Giving Him Hell by Jamie Quaid

Saturn’s Daughter, Book 3

Synopsis: Tina Clancy is looking forward to a nice, quiet Christmas, but life has other plans for the newly-minted lawyer. As a Daughter of Saturn, Tina expects a healthy dose of crazy in the Zone, Baltimore’s roughest docklands. Sparkling holiday lights that spontaneously combust – check. Garden gnomes swimming in sauna-like snow melt— check. But when a blue blob crawls out of the red-hot sewer— that’s a bridge too far.

Soon, Tina is trying to exorcise a malevolent ghost, stop the ruthless local chemical plant from bulldozing her neighbors, and banish endangered tourists from her increasingly quirky home. At the same time, she’s trying to figure out whether her drop-dead sexy client, Andre Legrande, is a gift-wrapped present or a stocking full of coal. Oh— and Tina just may have accidentally opened a gateway to Hell.

Review: I like this original series and I was curious about this third volume. The story is in the same vein as the previous one and it was interesting to find out again our heroine.

Tina Clancy, now a lawyer full-time in the Zone, has many things to manage. Of course, there is never a break in this very different place and the problems start again fairly quickly. Yes even at Christmas there is no break for our characters. But the danger is there, threatening everyone and our heroine will have to quickly find some solutions to her problems. Between Andre who decides he wants to go further with Tina while she must manage him as a customer and Dane / Max who despite his position is still determined to start again an affair with the young woman and to protect her. Yes, our lawyer has much to do! But we can add to that some passages in a different dimension, relationships that evolve, ghosts returned to haunt the living and a strange blue light that can talk.

It was an interesting novel even if it is true I think it goes a bit all over the place sometimes. A little something is missing but the ideas of the author are very original and it was fascinating to discover more about the world and its characters. I confess what I enjoyed the most during the reading was to see Justine relationships with the two men in her life. She tries to draw a line for Max, she tries to resist with Andre since he is her client but her resolutions are hard to keep, especially when both are determined to make her flinch.

It was like I said a different interesting story. The novel is read quickly and the writing is quite fluid and while it’s true that sometimes I have trouble understanding some of the choices of the author on the aftermath of her plot, I spent a good time with everything and it was an original discovery again.

Giving Him Hell de Jamie Quaid (VO)

Saturn’s Daughter, Tome 3

Damn him to Hell by Jamie Quaid

Saturn’s Daughter, Book 2

Synopsis: Justice is blind. Justine isn’t. Book two in the Saturn’s Daughter series, in which Tina Clancy is gifted with the power to dispense justice…for good or evil.

Tina Clancy is adapting to her new life as one of Saturn’s Daughters while living in the toxic part of Baltimore known as The Zone, and occasionally acting as a champion of the downtrodden, the weird, the innocent…and the sometimes not-so-innocent.

Just when she finally lands a real law job, the Zone is blasted by poisonous gas and her sometimes-boyfriend starts receiving visitors from Hell. He’s none too pleased about that, or in Tina having sent his granny to Hell in his place. For that matter, neither is granny…

Review:  I was really looking forward to read this second volume after being overwhelmed by the ideas of the first one. I admit that I was quite surprised to see how the novel was going on; I did not expect that at all. Not that it isn’t great, no, but it’s just a little different and the story is focused on one big event. However, it also allows us to better understand some aspects of this world and all its inhabitants.

The area is swept by a terrible plague, indeed, nobody knows where this strange gas spreaded in the city comes from. Those affected fall into a very strange coma, seeming to sleep without that nothing can wake them up. But Justine is determined to understand what is happening and to save her friends who are in a bad shape. Of course, she could not do anything without the indispensable help of Max/Dane or Andre. But more importantly, this novel allows us to learn more about Acme and its ramifications. Something very intriguing and I’m curious to see where this will lead us.

Justine is not really used to take care of things, but since she lives in the zone and tries to accept her fate, she seems more inclined to do what needs to be done. And if she needs to give orders, to go break into a lab, become invisible or send people to hell, she is ready to do her best! It was really interesting to have again our beloved heroine. I must say that her Saturn’s daughter condition is really intriguing and I was curious to see the evolution and the limits of what she could do. We learn a little more about her although we still have many questions and I would love to know if she will manage to unravel the mysteries that surround her. Justy has become a very brave young woman and is ready to do many things for her friends. Of course, she will always be helped by Andre and Dane/Max. What about those two men? It is very difficult to decide between them and I confess that I have a little trouble to choose. They each have a little something that makes us want to see how they could be with our heroine. Andre and Justy play a lot of cat and mouse, but we wonder what would happen if they would let it go. But I understand the distrust of our heroine about this mysterious character. It, however, was really nice to learn more about him here and I hope it will continue in the third book. And what about Max/Dane? The Senator is always there for Justine when she needs help and he will do the best he can, even if he can be put in a compromising situation. We feel that he needs her and Justine knows it, but the change of body makes everything more difficult. However I am curious to see if she will eventually capitulate. Well I must admit that I still have a soft spot for Andre as he is also very mysterious, annoying and charming when he wants and I’m curious to see what will happen between our three characters.

It was a very good new volume, it allows us to deepen many points raised in the first book. The Jamie Quaid’s world is really fascinating and we always hope to discover the secrets that live there. In fact, we have some completely unique characters in a zone with its own rules.

Damn him to Hell de Jamie Quaid (VO)

Saturn’s Daughter, Tome 2

Iron Kin (The Half-Light City, 3) – M.J. Scott

Imagine a city divided. Fae and human mages on one side, vampire Blood Lords and shape-shifting Beast Kind on the other. Between these supernatural forces stands a peace treaty that threatens to shatter at the slightest provocation….I was raised to do the right thing. But to my family that means staying safe behind the walls of human society. To be a respectable metalmage and never put myself at risk. But the treaty is faltering. And if it fails, nothing is safe. To help save the city and everyone I care about, I will use whatever means I can to ensure the negotiations to renew the treaty are successful—even if that means forging an alliance with a man who is the very opposite of the right thing….

Fen is trouble. Wild. He would rather bind himself in iron and drink himself into oblivion than learn to master the visions that come to him. Those visions might just hold the key to peace, and it seems that my power might hold the key to his control—if I can keep it around him…

Heart in Darkness (Nikki & Michael, 2) – Keri Arthur

Life has never been so insane for Nikki James. There’s another teenager missing. She has another vampire to contend with. Her partner and best friend Jake is in the hospital dying. And a madman is kidnapping the wealthy. Just when it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, Michael returns-but not for her. This time, however, Nikki has no intention of running from either the case or from what still lies between her and Michael. And she isn’t going to let him run, either. The last thing Michael Kelly needs is a confrontation with Nikki-especially when his control over his bloodlust is still so tenuous. But when a kidnapper steps up his agenda to murder, he’s forced into a partnership with Nikki to keep her safe. Soon Michael discovers the biggest danger he faces may not be from his need to “taste” her, but from his desire to make her a permanent part of his life-a life that is sure to get her killed. Nikki is determined to make Michael see that life apart is worse than death. But before she can make him see the light, a specter from Michael’s past rises that could destroy any hope she has of a future with him. Because this time the threat isn’t physical. It’s a matter of the heart.Nikki must compete with the woman-the vampire-for whom Michael gave up life.

 ——————-
Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hi, I’m Jamie Quaid, of the cynical and evil mind.
How many books do you intend to write for this series?
I’ve been published long enough to intend nothing more than to finish the next book! Each book stands alone but with increasingly larger problems. Maybe we’ll blow up the world by the end. Maybe not.
Was it difficult to write the first book? How long did it take?
I LOVED writing the first book—once I got the story straight in my head, it flowed straight from fingers to page. The planning was the real difficulty. From idea to finished product may have taken over a year. And then I think it took almost another year before Pocket quit playing musical editors and found one who had time to read it! (Smooches, Adam!)
How do you find your titles? Did you imagine them all when you started the series or do you brainstorm each time?
I had three titles ready after a brainstorming session with two equally evil friends. I suspect BOYFRIEND FROM HELL is the only one that will survive the cutting board.
How did you end up writing Urban Fantasy books? Is there any other genre that appeals to you?
I’ve been reading fantasy all my life.  I fell in love with Patricia Briggs’ Mercy series and went looking for more like that. Mostly, I found werewolves and vampires and they didn’t feed my hunger for real characters in a warped world—even if the characters are a slightly odd shade of weird. So, naturally, I wrote my own. Since then, I’ve discovered the wonderful worlds of the likes of Darynda Jones, Seanan Mcguire, Kalayna Price and many many more, and I’m a happy camper.
I love to read, so any good book with good characters and story appeals. Heck, I’ll even read Dostoevsky. There’s some seriously heavy weird there!
What influences what you write?
Heck if I know or I’d do more of it. Music, newspapers, the Internet—they all feed the gremlins in my subconscious. Which makes my writing regurgitated gremlin gook,  I guess.
Do you write full time? If no, do you hope to eventually do so?
Yes, I’m very fortunate to be able to support myself with writing. Hallelujah and may the sun shine tomorrow.
Does the inspiration for the characters come from people you know?
No, not really. I haven’t met too many shape-shifting serial killers and hunky dimension-walkers around the mall. My characters might kill off a moron or two that I’ve run into,  but so far, that’s about it. And if you’re asking if I mentally killed my boyfriend for the set-up, no, but I did it for all my girlfriends out there!
How did you end up with so many incredible characters? I was pleasantly surprised to have Milo the shape-shifting kitten and all the others.
That’s my evil alter ego, who lurks in the shadows and observes mankind with a cynical eye. Milo just kind of showed up when I needed him, just like in the book.
Is there a character more difficult than the others to write?
Sarah, the chimp-shifting serial killer and abused wife. She has a sympathetic side and is so eager to better herself, except she has no moral compass. Really difficult.
Does your cover represent what is between the pages?
I’ve got a feeling I’ll be asked that often. 😉  The cover is fabulously striking. I love it. But I really couldn’t ask an artist to portray a character who  changes so drastically over the course of the book. So, yes, my protagonist is olive-skinned and has dark hair and rides a Harley. I’m pretty  certain she doesn’t do so in a leather body suit however. But she does wield a mean tire iron!
Who is your favorite character in the series?
Oh, Justine, without a doubt. Fabulously complex with all sorts of dilemmas facing her. Just think about it—what would you do if you were given the power to zap anyone who annoys you? And would it be worth going to hell over?
Have you already other plans for future series? Or is it top secret?
Let me write this one first! If the book gods favor me, I do have another evil idea I’d like to play with, but not just yet.
Can you tell us a little something about the first book? And the second one?
Short cover copy: Justine (Tina) Clancy is just an ordinary law student with a faulty arrest record, a part-time job in Baltimore’s environmentally hazardous  Zone, and a family secret so bizarre even she doesn’t believe it. That is, until in a fit of fury she damns her boyfriend to hell—and it’s exactly where he ends up. Much to her surprise, Tina is one of Saturn’s daughters, with the power to wield vigilante justice. But in between freeing Max from hell, saving her own neck, and solving a mystery that threatens the Zone and her newfound friends, how is she ever going to study for finals?
Second book, Damn You to Hell:  The Zone is blasted with gaseous fumes and pink flakes, old people are beating each other up, the locals are falling comatose, and Tina’s hunky neighbor gets arrested for murdering her boyfriend’s mother. Can she save her new home, her best client, and not send anyone else to hell?
Did you need to do a lot of research for your books?
My brainstorming friends live in Baltimore, so I visit there often. It’s tricky calling what I do “research” because I can’t put real chemical plants into a Zone that doesn’t actually exist, but I do try to keep the urban setting as real as possible. And I have an explosives consultant on hand to help me blow things up. J
Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?
Can’t possibly go there. I have a few thousand books on my “keeper” shelves.
Where is your favorite place to write?
If I had choices—by the sea. Otherwise, I can dream anywhere. I often take pen and paper to the patio, or my laptop to my favorite chair in front of the fire.
Have you ever been in France?
I have, and I would dearly love to return. There is never enough time to explore when you have only a week’s vacation. So I’ve done a tourist’s sampling of Paris and Nice and a bit of countryside, visited the perfumeries, shopped the designer boutiques, cruised the Louvre, the usual thing. I loved every minute. And we told the kids that McDonald’s served kangaroo meat so they’d eat at real restaurants!
 ———————

Synopsis: They say justice is blind. But Justine isn’t.

Justine (Tina) Clancy is just an ordinary law student with a faulty arrest record, a part-time job in Baltimore’s radioactive Zone, and a family secret so bizarre even she doesn’t believe it. That is, until in a fit of fury she damns her boyfriend to hell—and it’s exactly where he ends up.

Much to her own surprise, Tina is apparently one of Saturn’s daughters, with the power to wield vigilante justice. But poor Max didn’t deserve to go up in flames, even if he did almost run her over with her own car. Tina’s convinced someone cut the brakes—and now a relentless nemesis is stalking her through the Zone’s back alleys, where buildings glow, statues move, and chemical waste exposure comes with interesting consequences. Tina’s usually a loner, but now she needs a posse like no other: a shape-shifting kitten, an invisible thief, a biker gang, a snake-charming private detective, a well-meaning cop, and her sleazy, sexy boss. But in between freeing Max from hell, saving her own neck, and solving a mystery that threatens the Zone and her newfound friends, how is she ever going to study for finals?

Boyfriend from Hell by Jamie Quaid

Saturn’s Daughter, Book 1

Review: As soon as I saw the cover of this new novel I knew thatI absolutely had to read it. And after this synopsis, it did not take long for me to jump on this little gem. Well I must say that I am always ready for a good urban fantasy book, and I really liked this one. I loved the characters, I loved the story, what more can I ask for?
Clency Tina is a young woman who works in the Zone, this place that most people avoid. Well, a lot of strange things happen there and the people living in this placeseem to possess abilities quite incredible. However, she tries to not spend a lot of time there to work and become a lawyer. But things get complicated when one day, her boyfriend tries to kill her by rolling over her andwithout realizing it, she sends him to hell. Literally! And when she receives a word that announcesher that she is a daughter of Saturn, her whole life is turned upside down. We donot realize how much it will disrupt her routine. She will then have to manage with her own abilities and with the persons who now seem to want to kill her without she can understand the reason.
Tina is a young woman I really enjoyed to follow throughout the novel. Well, she is determined to do what she wants whatever everyone wants. And especially to pass her exams even if she is shot or if her life is in danger. We learnto discover her, understand her strengths and weaknesses, to see how she manages to adapt to this new world, as everything changes radically overnight without her asking for it. I loved theJamie Quaid’s ideas, she approaches new things that I had not yet the opportunity to read in an Urban Fantasy novel and I liked it. Discovering this new world we didn’t know anything about, some characters with unique abilities, and an involved plot, we can’t ask for anything more.
We meet many protagonistshere. It also arises many questions about them.If they are trustworthy, if they want something from our heroine, and especially what the Zone has changedthem into. We’ll find the truth gradually throughoutthe story, establishing the truth little by little to finally understand what is really going on. I loved each of them. How can we not love this baby cat? Impossible! Andwhat about Andrew? I asked myself a lot of questions about him, trying to figure out what he was trying to get from our heroine. Well I haven’tyet concluded on his case, but something is certain, we learn to love him more and more with each chapter. But he is not alone andall these people will help our heroine, much more than what we had originally thought. Well, she really need that even if she thinks she can handle everything all by herself.
As I said many things happen in this novel and there isno downtime. Not here, not any chance to get bored that’s for sure! The rhythm is sustained throughout the novel so that I couldn’t let it go until finished.
Well, I think you understand, I loved this first novel that announces a new great series and I really look forward to learn more now.
