Undead and Done by MaryJanice Davidson

Undead, Book 15

Synopsis: Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor continues her rule in Hell in the scorchingly funny finale to the Undead series from New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson.

It had been a well-kept secret for centuries, but now the existence of vampires is all over the news, thanks to Betsy Taylor’s half sister (and the frustrated former Antichrist), Laura. Life for the undead will never be the same, and it’s up to Betsy to do some damage control. But her interview on the local news doesn’t exactly put out the fire. It more or less pours kerosene on it.

With all the added attention on supernatural beings, the werewolves are more than a little agitated (never a good thing) and demand that Betsy gets her interview skills, and her family, in order. And while things go from bad to worse in the world, Hell continues to be hell—especially when Betsy’s new parole program becomes about as complicated as you’d expect.

With a PR team launching a vampire-friendly campaign, the devil at large and out to make trouble, and mermaids on hand to see who falls—and how hard—the end isn’t just near. It’s here. And if anyone knows how to go out with a bang, it’s the queen of Hell.

Review: I have not read all the volumes in the series, I admit, but I have always had a pleasant time with all those I have discovered. So it is true that I was curious to read this last volume and to see how the story of our dear Betsy ended.

It would seem that, to take revenge, Laura, Betsy’s sister, revealed the existence of the vampires in the world. But to the surprise of all, our queen confirmed this fact and even perhaps mentioned without meaning to the existence of the werewolves who are not necessarily very happy with that. Besides having to deal with all the consequences of this remark, that is to say the arrival of the werewolves, or the vampires, plus all the journalists or even their opponents, Betsy must also manage Hell. Indeed, she decided to create a probation program to send some people back to earth to redeem their fault and it’s Jennifer’s turn here.

We follow in this book a lot of things and it is true that there is no time out. It was a very interesting novel and I was curious to see where the story was going to lead us. It was quite funny because the format of the story is different from what we used to have. Indeed, we pass from the present to the past from one chapter to the other without a precise order like a puzzle whose pieces are gradually assembled. I enjoyed discovering a little more about Jennifer and her past by following some of her chapters at the same time. Yes, a lot is going on in this book and I was surprised by some of the characters’ actions as I did not expect them for the most part. The author concludes the characters’ story fairly well, although it is true that some tracks remain somewhat open to make us understand that even if the problems are settled here, others will still occur.

I really enjoyed discovering this last volume and I think it will really please the fans of the series.

Vampire et Increvable de MaryJanice Davidson

Queen Betsy, Tome 15

DNF: Deja Who by MaryJanice Davidson

Insighter, Book 1

Synopsis: You couldn’t arrest someone for killing in a past life. You couldn’t bring a civil suit against them, either. They could only be legally penalized for what they did this time around—and what a dark circus the legal system had been before that legislation passed! (It was still a dark circus, but perhaps not as dark.)  But you could spot them, and watch them. You could set traps for them.

Leah Nazir is an Insighter. Reincarnation is her business. But while her clients’ pasts are a mess, Leah’s is nothing short of tragedy. She’s been murdered. A lot. If left to that bitch, destiny, it’ll happen again. Leah wants to know who’s been following her through time, and who’s been stalking her in the present…

P.I. Archer Drake has been hired by Leah’s mother to keep an eye on her. But the more time he spends watching, the more he finds himself infatuated. Before long, he even finds himself agreeing to help find the person who wants her dead. Over and over again.

Now going full-on “rewind,” Leah hopes it can stave off the inevitable. After all, she’s grown fond of this life—and even fonder of nerdy Archer. But changing her pattern means finding out who her killer is today. And as Leah fears, that could be anyone she has come to know and trust. Anyone.

Review: I discovered MaryJanice Davidson with her Queen Betsy series, and although I’ve never finished it, I had a good time with this humorous, full of ideas series. When I saw that the author was engaged in a new genre and even a brand new series, I admit that I was very curious to see how it would be and I was eager to immerse myself in this first story. Moreover, the author seemed to announce new themes and I was curious to see her ideas.

From the beginning, I struggled to get into the story. The theme itself is really interesting as well as the outline of the story but I did not really managed to connect with the story or the characters. It’s a shame because as I said I was curious to learn more. But it is true that when after a half of the novel, when I saw that my feeling would not change I preferred to stop.

In this first volume we discover Leah a young woman who has the ability to discover the past lives of people. Which is a little sad in the end is that the path drawn for us is unchanging in each life and each person finds him/herself in a loop that does not change. But now, Leah tries to help them or to trap them according to what they are and it’s not an easy task. Yet she is herself mired in a vicious circle where she dies murdered and where she is determined to understand what is happening and who wants to kill her! More than that, it seems that someone follows her and he could help her more than she thought.

Like I said the idea is original and good and maybe it’s the mood I had but it wasn’t a book for me. However, I’m sure it will please to others.

DNF: Deja Who de MaryJanice Davidson (VO)

Insighter, Tome 1

Undead and Unforgiven by MaryJanice Davidson

Undead, Book 14

Synopsis: If Betsy Taylor has learned anything about ruling Hell it’s: 1) she can’t do it alone, and 2) she doesn’t have to. She’s got the help of a devoted vampire king, a dateless zombie, an exhausted new mom, an unshowered cop, a bitchy ghost, a kindly dead priest, and her late stepmother (“Go Team Satan!”). But the latest major hurdle in her post-dead life is so big she can’t even see it until it’s on CNN.

Betsy’s father and half-sister Laura (a former Anti-Christ with a grudge) have outed Betsy to the world. It doesn’t take long for the story to become 24-7 headline news. What’s more, people are not only prepared to believe in vampires, they want to kill them. For Betsy, social media has never felt so…unsocial.

Before long the mansion on Summit Avenue is swarming with reporters, would-be vampire/zombie killers, and desperate emos begging to be turned. Betsy has been forced into the unenviable role as the reluctant face of the vampire nation. All she knows is, she has to look good—this is hi-def!—and stay true to who she is. H8ers be damned.

Review: When Betsy goes to hell, she takes Tina and Marc with her. They find Cathie, the father of Marcus and the Ant for a meeting where the one Betsy presents the 10 new commandments to them. When she returns to the mansion after receiving a text from Sinclair, she realizes that she was gone for two weeks and that her sister wants to prove her existence (and therefore that of all vampires) in the world. Moreover, Sinclair is annoyed that she does not want him to rule Hell with her.

In short, there is a lot going on in the Betsy life as usual (and I have not told you everything). What change here is to see her take the lead. She actually rules Hell and takes decisions alone even though she has all her support team. This does not prevent her from being as always funny!

There were a few volumes that I had found a little worse but there, I really found what I love about this series. It remains to wait for the next book which will also be the last of the series.

Vampire et Impardonnable de MaryJanice Davidson

Queen Betsy, Tome 14

Undead and Unwary by MaryJanice Davidson

Queen Betsy, Book 13

Synopsis: First: kill Satan. Second: reorganize Hell. Sounded simple enough back then, but for Betsy Taylor, managing “down below” isn’t as easy as she’d hoped – even if she is doing it with her sister, Laura, a bona-fide Antichrist. So yes, Betsy has been shirking her hellish responsibilities, but she’s been just so darn busy these days. And she’s not just yanking Laura’s chain. There’s a brand new baby drama involving a pair of uncanny (ok, terrifying) toddler twins, an upcoming birthday party that has to be planned, and, are you ready for it? Betsy’s dad – once so very dead – has been spotted in downtown St. Paul.

Now, despite all the chaos, Betsy’s friends rally around, helping her to handle all this fire and brimstone jazz. As for Betsy’s sister and dad – they have their own surprises in store for the vampire queen. And jolt by jolt, Betsy will discover that there’s nothing as heartwarming as family. Yeah, like Hell.

Review: Queen Betsy has always been a series with which it is easy to spend a great time. Each novel always brings a touch of humor, light moments and is finally always a quick and enjoyable read. I was expecting the same with that volume. I admit that I made a small jump in time since the last book I did read was volume 8. In truth, it’s not really a problem because the author gave some explanations about what happened before, even if it is true that I did not understand all the references. So I started with pleasure the story by finding the characters we all know. Unfortunately, I think this volume is my least favorite of the series.

So we are following again our queen vampire who must now deal with her sister Laura, the world of the underworld. To say that this does not enchant her is subjective and that’s why Betsy tries at all costs to find other occupations to have a good excuse to shirk. On top of that, Jess seems to behave strangely and our heroine is determined to understand what is happening, Tina’s birthday is approaching and of course we have the Jessica’s bizarre children at the same time. Although I found that the story was going a little anyhow, I found it funny to see how the characters behaved with children, to understand what they could do and so observe their next actions.

As I said, I had a little trouble with this new story. Personally, I found that there was really no common thread, no real plot and it was a bit too confusing and mixed so that I could really adhere to what was happening. The events of the history were a little too wacky or unimaginable that I did not understand where all this was going on. I think you understand why I was a little disappointed this time but that does not change the fact that it was nice to be once again in the world of the author and to find the characters. I’m curious to see what will result now, this volume may be there only to link the stories, sometimes it happens in a series with a large number of volumes. To see.
