The Danger of Destiny by Leigh Evans

Mystwalker, Book 4

Synopsis: WHY WHISTLE IN THE DARK…

There are very few days off when you’re on an epic quest. Believe me, I know. I’m Hedi Peacock—one half Fae, the other Were—and if being a half-breed with one foot in each world isn’t tough enough to manage, there are the four chambers of my heart to consider. The one who holds the strings? Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore. If I had my way, he and I would be locked in a bedroom, for eternity, but a pressing family matter needs my attention. It’s true what they say: A woman’s work is never done.

WHEN YOU CAN HOWL AT THE MOON?

My twin brother is being held captive by the Old Mage in another realm. Lo and behold, as soon as Trowbridge and I arrive in Merenwyn, we’re separated in spectacular, dramatic fashion—and I’m left to figure out how to maintain the fragile balance between my Fae magic and my wolf’s blood in a realm that cries to both. Not easy, particularly when I’m keeping an iron-grip on my temper so as not to dispatch with extreme prejudice the odd wizard or smart-mouthed mutt servant who crosses my path. My mama never told me there’d be days like these, but I’m not going down without a fight…or my mate.

Review: I did not know that this was the last volume of the series before reading it and I admit that I am a little sad to leave behind the characters I’ve learned to discover and to love. But much to say right now, I think this was my favorite volume. I enjoyed all the novels in the series, but it’s true that for the others that it took me a few chapters to really get into the stories. Here, surprisingly, this has not been the case and I was carried away by the adventures of this couple from the first chapter. It must be said that both characters have plenty to do!

As I said, we find our two heroes in Merenwyn, facing many new events. Yes, because one thing is certain, they do not have the time to get bored! Even if they are together in this new world that Hedi is discovering, they will soon be separated and our heroine will find herself left alone. We discover with her how the fae and the werewolves live together (in a rather difficult way it must be said), but we also learn a little more about the Magi and of course her twin brother. New characters appear, who will attend our heroine in her mission and that we learn to discover about.

Gone to achieve a specific event, our couple will end in a story that transcends them completely. Many things are added and Trowbridge is determined to do the best to help the werewolves he had left behind him to find his mate. Hedi has evolved a lot over the novels, she knows that she is not a savior, she does not want to be one which is quite nice to see. She only wants to save her twin brother and to return quietly home with the man she loves. Unfortunately nothing is easy. It is perfectly clear that they love each other deeply, but the previous novels have changed them and it’s true that nothing is as easy as it was before. They must learn to know each other to progress.

In all cases this novel was a very good conclusion, a very good story and I was glad to have the chance to follow our hero until the end to see how it was resolved.

The Danger of Destiny de Leigh Evans (VO)

Mystwalker, Tome 4

The Problem with Promises by Leigh Evans

Mystwalker, Book 3

Synopsis: NEVER MAKE A PROMISE…

Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore and my gorgeous mate, tries to protect me, Hedi Peacock, half-Fae, half-were, from all the trouble I get into. The thing is, my past is pretty messy and bad guys keep knocking down my door. Witches, thug bikers, the North American Council of Weres, dark magic Fae, and even an evil wizard are all after me. The Old Mage is the only one I really care about: He has my dear twin brother captive on the other side of the Gates of Merenwyn—not cool. So my alpha love is helping me to keep my promise to free my brother…

YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO KEEP.

Unfortunately, everyone who helps me ends up in a heap of trouble too—including my Trowbridge. Now, I admit I’ve had my moments as a shivering coward, hoping he will come to my brave rescue. The whole Prince Charming thing is hard to shake. But these bad guys after me mean business and those damsel in distress days are over. You know that “last straw” metaphor? That was two straws ago. It’s now or never. Again…

Review: This is a series that I like but it’s true that I always struggle to get into it… as for each novel elsewhere. I think we always need to persevere to be able to appreciate the rest of the book, because it is still worth a shot. I was also quite surprised to find the story right after the end of the second novel, which does not happen often.

Trowbridge is back but changed even if Hedi is now happy to have him with her, there is still so much to do. Yes because trouble always seem to find her between her promise to her brother and her desire to save him or the members of the council who are trying to kill herwithout her understanding the reason. Yes, she will have a lot to deal with. And thus we’re following our heroine in a mad rush, full of surprises, even if it is true that very few are good. And while she hoped to return to a normal life, it seems that none of this is possible now or in the future. And even the persons she cares about may well disappoint her in a way she could never have imagined. However, she also discovers that some would do anything for her and her soulmate.

Hedi has evolved a lot over the novels and does not hesitate to deal with problems and use all the gifts she has in her heart to achieve her objectives. I was quite impressed to see that she didn’t let things happen anymore and she now takes the lead, whatever others may say. Her life has never been easy and nothing seems to work out anyway, but it’s a pleasure to see what will happen. We also have some news about Lex, and it is true that just like her, everything about him breaks our heart, and I really hope that she will eventually find a way to save him, which I’m sure will be painted in more details in the next novel. Trowbridge is always the same and I love him as much for it, with a lot of responsibilities but also very protective when it’s about Hedi. So yes, a story full of characters we love and who will face many hardships together, big bad guys of course, in a story that has a more sustained pace. As I said, we must come to ignore the difficulty of the first chapters to get into the novel and to only exit at the end. Because, as always, the author had some very interesting ideas and a conclusion that makes us want to know more. I am very curious to have a chance to read on to discover how our couple will be able to manage this new problem now closing on them.

The Problem with Promises de Leigh Evans (VO)

Mystwalker, Tome 3

The Thing About Weres by Leigh Evans

Mystwalker, Book 2

Synopsis: THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER

In the never-ending saga that is my love-hate relationship with Robson Trowbridge, I, half-Were Hedi Peacock, have had a change of heart. Ever since I shoved Trowbridge through the Gates of Merenwyn, I’ve been the leader of the pack—hard to believe, right? The thing is: I’m half-Fae. So even though my Were side is ready to heed the call of the wild, the other part of me is desperate to take flight. And much as it pains me to admit it, life without Trowbridge is really starting to were me down…

I AM WERE, HEAR ME ROAR.

To make matters worse, the wolves of Creemore want my blood—and the North American Council of Weres wants me dead. So I’m just counting the days until Trowbridge returns from the other realm…and comes to my brave rescue…and becomes my alpha mate. Wishful thinking? Of course it is. But given all the mess I’ve been through already, what’s the harm in doing a little bit of daisy-plucking? Besides, Trowbridge owes me bigtime. A girl can dream.

Review: After reading the first book, I came away with a rather mixed feelings. So when I was asked to read the next one, I thought it was a good idea then to see how the second volume would be. And I must say that I was blown away by this new story and I am now very curious to have the chance to discover the next novel in the series.

We find Hedi in a place she never wanted, as well as in a situation that exasperates her. Indeed, since Robson went into this other world, our young heroine finds herself with more responsibilities than she would have liked. But even if it was only that… but everyone is plotting behind her back and refuses to accept her authority. Due to this, Hedi gradually loses her stature as well as her strong nature and becomes increasingly dull and it’s therefore difficult for her to stand up against anyone. I must say she has so many things on her mind and the absence of her  soul mate is felt deep within her every passing day. So when Robson is back with the Hedi’s brother, hope reborn in her, as well as the appearance of many questions. The time is not the same between the two worlds, and the much-desired return is far from what she had imagined … Robson and her brother as expected became two people she does not recognize at all. She will then have to discern right from wrong, but doubt still hangs over the truth.

Many events happen in this novel and we discover some revelations for the questions we had in the first volume. I was surprised to discover so much about the gifts of our heroine and to see how they would evolve. It was also quite sad to see the state in which she was at the beginning of the story. But over the chapters, her character changes, allowing us to find the person we had known. I was also very surprised and very happy to be able to attend the meeting with her brother. I confess I did not expect this at all, or the person he has become, but it was very interesting to find out that. I admit that Trowbridge was also a big surprise. I did not expect to see him so changed by his trip. He became hard, uncompromising, yet still in love with Hedi. But this fact makes us doubt and I confess myself more than once, I asked some questions about him, as our heroine. Of course, the answers come in time and I found that the ideas of Leigh Evans were really well found. Many surprises appear here, and the author has managed to keep the suspense throughout the story, allowing us to discover a large number of facts. I hope to have the opportunity to read at least the next one very quickly. The mix between Faes and Werewolves is very promising and the Leigh Evans ideas as unique.

The Thing About Weres de Leigh Evans (VO)

Mystwalker, Tome 2

Par ailleurs, Trowbridge me doit beaucoup.

The Trouble with Fate by Leigh Evans

Mystwalker, Book 1

Synopsis: My name is Hedi Peacock and I have a secret. I’m not human, and I have the pointy Fae ears and Were inner-bitch to prove it. As fairy tales go, my childhood was damn near perfect, all fur and magic until a werewolf killed my father and the Fae executed my mother. I’ve never forgiven either side. Especially Robson Trowbridge. He was a part-time werewolf, a full-time bastard, and the first and only boy I ever loved. That is, until he became the prime suspect in my father’s death…

Today I’m a half-breed barista working at a fancy coffee house, living with my loopy Aunt Lou and a temperamental amulet named Merry, and wondering where in the world I’m going in life. A pretty normal existence, considering. But when a pack of Weres decides to kidnap my aunt and force me to steal another amulet, the only one who can help me is the last person I ever thought I’d turn to: Robson Trowbridge. And he’s as annoyingly beautiful as I remember. That’s the trouble with fate: Sometimes it barks. Other times it bites. And the rest of the time it just breaks your heart.
Again…

Review: I was quite intrigued by this book when I read the summary for the first time. I love books about the Faes, so Fae mixing with werewolves seemed perfect for me. But this book is far from what I expected initially. I immediately had some difficulties to get into the story … I do not know why but we fall directly into the novel without really understanding what is happening and I had the impression of being a little lost. It took me a little while to understand what was happening.

Hedi Peacock is a young woman quite interesting because of her origins. Indeed half Fae, half werewolf, we wonder what will differentiate her from others. However, she lives a quite normal life with her aunt and a strange amulet until some werewolves come and try to steal her necklace while kidnapping her aunt. I must say that our heroine is turned upside down by this event, and the only way to get back her family member is to steal another amulet. Problem? Yes, because we have a big one here, this amulet belongs to Trowbridge, the werewolf she holds responsible for the murder of her parents. But getting back this object is much more complicated than she had expected and it will lead her in a terrible story. Who could have predicted at the outset that an alliance between these two characters would be so colorful? It was pretty funny to follow both.

I immediately appreciated Trowbridge, he is grumpy and loner, bothered by the little Hedi. I must say that she is pretty boring when she wants to! Our heroine is quite determined in her actions and we wonder what she is capable of. But she does not, however, think about the consequences of her acts which sometimes seems detrimental. Her nature is fascinating to discover. Indeed, her Fae’s nature has something different and I was curious to learn more about it. She has a nice gift and we do not understand all the ramifications, I’m therefore curious to see what will happen.

Regarding the story, I thought it was pretty interesting but I had some problems too. There are some lengths and it is true that I had several times skipped a few paragraphs. There are also many points that I did not quite understand and it disturbed me a little in my reading. I do not know if it’s personal and I wondered if I was the only one with that feeling. After half of the book, however, I was much more interested in the story and I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship, as well as the end that the author presents us. We find a lot of information that we had no idea about and it was nice to be surprised.

This book is a nice start and I’m curious to see what will result now. Major events happen at the end of the story, something interesting for the sequel.
