Of Monsters and Madness, Book 1

Synopsis: A romantic, historical retelling of classic Gothic horror featuring Edgar Allan Poe and his character Annabel Lee, from a New York Times best-selling author.

Summoned to her father’s home in 1820’s Philadelphia, a girl finds herself in the midst of a rash of gruesome murders in which he might be implicated. She is torn romantically between her father’s assistants-one kind and proper, one mysterious and brooding-who share a dark secret and may have more to do with the violent events than they’re letting on.

Review: Before its release, the idea of a horror novel with a gothic atmosphere attracted me right away. Yet soon after, many mixed reviews began to swarm everywhere cooling my ardor dpwn and it took me more time to get into the novel. Besides, I can tell you right away that I do not know much about Edgar Allan Poe and even less about his character Annabel Lee, which means that for once, I could not make any comparison, but give a personal opinion of the story itself.

As I said, I was not expecting too much given all the reviews I had read on some blogs, but it’s true that eventually I might have appreciated a bit more than some my reading. We discover a young girl, Annabel, who has always lived on the margins of society, until her mother dies and that her father calls her at home with him. But here, pretty strange things are going on in this house and it would seem that in the city, a serial killer is at large … It will be very difficult for the girl to adapt to this new life she has not really wanted, to see that her father is not interested in her and that she has to change to be accepted. But in addition to this, Annabel is also determined to understand the secrets that are hidden from her in this house and so what had happened.

We have an idea about the events, it is not a surprise, but it was interesting to see our heroine understand gradually what was going on, as well as the actions of her father and his assistants. It was pretty funny to see that the author had put some Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in her story because it is not necessarily what we would expect. By cons, even if we read the story fast enough, it is true that it perhaps lacked of a little something and I admit I was a little disappointed with the end that ultimately try somehow to add a cliffy to make you want to read the sequel. I’m not sure whether it is really necessary as we do not really understand what happened to get there.

In any case, I had a good time and if I get the chance I think I’ll read more later with pleasure.

Rappelée chez elle par son père en 1820 à Philadelphie, une jeune fille se retrouve au milieu d’une vague de meurtres horribles dans laquelle il pourrait être impliqué. Elle est déchirée romantiquement entre les assistants de son père – un gentil et bon, un mystérieux et sombre – qui partagent un lourd secret et pourraient plus avoir à voir avec les événements violents qu’ils ne le laissent paraître paraitre.

Avis : Avant sa sortie, l’idée d’un roman d’horreur, le tout avec une ambiance gothique m’a tout de suite attirée. Pourtant, peu après, les avis plus que mitigés qui ont commencé à pulluler partout ont refroidi mon ardeur et j’ai mis beaucoup plus de temps à me lancer dans la lecture. D’ailleurs je peux vous dire toute de suite que je ne connais pas grand-chose d’Edgar Allan Poe et encore moins de son personnage Annabel Lee, ce qui signifie que pour une reprise, je ne pourrais faire aucune  comparaison mais ne donner qu’un avis personnel de l’histoire en elle-même.

Comme je le disais, je ne m’attendais pas à grand-chose au vu de tous les avis que j’avais pu lire sur certains blogs, du coup c’est vrai que finalement j’ai peut-être plus apprécié que certains ma lecture. On découvre une jeune fille, Annabel, qui a toujours vécu en marge de la société, jusqu’au jour où sa mère meurt et qu’elle soit rappelée auprès de son père. Mais voilà, il se passe des choses assez étranges dans cette demeure et il semblerait que, dans la ville, un tueur en série soit en liberté… Il va être très difficile à la jeune fille de s’adapter à cette nouvelle vie qu’elle n’a pas vraiment voulue, de voir que son père ne s’intéresse que très peu à elle et qu’elle doit changer pour être accepter dans cette nouvelle société. Mais en plus de cela, Annabel est aussi déterminée à comprendre les secrets qui lui sont cachés dans cette maison et à découvrir ce qu’il se passe.

On se doute un peu des évènements, ce n’est pas une grande surprise, mais c’était intéressant de voir notre héroïne comprendre petit à petit ce qu’il se passait, de même que les agissements de son père et ses assistants. C’était assez drôle de voir que l’auteure avait mis un peu de Dr Jekill et Mr Hyde dans son histoire parce que ce n’est pas forcément ce à quoi on s’attendrait pour une telle histoire. Par contre, même si on lit l’histoire assez rapidement, c’est vrai qu’elle manquait peut-être d’un petit quelque chose et j’avoue que j’ai été un peu déçue par la fin qui finalement essaie tant bien que mal de rajouter un cliffy pour qu’on lise la suite. Je ne suis pas sure que ce soit vraiment nécessaire comme on ne comprend pas vraiment ce qu’il s’est passé pour en arriver là.

Dans tous les cas, j’ai passé un bon moment et si j’en ai l’occasion je pense que je lirai la suite avec plaisir.
