A Ghostly Mortality by Tonya Kappes

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Book 6

Synopsis: That ghost sure looks . . . familiar

Only a handful of people know that Emma Lee Raines, proprietor of a small-town Kentucky funeral home, is a “Betweener.” She helps ghosts stuck between here and the ever-after—murdered ghosts. Once Emma Lee gets them justice they can cross over to the great beyond.

But Emma Lee’s own sister refuses to believe in her special ability. In fact, the Raines sisters have barely gotten along since Charlotte Rae left the family business for the competition. After a doozy of an argument, Emma Lee is relieved to see Charlotte Rae back home to make nice. Until she realizes her usually snorting, sarcastic, family-ditching sister is a . . . ghost.

Charlotte Rae has no earthly idea who murdered her or why. With her heart in tatters, Emma Lee relies more than ever on her sexy beau, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross…because this time, catching a killer means the Raines sisters will have to make peace with each other first.

Review: I was really sad while finishing the previous volume and realizing that Charlotte Rae was killed. I know that she was a little annoying over Emma, but I liked their little fights and I’m sad to see that we won’t see them together again.

I had the chance to read the 5th and 6th book the one after the other but it’s true that I was a bit disturbed by the first chapter. Indeed, it is identical to the last of Volume 5 and I wondered for a moment if it was an error from the publisher. But no, the novel takes us back in history and we do make a small leap back in time. So we are back during the funeral wake of Jade Lee and we are launching in a new investigation to find the killer of Charlotte Rae.

I admit that I was fascinated by the story, trying to understand what had happened to the sister of our heroine. That’s sad to see how her family is devastated and to understand that solving this murder also means the complete disappearance of Charlotte. We had seen her a lot in the last novels but it is true that it was interesting to have a volume centered on her, getting to know her a little more and to see that despite the discord she and Emma love each other. It was also funny to see how Emma goes beyond the promises she made to Jack Henry and the hilarious situations in which she finds herself every time.

Yes you can see that I had a great time with this novel, even more than the previous one. This series is always nice, humorous, presenting a mystery that we always take pleasure to follow.

A Ghostly Mortality de Tonya Kappes (VO)

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Tome 6

Résumé (traduction personnelle) : Ce fantôme semble vraiment. . . familier

A Ghostly Reunion by Tonya Kappes

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Book 5

Synopsis: Emma Lee Raines sees dead people

Proprietor of the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home, Emma Lee can see, hear, and talk to ghosts of murdered folks. And when her high school nemesis is found dead, Jade Lee Peel is the same old mean girl—trying to come between Emma Lee and her hot boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, all over again.

There’s only one way for Emma Lee to be free of the trash-talking ghost—solve the murder so the former prom queen can cross over.

But the last thing Jade Lee wants is to leave the town where she had her glory days. And the more Emma Lee investigates on her own, the more complicated Miss Popularity turns out to be. Now Emma Lee will have to work extra closely with her hunky lawman to get to the twisty truth.

Review: I always spend a great time with the Southern Ghostly Mysteries series by Tonya Kappes and I look forward to each new volume to discover the further adventures of our dear Emma Lee Raines. And I must say that her nerves are strained here!!!

Our heroine is preparing a high school reunion with all the people who were with her when she was younger, this means both good and bad ones, starting with Jade Lee Peel. This woman has always messed around by calling her unpleasant names and making fun of her continually. But now Emma has changed and is determined to stand up to her this time, especially since she does not seem to have changed and wants to get her old boyfriend back, Jack Henry who is now Emma’s. But her diva role was quickly cut short when she was found strangled and Emma is then obliged to assist the young woman all day long. Finding her murderer becomes her mission number 1 to finally get rid of the girl!

As I said, it is as always a good time to follow Emma in her investigations. It must be said that her trauma business starts to grow, and she must be very careful with others so that they do not believe her crazy when she speaks in the wind. Something very difficult when Jade, the girl she hated, now harasses her without helping either. It was interesting to understand what had happened to Jade and it’s true that the mystery is pretty well done, I didn’t suspect a thing. However, it is quite sad to see the evolution of the relationship between Emma and her sister deteriorating gradually without understanding exactly the reason (well not completely).

I was quite surprised by the end of the novel which I absolutely did not expect and I must admit I am a little sad while waiting to read the 6th volume.

A Ghostly Reunion de Tonya Kappes (VO)

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Tome 5

A Ghostly Murder by Tonya Kappes

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Book 4

Synopsis: Emma Lee Raines knows there’s only one cure for a bad case of murder!

I told you I was sick, reads the heastone abouve Mamie Sue Preston’s grave. She was the richest woman in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, and also the biggest hypochondriac. Ironic, considering someone killed her-proprietor of the Eternal Slumber Funeral HOme, know all this? Because Mamie Sue’s ghost told her, that’s how! And she’s offering big bucks to find the perp.

The catch is, Mamie Sue was buried by the Raines family’s archrival, Burns Funeral Home. Would the Burneses stoop to framing Emma Lee’s granny? With an enterprising maid, a penny-pinching pastor, and a slimy Lexington lawyer all making a killing off Mamie Sue’s estate, Emma Lee needs a teammate-like her dreamboat boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross. Because ith millions at stake, snooping around is definitely bad for Emma Lee’s health.

Review: I had a great time with the first three volumes of the series. Indeed, I must say that each novels is full of lightness, humor and of course a great mystery. It is with pleasure that we find again Emma Lee here for a new investigation.

As I said a new case was set in motion in this story and it is the turn to Sue and Junior to go to ask our heroine for help. Each is determined to push Emma Lee to understand what has happened to them. Are the murders connected? Is there a serial killer in town? I admit that I was very quickly swept away by this investigation and I was very curious to understand the purpose and the truth behind the murders. One thing is for sure, I did not expect at all such a revelation at the end of the novel. There are a lot of tracks that we follow with curiosity and even if we agree fast enough with Emma Lee, we doubt that everything will be much more complicated than that. I must say that Mamie Sue was a very special character and she is hiding many secrets. But being very rich, this investigation will attract many dangers, much more than expected.

But even if there were only that but our heroine must also manage a large number of problems, including the fact that her sister Charlotte has decided to leave the family business or even to learn that Jack Henry has possibly found a job far from their city. It was touching to see the more sensitive side of our heroine, this is a touching side to observe as she does not necessarily reveals it often.

Something else ? It seems that someone is trying to plot against the Emma Lee’s grandmother, placing in her home some pretty different things stolen. But what may be the cause?

In all cases you understand that I had a good time with this story. It is as always a good read and it’s always interesting to see our heroine evolve with her gift and realize that she needs others though sometimes they are not always there for her. A new good novel.

A Ghostly Murder de Tonya Kappes (VO)

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Tome 4

A Ghostly Demise by Tonya Kappes

Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Book 3

Synopsis: The prodigal father returns—but this ghost is no holy spirit

When she runs into her friend’s deadbeat dad at the local deli, undertaker Emma Lee Raines can’t wait to tell Mary Anna Hardy that he’s back in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, after five long years. Cephus Hardy may have been the town drunk, but he didn’t disappear on an epic bender like everyone thought: He was murdered. And he’s heard that Emma Lee’s been helping lost souls move on to that great big party in the sky.

Why do ghosts always bother Emma Lee at the worst times? Her granny’s mayoral campaign is in high gear, a carnival is taking over the town square, and her hunky boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, is stuck wrestling runaway goats. Besides, Cephus has no clue whodunit…unless it was one of Mrs. Hardy’s not-so-secret admirers. All roads lead Emma Lee to that carnival—and a killer who isn’t clowning around.

Review: I had a great time with the first and second book and I was curious to see how the sequel was going to be. I must say that the stories are humorous, full of ghosts and with an intrigue we are curious to resolve.

This time, we find our heroine facing a new murder … Yet the newcomer, Cephus, does not seem to know where his body is, nor the person guilty of this act and it is up to Emma Lee to understand what happened if she wants to get back to her quiet life. The man has disappeared for years and few seem really sad of that fact, except his daughter and his wife who still hope to see him back in town. But while our heroine embarks on this investigation, it appears that it awakens a lot of memories that would have prefered to stay buried and someone seems determined to stop Emma Lee to find her answers, whatever the cost.

You can imagine that this is already a lot for the young woman to deal with, but in addition to that, she has to manage a carnaval, bringing back former residents she had not seen for a long time but also her Granny’s campaign to become mayor. Oh yes, because it must be said that her grandmother is determined to win and to recover all the voices.

As you can see, we find once again a lot of things in this novel and I was quite surprised by the culprit of the story as I did not really expect that. It was a treat to follow everything and to understand the truth with our heroine. Moreover, it is always nice to follow Emma Lee and see how she will act and evolves with this new gift which she really did not want.

A new story with a light and humorous moment.
