Betrayals by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 4

Synopsis: Olivia Jones knows a lot about betrayal – most of her life has been a lie. On the eve of her wedding, she discovered she was adopted – and that her biological parents were convicted serial killers.

Liv has found sanctuary in her new home of Cainsville, but she’s learned not to trust the town’s mysterious elders. So when her biker boyfriend Ricky Gallagher is linked to a series of murders, she’s reluctant to ask for their help. Meanwhile things have grown increasingly complicated with Gabriel Walsh, her boss and sometime friend. The fact that their fraught relationship is connected to an ancient myth in which they were passionate lovers doesn’t help matters, either…

As Liv fights to clear Ricky’s name, she discovers that her own life is at serious risk. Soon Ricky, Liv and Gabriel are tangled in a web of a betrayals. In order to survive, they will have to trust one another. But given their dark history, is that even possible? Or wise…?

Review: I love this series and although I thought at first that we had a trilogy, I was curious to get into this fourth volume! How not to be with all these intertwine fates and the persons trying to influence the decisions of our three main characters.

We thus find Olivia, Ricky and Gabriel for a new story that will put a strain on their feelings. Indeed, it seems that girls are murdered and that Ricky is related to all that happens and nobody understands why. You can imagine that when it comes to one of the men, Olivia is desperate to try to understand what is going on to clear their name. But now, this story will stage many different faes and Olivia will make choices that will impact her for the future.

I’m not giving too much away about the story not to spoil things but we are easily carried away by the chapters. The revelations follow one another about the past of the characters and it is true that I was fascinated by all the events. We are foretold a great betrayal in the story and I admit that I was really curious to see what would really happen! It also feels that the past of our heroes past catches them up and they can not handle what happens. It’s quite impressive to see that they are all affected by what happens and nobody knows how to really act. Besides, I did not expect at all for such a purpose and I admit that I am very surprised. I wonder what will be the consequences elsewhere.

It was once again a very good book and I’m curious to find out more. As I said, we have many revelations and I was fascinated by what the author has presented us. I urge you to start the series if it is not the case already, you will find something unique and different, which it must be said, is still very nice!

Cainsville, Tome 4

Deceptions by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 3

Synopsis: TRUST NO ONE

Olivia Jones is desperate for the truth. The daughter of convicted serial killers, she has begun to suspect that her parents are innocent of their crimes. But who can she trust, in a world where betrayal and deception hide in every shadow?

Liv does have one secret weapon: a mysterious sixth sense that helps her to anticipate danger. The trouble is, this rare power comes with its own risks. There are dark forces that want to exploit Liv’s talents – and will stop at nothing to win her to their side.

Now Liv must decide, before it’s too late. Who does she love? Who is really on her side? And can she save herself without burning down everything that matters most?

Review: I loved the first and second books in the series so as soon as this new novel was announced, I threw myself on it to pre-order it. Admittedly, Kelley Armstrong has managed to create something really interesting and intriguing and I was excited to finally understand the truth about the world that the author had presented so far.

As I said we finally have our answers in this novel and I admit that I was caught by the story and the characters from the beginning of the first chapter. I had so many questions and I was really excited to find out what was going to happen now. Olivia must again confront many events … Oh yes, between James and his obsessions about her which only grow stronger and become more and more unhealthy, or the issues about the Todd and Pamela’s guilt over the murders perpetrated, but also the forces that operate in the shadows and trying to influence the choices of our heroine. But that’s not all because of Liv’s feelings are very difficult to identify for the two men in her life. Do not worry, there is no love triangles, Olivia is sure of her choice but that does not change the tensions.

I admit that I was really curious to understand the purpose of the story related to Olivia, to really understand the legend that catches up and interferes in her life and whether she could free herself from all that or not. Moreover, it is a little difficult to know everything but then the author gives us a huge response to our delight. I was very surprised by the death of a major character in the story and I confess that I was not expecting it. But that’s not all because as I said, many surprises await us here, particularly about Pamela and Todd and I confess that I did not think the story would take this direction.

In all cases, Liv evolves a lot over the chapters and the books and it’s always a pleasure to discover more about her although she endures many visions that are becoming more and more difficult to manage. Gabriel is faithful to himself, to his stoicism and his desire to understand nothing, not wanting to see the truth even when it is in front of him and his attempts to keep a clear mind. And then we have Ricky. Oh the dear biker who can only steal our heart, this bad boy who makes us love him as our heroine. This is the kind of biker that I would like to read more, the kind of boy we love to discover. Both are present here to help Olivia and they will do everything to protect her. These are two people in gold.

As you can see, I had a great time with the story once again. I do not know if this is really the end, but it was a very good third volume. I highly recommend the series!

Deceptions de Kelley Armstrong (VO)

Cainsville, Tome 3

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : NE FAIS CONFIANCE A PERSONNE

Visions by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 2

Synopsis: Omens, the first installment in Kelley Armstrong’s exciting new series, introduced Olivia Taylor-Jones, daughter of notorious serial killers, and Gabriel Walsh, the self-serving, morally ambiguous lawyer who became her unlikely ally. Together, they chased down a devious killer and partially cleared her parents of their horrifying crimes.

Their success, however, is short-lived. While Olivia takes refuge in the old, secluded town of Cainsville, Gabriel’s past mistakes have come to light, creating a rift between the pair just when she needs his help the most.

Olivia finds a dead woman in her car, dressed to look like her, but the body vanishes before anyone else sees it. Olivia’s convinced it’s another omen, a sign of impending danger. But then she learns that a troubled young woman went missing just days ago—the same woman Olivia found dead in her car. Someone has gone to great lengths to kill and leave this young woman as a warning. But why? And what role has her new home played in this disturbing murder?

Olivia’s effort to uncover the truth places her in the crosshairs of old and powerful forces, forces that have their own agenda, and closely guarded secrets they don’t want revealed.

Review: I was very surprised by the first novel and I had a wonderful time with it and with the release of the third book, I was eager to read on to discover the continuity of Olivia’s adventures.

After proving the innocence of her parents for two of the murders, our heroine begins to work while trying to handle any problems that occur during her life and for that, there are many of them. Firstly, we find James and his rather unhealthy desire to recover Olivia, putting her in rather disturbing situations. There is also the disappearance of a young woman in the city and our heroine seems to see her corpse in some places she is before the disappearance of the body each time. Is this a vision? Is this real? This is a question that will become increasingly important and Gabriel and Olivia will have to team up to solve this strange mystery. But this murder will upset the life of our waitress who will finally discover some secrets of Cainsville, many of which I did not expect. We learn the truth about the people, the elders, and some details about Olivia’s life. The set was really fascinating and I was completely carried away by the story and the characters.

In addition to the fascinating plot and evolutions of the story to which we do not expect, we also see some new interest in the love life of our heroine regarding the men around her. Thus we have the chance to see Ricky, a man I appreciate more and more and who seems to be a man that we can only love. He has everything of the bad boy who assumes his rebellious side and yet a rather sensitive aspect that makes us easily fall under his spell. And then we also have Gabriel … Ah Gabriel … It’s a character that we also love, but he is also very complex and it’s difficult to statute about him. Yes, he sometimes fails to understand that the consequences of his actions can have adverse effects and that his distance from others makes his life very difficult.

In any case, it was a fascinating novel, and I took a great pleasure to read and follow all the adventures of our heroes. It was once again a fantastic book and I’m really excited to be able to immerse myself in the rest of the story and to discover more.

Visions de Kelley Armstrong (VO)

Cainsville, Tome 2

Omens by Kelley Armstrong

Cainsville, Book 1

Synopsis: Twenty-four-year-old Olivia Taylor Jones has the perfect life. The only daughter of a wealthy, prominent Chicago family, she has an Ivy League education, pursues volunteerism and philanthropy, and is engaged to a handsome young tech firm CEO with political ambitions.

But Olivia’s world is shattered when she learns that she’s adopted. Her real parents? Todd and Pamela Larsen, notorious serial killers serving a life sentence. When the news brings a maelstrom of unwanted publicity to her adopted family and fiancé, Olivia decides to find out the truth about the Larsens.

Olivia ends up in the small town of Cainsville, Illinois, an old and cloistered community that takes a particular interest in both Olivia and her efforts to uncover her birth parents’ past.

Aided by her mother’s former lawyer, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia focuses on the Larsens’ last crime, the one her birth mother swears will prove their innocence. But as she and Gabriel start investigating the case, Olivia finds herself drawing on abilities that have remained hidden since her childhood, gifts that make her both a valuable addition to Cainsville and deeply vulnerable to unknown enemies. Because there are darker secrets behind her new home and powers lurking in the shadows that have their own plans for her.

Review: Kelley Armstrong embarks us on a whole new genre after the end of her urban fantasy series and I admit that I was intrigued. It’s true that the great reviews appearing everywhere also made me want to try it. I need to finally thank Carien for giving me this first volume (she is a wonderful friend). Oh yes, because I had a great time with the story, much more than what I would have thought, and I was completely caught up in the early chapters, eager to finish it off to see all the events.

Olivia Taylor-Jones is a heir of a wealthy family and her life is already mapped out! She is engaged to a man of her rank who is preparing to become a senator and the wedding is scheduled for the month after. Alas, an event will shake up her life and put everything in question. One evening when she returns home, she learns that she was actually adopted when she was still a child. This is something that is shocking in itself because everyone saw in her the likeness of her adoptive parents, but in addition to this, she also discovers that her biological parents are a couple of famous murderers who killed for no reason 4 couples. You will understand that it’s many things to learn at once. It could have been ok with the support of her mother who was not aware of the situation, or even with her boyfriend unfortunately, this is not the case … The first reaction of her fiance is to postpone the wedding, something that Olivia accepts difficultly, and she so returns her engagement ring. As for her mother, the woman decides to “abandon” her daughter to go on a trip to Europe, so things can be a bit forgotten. It’s a really difficult moment for a person who understands that her life is a lie and that people she loved and thought would always been there for her, run away. While denying the charity of her family, Olivia leaves as well, trying to hide from everyone and so ends up Cainsville. This is also where she will meet with Gabriel, a lawyer determined to get hired by our heroine.

As I said I loved the novel! The universe is completely fascinating! First, we have Cainsville, this mysterious city that holds many secrets. It starts with all the gargoyles that are found everywhere on the buildings or even those that appear only at night. But we also have those strange birds, the elders who are very interested in our heroine, or even a cat looking more than what it seems. Yes, we are left with many questions throughout the chapters and although very few answers we are given, I am very curious to read more in order to discover the truth.

And then we have Olivia … or Eden. How not having an identity crisis when so many things fall on her at the same time? Realizing that a part of her life was hidden from her is very difficult but now everyone calls her with a different name, expecting to see two opposing people. But in addition to this, Olivia realizes that memories rise to the surface, without really knowing if she sees what really happened. This is something very confusing! Our heroine is able to read the omens in everything she sees, she even sometimes have visions and interpretations that nobody sees. It was fascinating to find out all that. I knew about  some but it’s true that I have found some new ones here. Sometimes it’s funny to discover some of which we would never have thought of. It reminds me a bit of the things to myself I’m careful about, because I was raised like that, such as not to put bread upside down, not to open an umbrella inside of a building, not to break a mirror … Those are not here, but we still discover many others and I‘m curious to know more, to know what this gift also means for Olivia and so to see what she will become.

Then there are the Eden / Olivia’s parents… the real parents. We do not meet her father (although I am curious to see what will happen exactly when she will), but we have the chance to discover her mother several times here. Is she innocent? I think this is something that we would all like to know, but what I found particularly interesting is the fact that our heroine and the author does not idealize everything. Of course, we would like all to be rosy, that life would be perfect and that her parents were finally wrongly accused. But there is always an element of doubt as the answers are not found. Therefore Olivia and Gabriel will team up, seeking to understand what is really going on, at least for one of the murders and they will end up in a much larger and complicated story than we could have expected.

So yes, as you can see, we have a lot to discover in this novel and Kelley Armstrong has issued an original story full of ideas and difficult to put down. I can only advise you to try and I hope you will be as delighted as I was with this first volume. I now look forward to reading the following novel which I’m sure will be just as great!
