Night Owls by Jenn Bennett

Synopsis: Feeling alive is always worth the risk.

Meeting Jack on the Owl—San Francisco’s night bus—turns Beatrix’s world upside down. Jack is charming, wildly attractive…and possibly one of San Francisco’s most notorious graffiti artists.

But Jack is hiding a piece of himself. On midnight rides and city rooftops, Beatrix begins to see who this enigmatic boy really is.

Review: Jenn Bennett is an author that I particularly like and I loved her urban fantasy as well as her paranormal romance series. Also when the author has moved to a new genre to which she had not yet tried, I was very curious to find out what she was going to introduce us. New Adult is a very popular genre but I had seen very good reviews about this one and I was very curious about the story.

We find Jack and Beatrix two characters completely broken by life each in their own way. Jack does not necessarily had an easy life, his family is quite known and hides many secrets. But in addition to this, Jack is a graffiti artist wanted by the police; a boy who seems to be trying to break free in his art but who can not tell anyone. And then we have Beatrix… ah … poor girl with her divorced parents and with a father who had abandoned her and her brother since. But now Beatrix is trying to understand what she wants to do in her life. The design is truly her passion and she hopes to win a big competition to get into the school of her dreams. Yet their meeting one evening on the night bus will completely change their lives. They finally have someone to help them move forward, to confront their secrets and so to become a better person.

I enjoyed this story even if I have the impression that I didn’t love it as much as some others. But that does not change the fact that the story is very nice to read and that the author has perfectly managed her challenge in a genre such as this one. The artistic side put forward is very interesting and it is not something usually found in literature. We follow with pleasure our two characters, trying to understand what is behind all the events, their joy, their pain and their desires. It was a book full of emotions, really touching and I am curious to see what the author will present in her next novel.

  1. I’ve not tried any books by this author. I completely understand how it can be to read a new genre from a loved author and like, but not love these new books. I don’t think there is a problem with that. I’ve felt the same way about some new series that authors have come out with.

  2. Jenn Bennett is quickly becoming a favorite for me Melliane, I’ve loved everything of hers of read! I need to try her UF series in particular though, that one is calling my name. Glad you enjoyed this one overall even if you weren’t as blown away as some!
