Queen Betsy, Tome 13

Résumé : Un : tuer Satan. Deux : réorganiser l’enfer. Le plan semblait simple mais gérer « l’en-dessous » n’est pas aussi facile que je l’espérais même si ma sœur Laura, l’antéchrist, m’y aide. Bon j’ai peut-être un peu négligé mes responsabilités infernales ces derniers temps mais entre deux bébés jumeaux un peu spéciaux – ok, terrifiants –, une fête d’anniversaire à planifier et mon père – très mort – qui aurait été vu – relativement vivant – à St Paul… Moi, Betsy, reine des vampires, je n’ai plus qu’une seule certitude : la famille, c’est pire que les flammes de l’enfer !

Avis : Queen Betsy a toujours été une série avec laquelle il est facile de passer un très bon moment. Chaque roman amène toujours une touche d’humour, de moments légers et finalement une lecture toujours rapide et agréable. J’attendais donc la même chose avec ce volume. J’avoue que j’ai fait un petit saut dans le temps étant donné que le dernier tome que j’ai lu n’était que le tome 8. En vérité, cela ne pose pas vraiment de soucis car l’auteure nous rappelle toujours à peu prés ce qu’il s’est passé auparavant, même si c’est vrai que je n’ai pas compris toutes les références. Je me suis donc lancée avec plaisir dans la lecture en retrouvant les personnages que nous connaissons tous. Malheureusement, je pense que ce tome est celui qui m’a le moins plu de la série pour le moment mais j’y reviendrai.

Nous suivons donc une nouvelle fois notre reine vampire qui doit maintenant gérer avec sa sœur Laura, le monde des enfers. Dire que cela ne l’enchante pas est peu dire et c’est pour cela que Betsy essaie à tout prix de trouver d’autres occupations pour avoir une bonne excuse de se défiler. En plus de cela, Jess semble se comporter bizarrement et notre héroïne est bien décidée à comprendre ce qu’il se passe, l’anniversaire de Tina approche et bien sur nous avons les enfants bizarroïdes de Jessica par la même occasion. Même si j’ai trouvé que l’histoire partait un peu n’importe comment, j’ai trouvé ça drôle de voir comment les personnages se comportaient avec les enfants, de comprendre ce qu’ils pouvaient faire et ainsi observer leurs prochaines actions.

Comme je le disais, j’ai eu un peu de mal avec cette nouvelle histoire. Personnellement, j’ai trouvé qu’il n’y avait pas vraiment de fil conducteur, pas vraiment d’intrigue et ce qu’il est restait était un peu trop confus et mélangé pour que je n’adhère réellement à ce qu’il se passait. Les événements de l’histoire étaient un peu trop loufoques ou inimaginables pour que je ne comprenne où tout cela voulait en venir. Je pense que vous comprenez pourquoi j’ai été un peu déçue cette fois ci mais cela ne change pas le fait qu’il était agréable de se retrouver une fois de plus dans l’univers de l’auteure et de retrouver ses personnages. Je suis curieuse de voir ce que donnera la suite, ce tome n’est peut-être là que pour lier les histoires, cela arrive parfois dans les séries comportant un grand nombre de volumes. A voir.

Can you present you in a few words?

Former Air Force brat and medical test experiment, recovering Miss Congeniality, NYT best-selling author who didn’t go to college.  Are you underwhelmed yet?  😉

How would you describe the Queen Betsy series?

Paranormal chick-lit.  Sex in the City meets Salem’s Lot!  Betsy is a woman who is unamused (to put it mildly) to come back from the dead (after getting creamed by a Pontiac Aztec) and find she’s the foretold Queen of the vampires. She just wants to add to her shoe collection, deal with her roommates (two vamps, a zombie, and worst of all, a new mom) and be left alone. Too bad several thousand vampires didn’t get that memo…

How many books do you intend to write for the series?

I’m contracted through book 13 (book 12 is out in August 2013), and would love to write at least two more. Guess that’s up to the readers!

So Betsy, where’d she come from?

She was born and raised in Minnesota, graduated from Burnsville High School, and flunked out of the University of Minnesota.  Her mom is a Civil War professor and her dad is dead. Which is worrisome, because you’d think he would have showed up as a ghost (“I see dead people…and also sample sales.”) or a vamp (God forbid) or a zombie, but…nope. Dad’s just…gone.

Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?

Not really…they’re all ridiculous good fun.  Betsy’s voice is close to my own (we’re both tall, blonde, vain, selfish…) so she’s definitely easiest!

If you could meet any characters in your book, who would it be and why?

Wow, good one!  Probably Marc and Jessica. Betsy would aggravate me beyond belief and I’d be scared to turn my back on Sinclair. But I love Marc and Jess for their loyalty as well as their own selves and would love to hang out and just chit-chat.

Do you need to do a lot of research for your books?

Sometimes, though what’s nice about writing paranormal is that I can make up my own rules, so I don’t have to explain a lot of things because “that’s just how it is in the Betsy Universe”. However, for my FBI trilogy (ME MYSELF AND WHY), about an FBI agent with multiple personalities, I had to do tons of research not just on law enforcement and the justice system but also psychiatric disorders.  It was a lot of work but 100% worth it.

Could you describe your average day and writing practices?

Sure…my assistant comes over in the morning and we take care of fan mail, answer speaking invitations (I’m lucky in that I get many requests to teach workshops or give speeches and I love to travel, so I try to say yes as often as I can), run contests (I give away free books on my FaceBook page all the time…right now we’re giving away 1 copy of UNDEAD AND UNSURE a week!), put mailings together and occasional care packages for the troops (every few months I’ll mail a dozen of my books overseas; this started when a sergeant stationed overseas told me she loved my books and often traded shifts with other platoon members to have more reading time…talk about humbling!), track writing expenses…like that.  In the afternoon I read and edit whatever I wrote the day before, then try to write at least another 10-20 pages.  What’s really strange is that I have two home offices but do all my writing in front of the television!  (And yes, writing IS the best job ever.)

What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an author?

Hmm, tough one.  (These are great questions, by the way!)  One that stands out is when I was asked to give the keynote speech at a romance convention in Australia. I was thrilled to be invited and said yes, and even better, was able to take my husband, our kids, and my mother along for the ride. We didn’t have much money when I was a kid, and I knew she dreamed of visiting Australia her entire life. Thanks to my wonderful readers, I had the money to bring her along. Knowing I was making a dream come true for her meant everything to me.

What authors have been an influence for you? And have you read any books lately that you want to share with us or have you been too busy with writing to read?

Stephen King, Ann Rule, Carl Hiaason, Andrew Vachss, all for different reasons.  King because I love rags to riches stories…he and his wife had no money in the early days of their marriage, and his books made them millionaires. But they’ve stayed grounded, which I think is an important lesson for anyone.

Ann Rule because her true crime books make you care so much about the victims (my favorites are The Stranger Beside Me and Small Sacrifices). She also gets into the killers’ heads like no other true crime writer I’ve read.

Carl Hiaason because he’s funnier on his worst day than I am on my best.  I’ve literally cried laughing while reading his work.

And Vachss for his deeply dark Burke novels…he was the first writer to show me you can root for the bad guy!

As to what I’m reading, I’m in the middle of The Tigress of Forli, about Caterina Sforza, who pretty much set the standard for badass bitch back in the day,  and Under the Tuscan Sun, a wonderful cookbook stuffed with gorgeous pictures and delicious recipes (I love to read cookbooks, too).  Soon I’ll be starting Bad Monkey, Hiaason’s new release, and After Shock, Vachss’ new one (what luck that two of my favorite authors had new books out the same day!).

Last year you were in France, do you think you’ll come back one day?

Oh, I hope so!  I loved my visit there; it was so exciting to meet my French publisher (I have books published in 15 countries) and lots of readers.  As above I love to travel and would go back in a minute.  My husband and I just returned from a 3 week trip to Italy, and I’d go back there in a minute, too!

Are there any other projects you’re working on or thinking about starting in the near future?

Always!  I’m just finishing the first book in my new series, DEJA NEW, about a world where everyone not only believes in reincarnation, they can visit their past lives and try to head off making the same mistakes again and again.  It’s been such fun to write and, ironically, I had to do lots of research on historical figures as well as reincarnation.  Great fun and I can’t wait to see what my readers think!  And of course I have the next Betsy book to get on with, yay!

Donc, Betsy, d’où vient-elle ?

Wow, elle est bonne! Probablement Marc et Jessica. Betsy m’énerverait surement et j’aurais peur de tourner le dos à Sinclair. Mais j’adore Marc et Jess pour leur fidélité ainsi que leur propre personne et je serais ravie de passer du temps avec eux juste pour parler.

Avez-vous besoin de faire beaucoup de recherche pour vos livres?

Parfois, cependant ce qui est bien avec l’écriture paranormale, c’est que je peux faire mes propres règles, donc je n’ai pas à expliquer beaucoup de choses parce que «c’est seulement comment c’est dans l’Univers de Betsy”. Cependant, pour ma trilogie FBI (ME MYSELF AND WHY), sur un agent du FBI avec des personnalités multiples, j’ai dû faire des tonnes de recherches non seulement sur l’application de la loi et le système judiciaire, mais aussi les troubles psychiatriques. C’était beaucoup de travail, mais ça en valait la peine.

Pourriez-vous décrire votre journée moyenne et vos pratiques d’écriture?

Bien sûr … mon assistante vient le matin et nous nous occupons de courrier de fans, répondre aux invitations (je suis chanceuse, je reçois de nombreuses demandes pour donner des ateliers ou donner des discours et j’aime voyager, donc j’essaie de dire oui, aussi souvent que je le peux), je lance des concours (je donne gratuitement des livres sur ma page Facebook tout le temps … en ce moment, nous ne sommes pas loin de donner une copie de UNDEAD AND UNSURE chaque semaine!), emballer tout cela pour l’envoyer (tous les quelques mois, j’envoie une douzaine de mes livres à l’étranger, ce qui a commencé quand un sergent en poste à l’étranger m’a dit qu’elle aimait mes livres et négociait souvent quarts de travail avec d’autres membres du peloton pour avoir plus de temps de lecture … parler d’une leçon d’humilité!), le suivi des dépenses d’écriture … des choses comme ça. Dans l’après-midi je lis et édite tout ce que j’ai écrit la veille, puis j’essaie d’écrire au moins entre 10-20 pages. Ce qui est vraiment étrange, c’est que j’ai deux bureaux à domicile, mais je fais tout en face de la télévision! (Et oui, l’écriture est le meilleur travail.)

Quel est le moment le plus mémorable (bon, mauvais, ou autre) que vous avez eu dans votre vie d’ auteur?

Hmm, difficile. (Ce sont de grandes questions, soit dit en passant!) Qui se démarque, c’est quand on m’a demandé de prononcer le discours principal lors d’un congrès de la romance en Australie. J’ai été ravie d’être invitée et j’ai dit oui, et même mieux, j’ai pu prendre mon mari, nos enfants, et ma mère pour la balade. Nous n’avions pas beaucoup d’argent quand j’étais petite, et je savais qu’elle rêvait de visiter l’Australie. Merci à mes lecteurs merveilleux, j’ai eu l’argent pour lui apporter ça. Sachant que je faisais d’un rêve une réalité signifiait beaucoup pour moi.

Quels autres auteurs ont eu une influence pour vous? Et avez-vous lu des livres récemment que vous souhaitez partager avec nous ou êtes vous trop occupée à écrire pour lire?

Stephen King, Ann Rule, Carl Hiaason, Andrew Vachss, tous pour des raisons différentes. King parce que j’aime la misère à la richesse des histoires … lui et sa femme n’avait pas d’argent dans les premiers jours de leur mariage, et ses livres ont fait d’eux des millionnaires. Mais ils ont gardé les pieds sur terre, et je pense que c’est une leçon importante pour tout le monde.
Ann Rule parce que ses livres True Crime vous font vous intéresser aux victimes (mes préférés sont The Stranger Beside Me et Small Sacrifices). Elle rentre également dans la tête des tueurs comme aucun autre véritable auteur de romans policiers que j’ai lu.
Carl Hiaason parce qu’il est plus drôle sur sa pire journée que je le suis sur ma meilleure. J’ai littéralement pleuré de rire en lisant son travail.
Et Vachss pour ses romans Burke profondément sombre … Il fut le premier écrivain à me montrer que vous pouvez aimer les méchants!

Quant à ce que je lis, je suis au milieu de la tigresse de Forli, à propos de Caterina Sforza, qui est à peu la pire fille que l’on peut rencontrer, et Under the Tuscan Sun, un merveilleux livre de cuisine farci avec de magnifiques photos et délicieuses recettes (J’aime lire des livres de cuisine, aussi). Bientôt, je vais commencer Bad Monkey, nouvelle version de Hiaason et After Shock, nouveau de Vachss (quelle chance que deux de mes auteurs préférés aient eu de nouveaux livres le jour même!).

L’année dernière, vous étiez en France, pensez-vous que vous reviendrez un jour?

Oh, je l’espère! J’ai adoré mon séjour là-bas, c’était tellement excitant de rencontrer mon éditeur français (j’ai des livres publiés dans 15 pays) et beaucoup de lecteurs. Comme dit ci-dessus j’adore voyager et nous reviendrons vite. Mon mari et moi venons de passer 3 semaines de vacances en Italie, et je retournerais là bientôt, aussi!

Y at-il d’autres projets sur lesquels vous travaillez ou envisagez de créer dans un avenir proche?

Toujours! Je suis en train de terminer le premier livre de ma nouvelle série, DEJA NEW, sur un monde où tout le monde non seulement croit en la réincarnation, mais ils peuvent visiter leurs vies passées et essayer de parer leurs erreurs encore et encore. Il a été aussi amusant à écrire et, ironiquement, j’ai dû faire beaucoup de recherches sur les personnages historiques ainsi que sur la réincarnation. Beaucoup de plaisir et j’ai hâte de voir ce que mes lecteurs en pensent! Et bien sûr, j’ai le prochain livre de Betsy, yay!

Undead, Book 12

Synopsis: It’s no surprise to Betsy that her trip to Hell with her sister Laura landed them in hot water. Betsy isn’t exactly sorry she killed the Devil but it’s put Laura in a damnable position: assuming the role of Satan (she may not have the training but she looks great in red)—and in charge of billions of souls as she moves up in the world. Or is that down?

But Betsy herself is in an odd new position as well—that of being a responsible monarch suddenly in charge of all things more earth-bound: like her vampire husband Sinclair who has gone from relieved to ecstatic to downright reckless now that he can tolerate sunlight. And if Sinclair isn’t enough to contend with, Betsy’s best friend Jessica is in her sixth (and hopefully last) trimester. Considering she’s been pregnant for eighteen months, she’s become a veritable encyclopedia of what not to expect when you’re expecting. Oh, the horror…

And speaking of growing pains, Betsy and Sinclair’s adopted little BabyJon is finally starting to walk. And if the increasingly unpredictable toddler is anything like his extended family, precisely where he’s headed is anyone’s guess.

Je n’aurais jamais pensé que vivre en centre-ville serait aussi galère. C’est encore la faute de Satan, cette garce ! Elle m’a promis que je découvrirais les mystères du Livre des Morts sans devenir folle. Sauf qu’il y a une condition… Ma demi- soeur, Laura, et moi devons d’abord nous rendre en enfer afin de lui rendre visite et de faire par la même occasion un petit voyage dans le temps. Ça pourrait être sympa si nous ne risquions pas de chambouler le cours de l’histoire.

Undead, Book 8

Synopsis: FIFTY THOUSAND ANGRY WEREWOLVES.


That’s what Betsy is facing when she takes her werewolf friend Antonia’s body to Cape Cod, where the Pack resides at Wyndham Manor. Because Antonia died in her service, Betsy is alive and well—and wracked with guilt. She has no idea if the Wyndham werewolves will greet her with fangs or friendship.

While Betsy and her husband, Sinclair, try to make nice, their legal ward, BabyJon, freaks out every werewolf he meets. Meanwhile, Betsy’s posse back at the St. Paul mansion is not LOLing. Increasingly frantic e-mails alert Betsy to her half sister’s increasingly erratic behavior. Looks like the devil’s daughter is coming into her own—and raising hell. All in the name of making Betsy’s life easier, of course.

Review: I must admit that I have not read the 7th volume but after the 6th I was curious to get into a new adventure of our beloved Betsy. And well, I loved this eighth volume. I wanted to have the chance to discover more information about the werewolves and this novel allowed me to fulfill my wish.

Betsy, Sinclair and Jessica go to the territory of the werewolves to give them the body of Anthonia and to answer the questions they can have as they want to know what exactly happened. It is hard enough for our heroine who deals with the death of her friend but now, more than that, everyone is watching her as if she is the enemy. But Betsy doesn’t like this situation and she is determined to make friends … or enemies (yes, because it is often associated). In addition to this, we will follow the Marc’s life through his diary to know what is going on at the mansion with Tina and Laura. It was really pleasant to be able to follow both stories. They are equally interesting and it was fun to know everything. Well Laura went crazy with all these Satanists who want only one thing: to do whatever she wants, which is pretty funny. Especially when Marc does not know what to do and begins to be a little scared of her actions. The devil manages to change her daughter little by little, without anyone to notice it. I’m curious to see what will happen when Betsy will not be able to bring her back to her reason. Because her sister’s enmity towards vampires only grows more and more.
 
I enjoyed this new novel, it’s a really fast read. It was very interesting to see the Michael’s pack. It is in fact composed of characters rather atypical. Lara is a child we discover a little more with each novel and it is quite intriguing to see her behavior with others. We also have many questions about the baby here. In Volume 6, we had already some questions as we can notice some strange events whenever he is present and Betsy is now trying to understand what is happening. We can therefore discover the truth about him. It was pretty cute and quite handy I must say. Each of the novels allows us to understand a little more each protagonist and I’ll wait for Volume 9 with pleasure.

Résumé : Soixante-quinze mille loups-garous enragés !

Voilà ce qui attend Betsy lorsqu’elle ramène à sa meute le corps de son amie Anthonia. Celle-ci est morte sous ses ordres et Betsy, rongée par la culpabilité, ignore quel accueil lui réservent les loups. Avis : Je dois avouer que je n’ai pas encore lu le 7etome mais après le 6e j’étais curieuse de pouvoir me relancer dans une aventure de notre chère Betsy. Et je dois dire que j’ai beaucoup aimé ce 8evolume.  Je voulais avoir la chance de découvrir plus d’informations au sujet des loups garous et ce roman m’a permis d’exaucer mon souhait.
Betsy, Sinclair et Jessica se rendent dans le territoire des loups garous pour leur rendre le corps d’Anthonia et pour répondre au conseil qui veut savoir exactement ce qu’il s’est passé. C’est déjà assez difficile pour notre héroïne qui doit faire face à la mort de son amie mais en plus de cela, tout le monde la surveille comme si elle était leur ennemi. Mais Betsy est loin d’apprécier cet accueil et est bien décidée à se faire des amis… ou des ennemis (oui parce que ça va souvent de pair). En plus de cela, on assistera au travers du journal intime de Marc à sa vie au manoir avec Tina et Laura. C’était vraiment très intéressant d’avoir la possibilité de suivre les deux histoires. Les deux sont aussi intéressantes l’une que l’autre. Il faut dire que découvrir une Laura qui perd la tête face à des satanistes qui ne veulent qu’une chose : la vénérer, est assez drôle. Surtout que Marc ne sait plus où donner de la tête et commence à avoir un peu peur de ses actions. Le diable parvient petit à petit à tourner sa fille vers elle, sans que personne ne s’en rende vraiment compte. Je suis assez curieuse de voir le moment où Betsy ne sera plus capable de la ramener à la raison. Parce qu’il faut dire que l’inimitié de sa sœur envers les vampires ne fait que s’amplifier.
J’ai beaucoup apprécié ce nouveau roman, encore une fois il se lit vraiment tout seul. C’était très intéressant de découvrir la meute de Michael. Elle est en effet composée de personnages assez atypiques. Lara est une enfant que l’on découvre un peu plus avec chaque roman et c’est assez intriguant de voir son comportement avec les autres. On se pose aussi de nombreuses questions au sujet du bébé. Déjà dans le tome 6, on pouvait remarquer quelques événements étranges et maintenant que Betsy essaie de comprendre ce qu’il se passe, on pourra enfin découvrir la vérité à son sujet. C’était assez mignon et assez pratique je dois dire. Chacun des romans nous permet de comprendre un peu plus chaque protagoniste et j’attendrai le tome 9 avec plaisir.

Review: It is always a pleasure to read a novel from the Queen Betsy series, it allows me to have a break with the other books and each volume is always read very quickly. I also think that this novel is one of the best in the series.
Betsy has to face many problems alone in this book. It’s pretty crazy, because in each volumes that I had the opportunity to read we always find our heroine surrounded by numerous characters. But this time, no, she is really alone, either to think or find the solutions to her troubles. We don’t know what happened to her companions and we feel quite sad for her. Her godmother and her father died in a car accident, we learn that from the beginning of the story and I admit that I was completely surprised. I did not expect that at all! Past that, other things are added, Anthonia has disappeared, just like her vampire boyfriend or Sinclair and Mark. Tina is still in Europe and Jessica is worse than ever. It really hurts to see her like that, especially knowing that there is nothing that can help her to feel better. And everyone knows that our heroine hates problems, but even more being alone alone a few days before her wedding.
 
It was a very interesting volume, I didn’t expect the revelations and I was really curious to understand what was happening but it made me happy to see how Betsy managed to be on her own. Well she has sometimes some terrible ideas! We meet some old characters like new ones, such as the pack of werewolves. I was really surprised, they are quite atypical and their mood can change in no time. I hope we’ll see them again soon, because I am curious to learn more about them. Laura, the daughter of the devil, however, is more enigmatic. I feel that her character is changing gradually, and perhaps not in a good way, so I’d like to see how she will evolve in the coming novels. Otherwise of course our little Betsy is also changing, although she is always very stubborn. I am very intrigued by the evolution of her powers, I feel that we will be surprised.
 
It was a very good novel, and a nice surprise. One of the best novels of the series and I can not wait to see where MaryJanice Davidson wants to bring us. She had very good ideas here, showing us a whole new side of our heroine. I recommend if you have not read it yet!
