City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Cassidy Blake, Book 1

Synopsis: Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspecters, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.

When The Inspecters head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

Review: I really liked the novels I read by Victoria Schwab, so when I saw the French translation of this one, I was really curious to dive into the story. And then… how can we resist a ghost story? I love that, and I couldn’t wait to see what the author had to offer.

Cass isn’t just any girl, and besides, her best friend is a ghost that she’s bonded to in some strange way since he saved her. But then again, it’s not so easy to see ghosts and our heroine is looking forward to a break and a holiday away from it all. However, everything will be turned upside down when her parents are paid to do a TV show about ghosts from all over the world. Our heroine finds herself dealing with some very dangerous ghosts, but maybe she will also understand a little more about who she is and what she can do.

It was a really quick novel to read and I couldn’t wait to read the whole story. Cass is going to have to face some tough choices and most importantly, some impossible situations and it was very interesting to find out all that out. Our heroine is very pleasant to discover and I liked to see her relationship with Jacob who is always there to help her. And I also loved being able to go to Edinburgh and to discover a bit more of this city. The whole thing was really nice.

To conclude, it was a very good first volume and I’m curious to read the sequel!
