Dark Alchemy by Laura Bickle

Synopsis: Geologist Petra Dee arrives in Wyoming looking for clues to her father’s disappearance years before. What she finds instead is Temperance, a dying Western town with a gold rush past and a meth-infested present. But under the town’s dust and quiet, an old power is shifting. When bodies start turning up – desiccated and twisted skeletons that Petra can’t scientifically explain – her investigations land her in the middle of a covert war between the town’s most powerful interests. Petra’s father wasn’t the only one searching for the alchemical secrets of Temperance, and those still looking are now ready to kill. Armed with nothing but shaky alliances, a pair of antique guns, and a relic she doesn’t understand, the only thing Petra knows for sure is that she and her coyote sidekick are going to have to move fast, or die next.

Review: Initially I was not sure that the book would be for me when I heard about it. But it is Laura Bickle we’re speaking about and so far I have not been disappointed by one of her novels. It was finally a good thing to try this adventure as the author conquered me again. Here we find a very original story mixing alchemy, mystery, murder, and magic.

Petra went to Temperance after a difficult history that left her a little disoriented. This city is the last known place of her father years before and the young woman hopes now to find him. Yet her research will quickly get complicated when she realizes that this place contains many secrets. Two powerful characters of the city compete in secret. It’s quite difficult to identify exactly what they are and what they really want to achieve, but one thing is sure, they are ready to do anything to achieve their goals. Accompanied by a coyote with whom she befriended, Petra finds herself in the middle of the intrigues of the city. Indeed, she finds a kind of compass on her land and it seems that the boy who calls himself the Alchemist is determined to get it back! But on top of that, she is interested in Gabriel and tries to understand him. This is a man who works for Sal and it looks like everyone avoids these people at all costs. The guy has many secrets and even though she knows that discovering everything could be dangerous, Dee is determined to understand what’s going on, especially when bodies start to appear all over town.

I enjoyed discovering our heroine, she tries to understand what is happening in this strange city, without forgetting that her primary purpose is to find her father. She will end in a story completely beyond her but always accompanied by her friends. I loved her relationship with coyote, this animal who appreciates her but who is not so ordinary. It’s funny to see how the two will become inseparable over the chapters. And then there was this man … Oh Gabe is very difficult to define and to understand. He’s hiding something and has some quite extraordinary powers and I was very curious to learn the truth about him. Besides, I have to say I was very surprised because the author had some very interesting and different ideas while creating a new myth.

I will not say more because we discover many things in the story, but in any case I was very interested from beginning to end and I hope we’ll have a sequel soon because I’m curious to see what happens to the characters after that. Laura Bickle once again presents a book at the height of her previous writings.

The Outside by Laura Bickle

The Hallowed Ones, Book 2

Synopsis: One girl. One road. One chance to save what remains…

After a plague of vampires is unleashed in the world, Katie is kicked out of her Amish community for her refusal to adhere to the new rules of survival. Now in exile, she enters an outside world of unspeakable violence with only her two “English” friends and a horse by her side. Together they seek answers and other survivors—but each sunset brings the threat of vampire attack, and each sunrise the threat of starvation.

And yet through this darkness come the shining ones: luminescent men and women with the power to deflect vampires and survive the night. But can these new people be trusted, and are they even people at all?

In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, it’s up to one Amish girl to save her family, her community, and the boy she loves . . . but what will she be asked to leave behind in return?

Review: I enjoyed the first book when I discovered it. I had with it the chance to experience the Amish community and its specifics and I find it fascinating to be able to learn more about it through some books, like the first volume that Laura Bickle presented us.

We find our heroine accompanied by Alex, Ginger and of course the horse in their new quest. They travel like that without knowing where they will end up. It is something terribly dangerous because they are only truly safe in the holy ground, which is not necessarily easy to find. Yet after visiting many places, allowing us to see the world as it is now for them, they will discover a community out of the ordinary, people who shine at night and scare away vampires. A chance of survival? But this alteration could ask much more than that our dear Katie is ready to sacrifice. Yet there isn’t more than this little hope which actually manages to glow. A really good idea found elsewhere and I did not necessarily expect that.

I enjoyed this novel even if it is very different from the first one. Far from the Amish community, the environment changes completely. Yet Katie, our heroine, does not let this exile change her way of thinking or even her prayers. I was really touched to see everything she did despite the dangers, but knowing that it was the right thing to do. She will evolve a lot along the story, understanding that it is sometimes difficult not to make sacrifices in relation to her faith. That the rules she has always followed are not necessarily the better now and she should be able to adapt to keep moving forward. Her history with Alex is also quite complicated. In this particular environment, she is not sure if their relationship is real or if it is just because they are together. Yet we see a perfectly clear link between them throughout the chapters and whatever happens, we know that they will stay together until the end. It was very touching to see these two lovers together sometimes trying to keep a minimum of banality. The two characters are very different from each other in a lot of ways and yet they also complement each other perfectly and this is something very interesting to see.

We discover in this novel some events that we do not really expect, but also many unusual characters. I loved seeing the place that the animals had in the story even though I think that it is not an easy thing to do. The novel touches us, saddens us but also gives us hope for a better future for them. I do not know if this volume is the last one, but if this is the case, it is really well done and it was a great pleasure to discover this new volume. This is a really interesting quest and it allows us to revisit the characters met in the first volume.

The Outside de Laura Bickle (VO)

The Hallowed Ones, Tome 2

The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle

The Hallowed Ones, Book 1

Synopsis : Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers are free to experience non-Amish culture before officially joining the church. But before Rumspringa arrives, Katie’s safe world starts to crumble. It begins with a fiery helicopter crash in the cornfields, followed by rumors of massive unrest and the disappearance of huge numbers of people all over the world. Something is out there…and it is making a killing.

Unsure why they haven’t yet been attacked, the Amish Elders make a decree: no one goes outside their community, and no one is allowed in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man lying just outside the boundary of their land, she can’t leave him to die. She refuses to submit to the Elders’ rule and secretly brings the stranger into her community—but what else is she bringing in with him?

Review: I have not yet had the opportunity to read books about the Amish, but it’s a very interesting topic. It is a culture so different from ours that it is always nice to learn more about it. I knew Laura Bickle by another urban fantasy series, one written under the name of Alayna Williams. But it is true that I was curious about this Young Adult novel. I would also like to thank Sullivan McPig who was kind enough to send me the novel to make me discover it. I really had a great time.

Katie is a young girl part of the Amish community, and like any girl, she dreams of a life full of adventures. But this is not the community that will offer her all that. Known for her acts of rebellion, she now only wants one thing and it’s to realize her Rumspringa and explore the outside world and all the things it has to offer before making her final choice. But when that time is almost here and that she hopes to leave with her lifelong friend Elijah, a very strange event occurs, cutting short all her dreams. Indeed, it seems that a great plague happenned in this outside world, making disappear any persons living in the neighbourhood village, and even two Elijah’s brothers who were there during that time. Therefore, the elders decide to close the borders of their land, preventing anyone from leaving or entering. But Katie is far from being a girl who follows the rules without question them, and after several decrees violated, she will commit an act that could exile her. Indeed, when she discovers a young man seriously injured outside the borders, she knows she needs to save him. However, this is not the opinion of the elders who want to kill him to shorten his sufferings, being convinced that nobody should be able to enter. But behind their back, she’ll take him home to heal and so have the opportunity to learn the truth about what is happening outside.

I really enjoyed the story of this novel and I really hope we’ll discover more in the sequel. Katie is a fascinating character to follow, she is brave, and of great kindness, but far from the Amish standards, she has many questions about the outside world and her faith. Although anxious about the consequences of her actions, she dares to defy the authority of the elders and do what she thinks is for the best. But this terrible event will completely change her life, making her question everything. And when she learns what is going on outside, she realizes that everything is sometimes more complicated than it seems. Through our young heroine, we also discover that her best friend Elijah only dreams of one thing, to marry her. But although she thought she knew him, we discover that it is really not the case. Alex, the young man she saves is also the most interesting character and it was a pleasure to learn more about him and understand who he was through the chapters.

This is a very good novel by Laura Bickle. She shares a story that is developing gradually in the course of the history. We discover and understand Katie’s doubts and suspicions, allowing us to know what she thinks and so discover a whole new world. I’m really attached to all the characters and I can’t wait to meet them soon.

The Hallowed Ones de Laura Bickle (VO)

The Hallowed Ones, Tome 1

Stacking the Shelves #23

STSmall_thumb[2]

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews
Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles, 1) – Gena Showalter

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I’d tell my sister no.
I’d never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I’d zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I’d hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I’d tell them I love them.
I wish… Yeah, I wish.
Les secrets du Démon (Kara Gillian, 3) – Diana Rowland
Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special talent: she can sense the “arcane” in our world, and there’s quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She’s also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they’re not summoners, and they’re not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

TO make things worse, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons-a Demon Lord-who helped save her partner’s life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she’s trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and…mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she’s not even sure who-or what-her partners are?

Thanks to the nice Sullivan McPig for this book!

The Hallowed ones – Laura Bickle

Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the “Outside” abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn—at what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning.

The weird Girls: A Novella (Weird Girls, 0.5) – Cecy Robson

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they’re products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, a little weird…

The Wird sisters are different from every race on earth—human and supernatural. When human society is no longer an option for them, they move in among the resident vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region. Could this be the true home they’ve longed for? Um, not quite. After the sisters accidentally strip a witch of her powers in a bar brawl, they soon realize the mistake will cost them. Because to take on a witch means to take on her coven. And losing the battle isn’t an option.

River Road (Sentinels of New Orleans, 2) – Suzanne Johnson

Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.

Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.

It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.
