Review: As for each novel in the Kate Daniels series, I was waiting for Magic Shifts with impatient since the end of the previous volume. It must be said that every novel is always a delight to follow and to discover.

We thus find our hero, now separated from the Pack. This is a big change, and even if it is easier for Kate, Curran is struggling to return to a quieter life. Yet, with our heroine, nothing is ever really peaceful. While an army of ghouls is wandering appears in town and that nobody seems to know the reason of their presence, George comes home to ask for help. It seems that her companion, Eduardo, has disappeared and the pack does not really seem interested to save him. Our couple will then embark on a new investigation much more difficult than they thought. But as they come closer to the truth, they may realize that a new enemy is in town, and he seems much more powerful than they would have imagined.

I really liked the ideas of the authors here, including a new type of creature and I admit that I was quite surprised. It must be said that the authors keep us in the dark for a while before revealing the truth. But of course, we also have the presence of Roland and I admit that I’m really curious to understand what he really wants. And it’s true that even if we understand that he is interested in Kate and her family, it is difficult to really understand him. Moreover, this novel will help us to learn more about the mother of our heroine and the events following the escape of Voron. But that’s not all because, now separated from the Pack, Curran finds himself offered the reins of the Guild of Mercenaries and I admit that it was pretty funny to see how people were taking this decision. But I think what made me smile the most was to see Curran trying to adapt to a normal life that is perhaps not necessarily made for him and to see that although Jim is the new leader, all turn to our lion to solve their problems.

You can understand now that it is not necessarily an easy novel for Kate but we find here all the characters we know about with pleasure and as always, it is very difficult to put the book down until finishing it. Besides, if you have not already tried the series, I can only advise you to do it quickly. I’m sure you will love these colorful characters that will take you easily in their adventures and their lives.

Avis : Comme pour chaque roman de la série Kate Daniels, j’attendais Magic Shifts avec impatiente depuis la fin du tome précédent. Il faut dire que chaque roman est toujours un pur délice à suivre et découvrir.

Nous retrouvons donc nos héros, à présent séparés de la meute. C’est un gros changement, et même si c’est plus facile pour Kate, Curran a du mal à revenir à une vie plus calme. Pourtant, avec notre héroïne, rien n’est jamais vraiment paisible. Alors qu’une armée de ghoules semble errer en ville et que personne ne semble en connaitre la raison, George se présente chez eux pour leur demander de l’aide. Il semblerait que son compagnon, Eduardo, ait disparu et la meute ne semble pas vraiment intéressée pour le sauver. Notre couple va alors se lancer dans une enquête bien plus ardue qu’ils ne le pensaient. Mais alors qu’ils se rapprochent de la vérité, ils pourraient bien se rendre compte qu’un nouvel ennemi est en ville, et qu’il semble bien plus puissant qu’ils ne l’auraient imaginé.

J’ai beaucoup aimé les idées des auteurs ici, on retrouve un nouveau type de créatures et j’avoue que j’ai été assez surprise. Il faut dire que les auteurs nous gardent dans le flou pendant un bon moment avant de nous révéler la vérité. Mais bien sûr, nous avons aussi la présence de Roland et j’avoue que je suis vraiment curieuse de comprendre ce qu’il désire réellement. Et c’est vrai que même si on comprend qu’il s’intéresse à Kate et sa famille, c’est difficile de vraiment le cerner. D’ailleurs, ce roman nous permettra d’en apprendre plus sur la mère de notre héroïne et les événements suivant la fuite de Voron. Mais ce n’est pas tout car, maintenant séparé de la Meute, Curran se retrouve proposé les rênes de la Guilde des Mercenaires et j’avoue que c’était assez drôle de voir comment les gens prenaient cette décision. Mais je pense que ce qui m’a fait le plus sourire c’est de voir Curran essayer de s’adapter à une vie normale qui n’est peut-être pas forcément faite pour lui et de voir que même si Jim est le nouveau dirigeant, tous se tournent vers notre lion pour régler certains problèmes.

Vous le verrez, ce n’est pas un roman forcément facile pour Kate ici mais on retrouve tous les personnages que nous connaissons avec plaisir et comme à chaque fois, c’est très difficile de reposer le livre avant de l’avoir fini. D’ailleurs si vous n’avez pas déjà essayé la série, je ne peux que vous conseiller de le faire au plus vite. Je suis sûre que vous serez conquis par ces personnages hauts en couleurs qui vous emporteront facilement dans leurs aventures et dans leur vie.

Kate Daniels, Book 7

Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

Review: Ah Kate Daniels… I can definitely say that this series is one of my favorite and I wait for each new volume with great anticipation. So I was the happiest girl in the world when I had the chance to receive an ARC of the novel. I was also eager to get into the story, and once started, I struggled to stop before finishing it. Before starting it, I read an article on the author’s blog, explaining that the big plot versus Roland was over here, and that we should not be afraid because 3 volumes were still expected after this one, and I confess that it made me really curious about everything. Yes that’s right! Because we were waiting for this meeting since the first novel and I really wanted to know how everything would unfold and be ended. But of course, everything is a vicious circle because I am now really looking forward to see what the two authors reserve us for the next Kate’s adventures.

But let’s go back to the beginning … Curran is forced to go away from the pack to have a conversation with another leader and so to try to weaken Roland by removing his supplier. Kate is naturally responsible for all weres, although she hardly likes it. But while she attends the meeting of the Conclave, a murder is committed, and to the chagrin of our heroine, Hugh offers her an ultimate choice. To find the culprit, or to start a war between vampires and werewolves. Of course, a third choice is still open to her, but giving up to this man is not even possible. However, to understand and to discover the murderer, the young woman is forced to go to the territory of the People, who are determined to kill her if they see anyone there. While dealing with this problem, along with the absence of the Lord of the Beasts, Kate will soon have to find solutions, especially when her choices are being questioned by her own. In addition, Roland seems closer and closer, and his arrival announces major changes. And unfortunately, some not necessarily good.

As you can imagine, I took a great pleasure in following this new story which is always equal to the previous volumes. It’s also always nice to find all the characters we love. Kate is as always trying to comply in relation to what the majority wants, yet this is far from easy. And although she is deemed in all circumstances, it is very difficult for her to act differently from what she wants. Unfortunately this is how she makes many enemies. I waited for a very long the meeting with Roland and each novel prepared us a little more for what would happen. Does Roland wish to kill her? Does he want to know her? Does he want to fight her to be sure she can’t overcome him? Yes I had many question throughout the story and I admit that I was still very surprised by the final. Yet I’m curious to see what the next few novels will present us compared to the past events. I think the villain who remains equal to himself is as always Hugh. Yes because he always has some very strange ideas and is determined to keep Kate with him whatever happens. And of course we have Curran. I admit it was a bit sad for Kate and for us as he isn’t present until the end of the story, indeed, until now we always had seen them together and inseparable. But it’s still very interesting to see how the young woman is doing all alone in front of everyone, even if she is always accompanied by those who are constantly in there for her (i.e. Derek, Jim …).

Finally you’ll understand that I had a great time with this novel and I highly recommend the series to the urban fatansy readers. I’m sure the fans will be excited and eager to read more as always. A new little jewel.

Kate Daniels, Tome 7

Avis : Ah Kate Daniels… Je pense pouvoir dire que c’est une des séries que j’apprécie le plus et j’attends chaque nouveau tome avec une grande impatience. Aussi j’ai été des plus heureuses quand j’ai eu la chance de recevoir un ARC du roman. Je me suis d’ailleurs empressée de me lancer dans l’histoire, et une fois commencé, j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à m’arrêter avant d’avoir terminé. Avant de le commencer, j’ai lu un article sur le blog de l’auteur, expliquant que la grosse intrigue par rapport à Roland était terminée ici, et qu’il ne fallait pas avoir peur car 3 tomes étaient encore prévus, et j’avoue que j’étais vraiment curieuse de découvrir le tout. Oui ! Parce qu’on attend, ou en tout cas j’attends depuis le tout premier roman cette rencontre et j’avais très envie de savoir comment le tout allait se dérouler et qui resterait debout à la fin. Mais bien sûr, le tout est un cercle vicieux car je suis vraiment impatiente maintenant de voir ce que nos deux auteurs nous réservent pour la suite des aventures de Kate.

Reprenons l’histoire du début… Curran est obligé de partir loin de la meute pour avoir un entretien avec un autre dirigeant et ainsi essayer d’affaiblir Roland en lui enlevant un fournisseur. Kate est donc naturellement en charge de tous les changeformes, bien que cela ne lui plaise guère. Mais alors qu’elle assiste à la réunion du Conclave, un meurtre est perpétré, et au grand dam the notre héroïne Hugh lui propose un ultime choix. Trouver le coupable, ou commencer une guerre entre vampires et garous. Bien sûr, un troisième choix s’offre toujours à elle, mais se rendre à cet homme n’est même pas envisageable. Pourtant, pour comprendre et découvrir le meurtrier, la jeune femme est obligée de se rendre sur le territoire du Peuple, qui est déterminé à la tuer s’ils voient quiconque se rendre chez eux. Devant alors faire face à ce problème, mais aussi à l’absence du Seigneur des Bêtes, Kate va vite devoir trouver des solutions, surtout quand ses choix sont remis en question par les siens. En plus de cela, Roland semble de plus en plus proche, et son arrivée annonce de grands changements. Et malheureusement, pas forcément des bons.

Vous vous doutez, j’ai pris énormément de plaisir à suivre cette nouvelle histoire qui est toujours à la hauteur des tomes précédents. C’est aussi toujours très agréable de retrouver tous les personnages que l’on adore. Kate doit comme toujours essayer de se conformer par rapport à ce que désire la majorité, pourtant tout cela est loin d’être facile. Et bien qu’elle soit jugée en toutes circonstances, il est très difficile pour elle d’agir autrement que ce qu’elle désire. Hélas c’est aussi comme cela qu’elle se fait des ennemis. J’attendais depuis très longtemps la rencontre avec Roland et chaque roman nous préparait un peu plus à ce qui allait se passer. Roland désire-t-il la tuer ? Désire-t-il la connaître ? Désire-t-il se battre avec elle pour vérifier qu’elle ne peut pas le vaincre ? Oui je me suis posée la question tout au long de l’histoire et j’avoue que j’ai été quand même très surprise par le final. Pourtant je suis quand même curieuse de voir ce que les prochains romans donneront par rapport aux événements passés. Je pense par contre que le méchant qui reste égal à lui-même est comme toujours Hugh. Oui parce qu’il a des idées vraiment très étranges et semble investi de l’envie constante de garder Kate avec lui quoi qu’il se passe. Et bien sûr nous avons Curran. J’avoue que c’était un peu triste pour Kate et pour nous qu’il ne soit présent qu’en fin d’histoire, étant donné que jusqu’à maintenant nous les avions vus tous les deux toujours ensemble et inséparables. Mais c’est quand même très intéressant de voir comment la jeune femme se débrouille toute seule face à tous, même si elle est toujours accompagnée par ceux qui sont constamment pour là pour elle (i.e Derek, Jim…).

Enfin vous l’aurez compris j’ai passé un très bon moment avec ce roman et je conseille fortement la série aux fans d’urban fatansy. Je suis sûre que les fans seront ravis et désireux d’en lire plus comme toujours. Un nouveau coup de cœur.

Review: Wow this book is awesome, but it’s always the case for any Ilona Andrews book. It’s pretty terrible because once started we do not want to read everything at once because we know very well that the end will come too quickly. And this is the case here of course, whatever we want, it is impossible to put it down before finishing it. Some series fizzle with each new volume and others become more amazing. The Kate Daniels series is part of the last one. One of the best series I have had the opportunity to read and I recommend you, no, I order you to read it if you haven’t yet. I do not even understand how it is possible that the sales were not good in France to the point that they stop publishing it. It is really a sad news for all readers who can not read English.

We were waiting for this new volume for a long time, and it was completely up to my expectations. So many things are happening here, good ones as bad ones but what is certain is that there are also many surprises. Curran and Kate are invited to keep a young pregnant woman far from Atlanta where everyone dreams to kill her, starting with her own father. In fact, she bears two babies from two different fathers and the first one out will have the chance to recover the territory of her father. Saying “no” was tempting if the key wasn’t a cure known to prevent shapeshifters to become crazy. Kate and Curran don’t need more to accept the request even though they know it’s a trap. But they will not only travel alone and for our greatest pleasure, we also see Derek, Raphael, Aunt B., but also Andrea, our dear doctor and a few others. It was very pleasant to find them all in this volume.

Our small group is in a story that is totally beyond them and where everyone has a hidden idea. Taking care of a young pregnant woman is hard enough but when everyone tries to kill her and that the master of the house is none other than Hugh, Kate’s enemy, the problems are only beginning. And when some bodies are found mutilated and that some strange creatures are responsible, they must quickly understand what is happening.

This is a volume rich in adventures for Kate. I did not expect that at all. Her meeting with Hugh was a total surprise and I admit that I was curious to see what he was trying to do now that she was away from her people. And I confess that I was really surprised. This is a very intriguing and twisted character and yet he knows Kate and I look forward to a future meeting. But there is more and Kate will face many doubts about her private life and some things will not be pleasant to discover. Yet she will also allow us to learn more about her past and Roland’s and perhaps even change the situation for the rest of the story. We meet many new characters here, some much secret than they appear to be and I’m very intrigued to learn more about them. I also had many questions about Curran and his actions and even if we are convinced that there is a reason about his behavior, we aren’t sure. But as always it is a pleasure to follow our little couple and see them on a mission such as this one.

The end of the novel was impressive and I loved seeing what could happen. I admit that I was very surprised by the outcome of a character and I can not seem to realize that we won’t meet him/her again … But it’s up to you to discover what is really happening. It was a splendid volume and I admit that it’s always a treat to follow Kate. Once again I look forward to the release of the next novel to see what will happen.

A series that I recommend and re recommend! I’m sure you’ll love it!

Avis : Wow ce livre est énorme, mais ce ne pouvait être que ça pour un nouveau livre d’Ilona Andrews. C’est assez terrible parce qu’une fois commencé on ne veut pas avancer dans la lecture car on sait très bien que la fin va arriver trop vite. Et c’est le cas car bien sûr, quoi que l’on veuille, il est impossible de poser le livre avant de l’avoir fini. Il y a des séries qui s’essoufflent avec les tomes et d’autres qui gardent un niveau hallucinant et Kate Daniels est de ces dernières. Une des meilleures séries que j’ai eu l’occasion de lire et je ne la conseille même plus, je vous ordonne de la lire si vous n’avez jamais tenté. Je ne comprends même pas comment c’est possible que les ventes n’aient pas été bonnes en France au point qu’ils arrêtent l’édition. C’est vraiment une triste nouvelle pour tous les lecteurs qui ne peuvent pas lire en Anglais.

Cela faisait un moment que nous attendions tous ce nouveau tome, et il est totalement à la hauteur de mes attentes. Tant de choses se passent ici, des bonnes comme des mauvaises mais ce qui est sûr c’est qu’il y aussi un grand nombre de surprises. Kate et Curran se retrouvent invités à garder une jeune femme enceinte loin d’Atlanta où tous ne rêvent que de la tuer, à commencer par son propre père. En effet, elle a en elle deux enfants de deux pères différents et le premier à sortir aura la chance de récupérer le territoire de son père. Leur dire non était tentant s’il n’existait pas à la clé un remède connu seulement des européens pour empêcher les métamorphes de devenir loup. Il n’en faut pas plus à Kate et Curran pour accepter même s’ils savent que c’est un piège. Mais ils ne seront pas les seuls du voyage et pour notre plus grand plaisir on retrouve aussi Derek, Raphael, Tant B., Andrea, notre cher médecin et quelques autres. C’était très agréables de les retrouver tous dans ce tome.

Tout notre petit groupe se retrouve dans une histoire qui les dépasse totalement et où chacun a un objectif caché. S’occuper d’une jeune femme enceinte est déjà assez difficile mais quand tout le monde essaie des les tuer avec elle et que le maître des lieux n’est autre que Hugh, l’ennemi de Kate, tout ne peut que se compliquer. Et quand des corps sont retrouvés mutilés et que des créatures étranges en sont responsables, ils doivent très vite comprendre ce qu’il se passe.

C’est un tome riche en aventures pour Kate. Je ne m’y attendais pas du tout. Sa rencontre avec Hugh a été une totale surprise et j’avoue que j’étais plus que curieuse de voir ce qu’il allait tenter de faire maintenant qu’elle était éloignée des siens. Et j’avoue que je m’attendais vraiment à tout sauf à ça. C’est un personnage très intrigant et tordu et pourtant il connait Kate et j’attends avec impatience une prochaine rencontre. Mais il n’y a pas que lui et Kate va devoir faire face à de nombreux doutes quant à sa vie privée et certaines choses ne seront pas des plus agréables à découvrir. Pourtant cela nous permettra aussi d’en apprendre plus sur son passé et sur Roland et voire même peut-être changer la donne quant à la suite de l’histoire. On rencontre de nombreux personnages, certains bien plus importants que ce qu’ils ne semblent être et je suis très intriguée d’en apprendre plus à leur sujet. Je me suis aussi beaucoup posé de questions par rapport à Curran et ses agissements et même si on est persuadé qu’il y a une raison derrière certains de ses actes, on ne peut que douter et se poser un grand nombre de questions. Mais comme toujours c’est un immense plaisir de suivre notre petit couple et de les voir au cours d’une mission telle que celle-ci.

La fin du roman a été des plus impressionnantes et j’ai adoré voir tout ce qui allait se passer. J’avoue que j’ai été très surprise par le dénouement d’un des personnages et je n’arrive pas à réaliser que nous ne le reverrons plus… Mais ça sera à vous de découvrir ce qu’il se passe réellement. C’était un tome splendide et j’avoue que c’est toujours un régal de suivre Kate. Une fois de plus j’attends avec impatience la sortie du prochain pour voir ce qu’il va se passer.

Une série que je recommande et re recommande ! On ne peut qu’aimer !

Review: Hey you all know that I am a fan of Ilona Andrews and the Kate Daniels series, right? So how not to succumb to Gunmetal Magic? I’ll tell you, it is simply impossible! After reading Magic Slays, we have many questions about Andrea, including about her past because she does not want to talk about what she went through. This volume therefore responds to many questions that had arisen. What more can I say? All the characters in the series are there, so it can only be a pure delight!

Andrea has to investigate the murder of four persons of the pack and everything seems to be quite mysterious and strange about it. But this is not what disturbs our Bouda at first, oh no, it is the fact that she will have to work with Raphael to figure out who the culprit is while she has not seen him since her return. And I must say he is not really sensitive to her moods and does everything to provoke her, even bringing his human “bride” under her nose. But while their story is complicated, Andrea doesn’t know what she must do, and the problems amplify when some creatures try to kill her to stop her.

I do not know how my feelings would be at the end of the book, but I must say that I was totally conquered by this new heroine. Okay, I admit that when Kate was in the scene I had some trouble remembering who was the narrator in the dialogues, but this is only a tiny unimportant detail. Andrea is a character at the height of Kate, and we can easily get to understand and admire her strength and courage. Because I must say that she wasn’t really lucky in her life and we will be able to discover here her past as an abused child. It makes us sick at heart to see the obstacles she had to overcome, but we can only admire the person she has become. In this volume, we follow her decisions, doubts, and we discover her weaknesses along with her strength. Because it must be said that many things will change in her life now: a new Andrea is born.

Raphael is a great character too, he always have a lot to say and is determined to recover Andrea whatever she may decide. I loved their verbal sparring, it was so funny! I must say that they are constantly annoying the other. And while we had some little games in the Kate Daniels series between Kate and Curran, to show their interest towards one another, we have also that here and I was constantly wondering what would be the next step. Yes, Raphael was able to find Andrea’s limit, but she was really imaginative too! I loved it! Finally you understand that this is a new fascinating couple to follow.

We also learn a little more about Roman and Ascanio  these two characters we have not really had the opportunity to discover and who will be there throughout the story and I must say that I loved them very much. Ascanio is equal to himself, but it is sure that he is trying to acclimate. The funny thing is to see him alongside Julie I think. As for Roman, I am still very intrigued by this character and I hope we will have the opportunity to hear more about him.

Ilona Andrews is a master in Urban Fantasy and it can easily be seen here. I think it is impossible not to love this volume (okay I ‘m not very objective). In addition, I love everything related to myths and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the plot was revolved around it. I think it’s always fascinating to learn more like that. In any case, I’m conquered and I hope we will have the opportunity to discover many other spin-offs such as this one. But beware, do not act like me, telling yourself  before going to bed “and if  I was just going to read one chapter ?” Because no, it does not work at all, six chapters later we still have the same question.

A new great novel full of spice that I recommend to all the fans of theKate Daniels series. You will not be disappointed!
