Once She Was Tempted by Anne Barton

Honeycote, Book 2

Synopsis: A Portrait of a Lady

…or is it? The risqué painting owned by Benjamin Elliot, the earl of Foxburn, features a stunning beauty with sapphire eyes, golden hair, and creamy skin. Ben recognizes this particular English rose the instant he meets her—though she’s wearing considerably more clothing. In person, the demure debutante is even more irresistible…

In desperate need of money for her sick mother, Daphne Honeycote had posed for two scandalous portraits. Now she must hide her secret to save the Honeycote family name. Ben’s possession of one painting makes him an insufferable thorn in her side—and yet he may be her best chance at finding the canvas’s companion. As she becomes drawn to the dark-tempered earl, can Daphne risk laying bare the secrets of her heart?

Review: I really liked the first novel of the series which was very original and I had the sequel since, without getting into it yet. But wanting a little historical romance, I thought it was the right time to read it.

After following Belle’s story, this time we follow the one of her sister Daphne. Since Belle was married, Daphne’s life has changed, from poverty to social dances. She can now afford to look for a suitor, while enjoying her family and in-laws. Yet there is a shadow on the board, something that could destroy everything in an instant. To earn money to pay for her mother’s medicines, the young woman had agreed to pose on two paints in light clothing. But now that she has a reputation to defend, the paintings are resurfacing, and she is determined to find them both and destroy them. It was in this context that she met Count Foxburn.

I had a good time once again with this story. Daphne has a big heart and it was nice to discover her and see that she will do anything to help her close ones. Count Foxburn is a rather gruff and difficult character, but he hides many physical and psychological wounds in him.

The next novel is about Olivia and I’m curious to discover her story too, as well as Rose’s! Yes, because we find all the characters we know here as well as new ones for our greatest pleasure.

  1. It sounds to me like I could enjoy this one and also the first novel, and you got me curious about the next instalment as well! You know I love historical romance, so I’m gonna add this to my list 😀
