful person… Is it strange to say that? … Let’s say it’s not !:D
What I didn’t like :
– I want MORE
Anyway, I fell in love with this book full of sweetness. I really recommend it to you with all my heart ! And for everyone, whatever you like to read because even if you only read fantasy books (for example), this book really worth the exception!
Read it if : You want a calm read which affects you from the first to the last page.
Don’t read it if : You don’t like to read ! SERIOUSLY WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE IN THAT CASE ?! (Just kidding, stay please, I love you).
Wow, this book sounds so different! I’ve never heard of it before, but it’s interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Haha, so embarrassing, I was copying my comment and it didn’t copy the right one. Sorry, you can delete that!
What I meant to say was:
Haha! See, that’s why I always say I know if I’m going to not like a book within the first 5 pages, because you can tell, same with if you’re going to love it. So glad you did! 😀
no problems, deleted it
Lol, all right, all right, I’m going to read it, take it easy 🙂 I mean, how could I refuse such an invitation?!? Great review, you’ve got me all curious about this. So, well done.
Okay I have to comment on the cover because, what fun! I don’t even know why I like it other than I just do LOL!
Wonderful review, I am so excited that this was a five star read for you!
Loving the cover and the fact that this sounds like a read with a bit of a difference. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much.
This is definitely not something I would normally pick up Melliane, but you have me convinced I need to give it a try. I’m already rooting for Melody and I want to see her finally get her voice so she can tell everyone she’s so much more than they were letting her be:)
Interesting Mellanie! A while back I saw an interview on TV with some people that has this condition. And although we probably think this would be a great ability to have, they talked about the emotional toll of not being able to forget anything.
Sounds terrific! Thank you for putting it on my radar. Not what I usually read or listen to, but it’s tempting me to get out of my box…Which I do once in a while 🙂
Sorry! I mistakenly thought this was Mellanie’s review. On either case, my thoughts are the same 🙂
This sounds like an emotional and impactful read, and obviously it worked on you. I haven’t seen this before, but reading the synopsis I am intrigued. I need to know more.
Oh Melliane I need to read this one! I hadn’t heard of it before but reading your review I know this one is going to make me cry and be thankful and just impact me in such a profound way.
Wow! This is one I would have passed on but am now totally curious about. I’m going to have to put this one on my wishlist.
Oh wow..the blurb got me and your review sold this one Melliane..it sounds wonderful!
This sounds very inspiring! This is the first time I’m seeing this cute cover and now you have me completely curious about this young girl.
Thanks for the lovely review 🙂
This book sounds lovely. I love spirited characters like Melody. Nothing seems to faze her.
Je ne suis pas couramment en francais. I swear there’s something wrong with that sentence [minus the spelling mistake in francais.]
So I’m going to say this all in English. Darn! I was hoping to impress you with my french skill. C’est dommage.
I haven’t read this book but I have read Copper Sun and that one is life changing. it’s about slavery and it’s set like a historical fiction. Love it! I have no doubt that I will love this one because of Sharon’s writing. It’s stunning.
Oh wow. This book really caught my attention. There’s just something about the cover that I really like and the concept looks amazing. Love your review Melliane!! <3
A page and a half? That’s pretty compelling. Such a cute cover.
Wow…this sounds amazing. I was unsure at first…but you have convinced me.
What exactly is the condition this child suffers?? I know it probably doesn’t matter, but I’m curious. I agree with others, the cover looks so fun and the book just sounds unique and interesting. Lovely review 🙂
Oh nice review. I love the cover. 🙂 And it does sound so good. Thank you for sharing! And really enjoyed the review layout. 🙂 Thank you!
