Antimony Price is on the run. With the Covenant on her tail and her family still in danger, she needs to get far, far away from anyone who might recognize her—including her own mice. For the first time in a long time, a Price is flying without a safety net. Where do you go when you need to disappear into a crowd without worrying about attracting attention? An amusement park, of course.

Some people would call Lowryland the amusement park. It’s one of the largest in Florida, the keystone of the Lowry entertainment empire…but for Annie, it’s a place to hide. She’s just trying to keep her head down long enough to come up with a plan that will get her home without getting anyone killed. No small order when she’s rooming with gorgons and sylphs, trying to placate frustrated ghosts, and rushing to get to work on time.

Then the accidents begin. The discovery of a dead man brings Annie to the attention of the secret cabal of magic users running Lowryland from behind the scenes. They want the fire that sleeps in her fingers. They want her on their side. They want to help her—although their help, like everything else, comes with a price.

No plan. Minimal backup. No way out. Annie’s about to get a crash course in the reality behind the pretty facade. If she’s lucky, she’ll survive the experience.

Review: I really like this series and I was eager to discover another of the novels. Besides, I was very happy to see that we were once again following Antimony because I loved having her as the main character in the previous volume. And then after all the events, I wanted to know how this young woman was going to act!

Annie is on the run, she knows that finding her family would put them in danger. So to try to blend in, she decides to go to work in one of the largest amusement parks where she can evolve without being noticed. But now, it seems that the place is not as safe as she thought. When terrible and oddly accidents happen, Annie is always present and she begins to wonder what exactly is going on. In addition, it seems that a cabal who manages the park is aware of her gifts. They offer to help her, to teach her how to use her talent without danger. Annie can only accept that but at what price?

It was a new very nice volume even if I admit that I really preferred the precedent one. Antimony tries at best to act even if it’s not easy for her. We will discover some of her friends and I admit that I was really delighted to meet Sam over the course of the story. It is a character that I appreciate very much. I wonder how our heroine will manage the next events because she goes again to new adventures! Once again, Seanan McGuire offers us a great story!

Antimony Price est en fuite. Avec le Couvent à sa suite et sa famille toujours en danger, elle doit aller loin, loin de toute personne qui pourrait la reconnaître, y compris ses propres souris. Pour la première fois depuis longtemps, un Price vole sans filet de sécurité. Où allez-vous quand vous avez besoin de disparaître dans une foule sans vous soucier d’attirer l’attention ? Un parc d’attractions, bien sûr.

Certaines personnes appelleraient Lowryland le parc d’attractions. C’est l’un des plus grands de Floride, la clef de voûte de l’empire du divertissement de Lowry … mais pour Annie, c’est un endroit où se cacher. Elle essaie juste de garder la tête baissée assez longtemps pour arriver à un plan qui la ramènera à la maison sans que personne ne soit tué. Elle loge avec des gorgones et des sylphes, essayant d’apaiser des fantômes frustrés, et se précipitant pour être au travail à temps.

Puis les accidents commencent. La découverte d’un homme mort porte Annie à l’attention de la cabale secrète des utilisateurs de magie qui gère Lowryland dans les coulisses. Ils veulent le feu qui dort dans ses doigts. Ils la veulent à leurs côtés. Ils veulent l’aider, même si leur aide, comme tout le reste, a un prix.

Pas de plan. Backup minimal. Sans issue. Annie est sur le point d’avoir un cours intensif sur la réalité derrière la jolie façade. Si elle a de la chance, elle survivra à l’expérience.

Avis : J’aime vraiment beaucoup cette série et j’étais impatiente de découvrir un autre de ses romans. D’ailleurs, j’étais très heureuse de voir que nous suivions encore une fois Antimony parce que j’avais adoré l’avoir en tant que personnage principal dans le tome précédent. Et puis après tous les évènements, j’avais envie de savoir comment cette jeune femme allait s’en sortir !

Annie est en fuite, elle sait que retrouver sa famille ne les mettrait qu’en danger. Alors pour essayer de se fondre dans la masse, elle décide d’aller travailler dans un des plus grands parcs d’attractions où elle pourra évoluer sans se faire remarquer. Mais voilà, il semblerait que le lieu ne soit pas aussi sans danger qu’elle ne le pensait. Quand de terribles accidents surviennent et que bizarrement, Annie est toujours sur place, elle commence à se poser des questions sur ce qu’il se passe exactement. De plus, il semblerait qu’une cabale au courant de ses dons gère le parc. Ils lui proposent de l’aider, de lui apprendre à s’en servir pour ne pas se mettre en danger. Annie ne peut qu’accepter mais à quel prix ?

C’était un nouveau tome très sympathique même si j’avoue que j’ai vraiment préféré le précédent. Antimony essaie au mieux d’agir même si ce n’est pas simple pour elle. Nous découvrirons certaines de ses amies et j’avoue que j’ai été vraiment enchantée de retrouver Sam au cours de l’histoire. C’est un personnage que j’apprécie beaucoup. Je me demande comment notre héroïne va gérer les prochains évènements car elle part encore une fois vers de nouvelles aventures ! Encore une fois, Seanan McGuire nous offre un super roman !

As the youngest of the three Price children, Antimony is used to people not expecting much from her. She’s been happy playing roller derby and hanging out with her cousins, leaving the globe-trotting to her older siblings while she stays at home and tries to decide what she wants to do with her life. She always knew that one day, things would have to change. She didn’t think they’d change so fast.

Annie’s expectations keep getting shattered. She didn’t expect Verity to declare war on the Covenant of St. George on live television. She didn’t expect the Covenant to take her sister’s threat seriously. And she definitely didn’t expect to be packed off to London to infiltrate the Covenant from the inside…but as the only Price in her generation without a strong resemblance to the rest of the family, she’s the perfect choice to play spy. They need to know what’s coming. Their lives may depend on it.

But Annie has some secrets of her own, like the fact that she’s started setting things on fire when she touches them, and has no idea how to control it. Now she’s headed halfway around the world, into the den of the enemy, where blowing her cover could get her killed. She’s pretty sure things can’t get much worse.

Antimony Price is about to learn just how wrong it’s possible for one cryptozoologist to be.

Review: If you know me, you know that I’m a big fan of Seanan McGuire and I always look forward to each of her new novels. I love her two series either October Daye or the InCryptid one. That’s why I was very curious to get into this sixth volume with Magic for Nothing. It must be said that the end of the preceding volume with the declaration of war by Verity for the Covenant of St. George, nothing could return as it was.

During the novels, we had the chance to follow Verity and her brother Alex and it’s true that it was very interesting to learn more about this family although I still have a small preference for Verity. But here we can discover another character by following the little last of the family: Antimony. She who has not yet decided what she wants to do with her life, will be put on the front of the stage. Indeed, the Price family has been waiting since the announcement of Verity and tries to know how the Covenant will act. The perfect solution would be to send someone to spy on their rank. But for that, they need a person who can not be recognized at the first opportunity and only Antimony corresponds to that profile. Novice in this matter, our heroine is going to be sent to Europe to infiltrate the Covenant while trying to hide her secret, the one she tries to control and which can ignite by a simple touch. Reaching their ranks, she is sent under cover in a traveling circus where she has to flush the creatures hiding there … Yet it seems much more complicated than expected, especially when Annie falls under the spell of the son of the manager.

I did not think that I could really appreciate a character as much as Verity but I confess that I now have a big weakness for Annie. She is a young woman full of freshness, ready to do anything to help her family and to save those she desires to help. It was very touching to see her relationship with Sam and to see her being herself in this circus. But it was also sad to see her torn between the Covenant and her desire to do well. It was really interesting how this organization was ruled, their desire to kill anyone who is different without trying to differentiate between good and evil. Moreover, I confess that I was really intrigued by one of the descendants of the Covenant, Leo, especially with this end and I am very curious to see what will happen thereafter. In any case, Seanan McGuire completely took me into her story that kept me curious throughout the chapters. A series that I can only recommend!

Etant la plus jeune des trois enfants Price, Antimony a l’habitude que les gens n’attendent pas beaucoup d’elle. Elle est heureuse de jouer au roller derby et de sortir avec ses cousins, laissant les voyages à son frère et sa sœur plus âgés alors qu’elle reste à la maison et essaie de décider ce qu’elle veut faire de sa vie. Elle a toujours su, qu’un jour, les choses devraient changer. Elle ne pensait pas que ce serait aussi rapidement.

Les attentes d’Annie continuent de se briser. Elle ne s’attendait pas à ce que Verity déclare la guerre au Couvent Saint-George à la télévision en direct. Elle ne s’attendait pas à ce que le Couvent prenne au sérieux la menace de sa sœur. Et elle ne s’attendait pas à être envoyée à Londres pour infiltrer le Couvent de l’intérieur … mais étant la seule Price de sa génération sans une forte ressemblance avec le reste de la famille, elle est le choix parfait pour jouer l’espionne. Ils doivent savoir ce qu’il va se passer. Leur vie peut en dépendre.

Mais Annie a quelques secrets, comme le fait qu’elle a commencé à mettre le feu à des objets en les touchant, et n’a aucune idée de la manière de le contrôler. Maintenant, elle est envoyée autour du monde, dans le repaire de l’ennemi, où perdre sa couverture pourrait la tuer. Elle est assez sûre que les choses ne peuvent pas être pires.

Antimony Price est sur le point d’apprendre à quel point elle a tort…

Avis : Si vous me connaissez, vous savez que je suis une grande fan de Seanan McGuire et j’attends toujours avec impatience chacun de ses nouveaux romans. J’aime beaucoup ses deux séries que ce soit October Daye ou InCryptid. C’est pourquoi j’étais très curieuse de me lancer dans ce sixième tome avec Magic for Nothing. Il faut dire que la fin du tome précédent avec la déclaration de guerre de Verity au Couvent Saint-George, rien ne pouvait redevenir comme avant.

Au cours des romans, nous avons eu la chance de suivre Verity ainsi que son frère Alex et c’est vrai que c’était très intéressant d’en apprendre plus sur cette famille même si j’ai toujours une petite préférence pour Verity. Mais voilà, nous pouvons cette fois-ci en apprendre encore plus en suivant la petite dernière de la famille : Antimony. Celle qui n’a pas encore décidé ce qu’elle voulait faire de sa vie, va être mise sur le devant de la scène. En effet, la famille Price est en attente depuis l’annonce de Verity et essaie de savoir ce que le Couvent va bien pouvoir faire face à cette découverte. La solution parfaite serait d’envoyer quelqu’un espionner leur rang. Mais pour cela, il faut une personne qui ne soit pas reconnue à la première occasion et seule Antimony correspond à ce profil.  Novice en la matière, notre héroïne va être envoyée en Europe pour infiltrer le Couvent tout en essayant de cacher son secret, celui qu’elle peine à contrôler et qui peut tout embraser par un simple touché. Parvenant à rentrer dans leur rang, elle est elle-même envoyée sous couverture dans un cirque ambulant où elle doit débusquer les créatures qui s’y cachent… Pourtant cela semble bien plus compliqué que prévu, notamment quand Annie tombe sous le charme du fils de la gérante.

Je ne pensais pas apprécier réellement un personnage autant que Verity mais j’avoue que j’ai maintenant un gros faible pour Annie. C’est une jeune femme pleine de fraicheur, prête à tout pour aider les siens et sauver ceux qu’elle désire aider. C’était très touchant de voir sa relation avec Sam et de la voir être elle-même au sein de ce cirque. Mais c’était aussi triste de la voir tiraillée entre le Couvent et son désir de bien faire. C’était vraiment intéressant de voir la façon de faire de cette société, leur désir de tuer quiconque est différent sans essayer de différencier le bon et le mal. D’ailleurs, j’avoue que j’ai été vraiment intriguée par un des descendant du Couvent, Leo, notamment avec cette fin et je suis très curieuse de voir ce qu’il va se passer par la suite. Comment toujours, Seanan McGuire m’a complètement emportée dans son histoire qui m’a tenue en haleine tout au long des chapitres. Une série que je conseille !

InCryptid, Book 5

Synopsis: Verity Price is back on the West Coast and getting back into the swing of the family business: cryptozoology. She’s rescuing cryptids from bad situations, protecting them from monster-hunters, and generally risking life and limb for the greater good, with her ex-Covenant partner/husband, Dominic, by her side. Her ballroom dance career is behind her—or so she thinks. When Verity gets the call from the producers of Dance or Die, the reality show she almost won several years before, she finds the lure impossible to resist, and she and Dominic are off to L.A. for one last shot at the big time.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When two contestants turn up dead, Verity will need every ally she can find with the investigation, without blowing her cover…

Review: The last two volumes were devoted to Verity’s brother and although I appreciate him very much, it’s true that I have a weakness for the young woman and I was impatient to find her again in this fifth volume. And what a pleasure to have her! I must said that we had heard so much about her dancing skills as she was in Dance and Die, so how not to be intrigued when we learn that the producers ask her to participate in a new season?

We thus find Verity married (yes married in Las Vegas) with our dear Dominic. But then, her life is turned upside down, although the young woman thought she had finally chosen her future, when she receives the email that changes the game. Indeed, the Dance and Die producers contact her to offer her to go back and to work for them and to do a season combining all the previous participants. It does not take much for the young woman to accept, that passion being very present. The only problem is that she is obliged to take back her identity of Valerie, a person with a different temperament and one who of course is not married. Dominic will therefore follow the young woman as her boyfriend but with the prohibition to follow her in places where all the dancers live, something that is not really simple for them. This is already a thing to manage with in addition the dance she has not practiced for a long time, but when the stress rises and the show evolves, and that the people eliminated are found dead … Verity will therefore have to find all the necessary allies, even those within the company to try to understand what is happening. And while the dead accumulate and her grandmother arrives to help Verity (yes we finally discover Alice and it was so much fun !!!), it appears that a cult is trying to bring a serpent God from another dimension. It is up to Verity and her family to understand what happens before others disappear.

It was a very good new volume and it is once again a real pleasure to see the talking mice that are always a tremendous asset to the story and who are always a lot of fun. How not to succumb? But of course, there are also other species and it was as always very interesting! In addition to this, we see the evolution of Verity, we see what she wants to do in her life and we are witnessing her decisions in relation to the dance and her work. It was fascinating to see what she wanted, to realize what was important dor her… The final also surprised me, I was not expecting it, the culprit, the reactions of Verity and all the other things! I am very impatient to read more and to see the consequences of this novel.

A very good discovery again! Seanan McGuire takes me away as always!

Sa carrière de danse de salon est derrière elle ou c’est ce qu’elle croyait. Lorsque Verity reçoit l’appel des producteurs de danse or Die, le reality show qu’elle a presque gagné plusieurs années auparavant, elle trouve l’appât impossible de résister, et elle et Dominic partent pour L.A. pour un dernier coup comme à la grande époque.

Bien sûr, rien n’est aussi simple que cela. Quand deux candidats sont retrouvés morts, Verity aura besoin de tous les alliés possibles qu’elle peut trouver pour enquêter, sans faire sauter sa couverture …

Avis : Les deux derniers tomes étaient consacrés au frère de Verity et même si je l’apprécie beaucoup, c’est vrai que j’ai un faible pour la jeune femme et j’étais donc impatiente de pouvoir repartir avec elle dans ce cinquième tome. Et quel plaisir de la retrouver ! Il faut dire qu’on a tant entendu parler de ses talents de danseuse, de son passage à Dance and Die, alors comment ne pas être intriguée quand on apprend que les producteurs la rappellent pour participer à une nouvelle émission ?

On retrouve donc Verity mariée (oui mariée à Las Vegas) avec notre cher Dominic. Mais voilà, la vie reprend de plus belle alors que la jeune femme a enfin choisi son avenir jusqu’à cet email qui change la donne. En effet, les producteurs de Dance and Die la contactent pour lui proposer de revenir travailler pour eux et faire une saison combinant toutes celles précédentes. Il n’en faut pas beaucoup plus à la jeune femme pour accepter, cette passion étant bien présente. Le seul hic c’est qu’elle est obligée de reprendre son identité de Valerie, une personne au tempérament différent et qui bien sûr n’est pas mariée. Dominic va donc suivre la jeune femme en tant que son petit ami mais avec l’interdiction de la suivre dans les lieux où tous les danseurs vivent, chose qui n’est pas vraiment simple. C’est déjà une chose à gérer en plus de la danse qu’elle n’a pas pratiquée depuis longtemps, mais alors que le stress monte et que l’émission évolue, les personnes éliminées sont retrouvées mortes… Verity va donc devoir trouver tous les alliés nécessaires, même ceux au sein de la troupe pour essayer de comprendre ce qu’il se passe. Et alors que les morts s’accumulent et que la grand-mère de Verity arrive pour l’aider (oui nous découvrons enfin Alice et quel plaisir !!!), il semblerait qu’un culte essaie de faire venir un Dieu serpent d’une autre dimension. C’est à Verity et ses proches de comprendre ce qu’il se passe avant que d’autres ne disparaissent.

C’était un nouveau très bon tome et c’est une fois encore un réel plaisir de retrouver les souris parlantes qui sont une fois de plus un atout extraordinaire à l’histoire et que l’on prend plaisir à suivre et à découvrir. Comment ne pas succomber ? Mais bien sûr, on retrouve aussi d’autres espèces et c’était comme toujours très intéressant ! En plus de cela, on voit l’évolution de Verity, on voit ce qu’elle désire faire de sa vie et on assiste à ses décisions par rapport à la danse et son travail. C’était fascinant de voir ce qu’elle désirait, de réaliser ce qui était important… La conclusion m’a aussi surprise, je ne m’y attendais pas, les coupables, les réactions de Verity et le reste ? Je suis très impatiente de pouvoir lire la suite et de voir les conséquences de ce tome.

Une très bonne découverte une fois de plus ! Seanan McGuire m’emporte comme à chaque fois !

InCryptid, Book 4

Alexander Price has survived gorgons, basilisks, and his own family—no small feat, considering that his family includes two telepaths, a reanimated corpse, and a colony of talking, pantheistic mice. Still, he’s starting to feel like he’s got the hang of things…at least until his girlfriend, Shelby Tanner, shows up asking pointed questions about werewolves and the state of his passport. From there, it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to Australia, a continent filled with new challenges, new dangers, and yes, rival cryptozoologists who don’t like their “visiting expert” very much.

Australia is a cryptozoologist’s dream, filled with unique species and unique challenges. Unfortunately, it’s also filled with Shelby’s family, who aren’t delighted by the length of her stay in America. And then there are the werewolves to consider: infected killing machines who would like nothing more than to claim the continent as their own. The continent which currently includes Alex.

Survival is hard enough when you’re on familiar ground. Alex Price is very far from home, but there’s one thing he knows for sure: he’s not going down without a fight.

Review: It’s always a pleasure to immerse myself in the Seanan McGuire novels, whatever the series. It’s been a moment that I had this fourth book but I had forgotten to get into the story. Indeed, by receiving the fifth book featuring Verity (finally !!!! I was so waiting for this one), I realized that I had jumped a novel. But as I love Verity, I did read this novel fast enough to finally find her again! Well I say that but I also had a great time there too, this is also a big advantage and one of the reasons I read them all quickly each time.

Alexander is a character that I like to follow even though of course I have a preference for the young woman and this time, our hero has to face many problems. Indeed, his girlfriend Shelby asks him for help and so to accompany her to Australia to deal with the werewolves who are increasing in number and causing many casualties. Being very afraid of these creatures is one thing, but to face Shelby’s family which is regarded as the “enemy” is quite worse! I admit that the meeting between the two is the most interesting and vibrant! It was fascinating to meet another family, to see their decisions, to understand how they ruled their small group and how they interacted with external beings. I understand the surprise and the envy that Alex has over everything. It’s hard for him to act especially as he is afraid of the opinion of the parents of the young woman and yet he does his best. Shelby also helps as she can. It was touching to see that sometimes she took his side despite the reproaches of her family, as well as the threats.

And then there are the werewolves … I admit that I was curious to see the person responsible for these acts, and I was quite surprised when I learned the truth because I was not expecting this character but it was well found. This virus is quite different from what would be expected, particularly in the details and I always find very interesting to see the ideas of the authors on this. It will not be a simple story and many characters are going to call into question their beliefs. We also discover other species and it was again a pleasure! I did not say about that but do not worry, you will also find the talking mouses that we love. It’s always so nice to see them interact although not everything is rosy for them.

As I said at the beginning of the story, I had once again a great time and I can now get into the next book and finally find Verity! It was a very good story and a pleasure to learn more about Shelby that we see so often in the novels. A good find!
