Interview – Benedict Jacka + Concours

Welcome to Benedict Jacka, the author of the Alex Verus series. Thanks to him for his answers!

Question difficile.

Welcome on Between Dreams and Reality, can you present yourself in a few words?
I’m an author living in London who writes the Alex Verus series. I do quite a few other things, but generally, if a stranger knows anything about me, it’s because of my books.

How would you describe the Alex Verus series?
It’s an urban fantasy series set in and around London. Magic is real but most people don’t know about it, and magical society is ruled by mages. Alex Verus is one such mage, a diviner, which means he can see the short-term future in terms of probabilities. This makes him weaker than other mages in direct conflicts but stronger in terms of gathering information, which has both advantages and disadvantages.

Your series has been translated in different languages, did you expect such a success?
No, not at all! When I wrote Fated, I’d just had four books in a row rejected. So not only was I not expecting it to be a big success, I wasn’t really expecting it to be published at all. I never would have predicted that some day it would be released in French.

Chosen is going to be released in February in French, what can we expect?
Chosen is the book where you find out about Alex’s past. It’s also the book where Alex’s friends find out about his past, including the bad parts. Some of them take it well and some take it badly.

Book 10, Fallen will be released this year in English, how many books do you intend to write?
12.

What’s the hardest thing for you to write?
Usually by the time I start writing I’m fine. The hard part is getting started, because that’s when I have to plan everything out.

Did you need to do a lot of researches for your books?
Not very much. Sometimes I’ll have a scene set in a particular location that I don’t remember very well, so I’ll go there and spend an hour or two looking around, but I don’t have to do the huge amounts of research that nonfiction writers do.

Who is your favorite fictional character?
Tough question. Maybe Hazel from Watership Down.

What about the writing process most appeals to you? What is the most fun?
The most enjoyable thing about it for me is the independence. I can work where and when I want instead of having to go into an office every day. The flip side is that I have no job security and have to set my own rules and quotas, but that’s the trade-off!

Do you have a favorite author? Or a favorite book?
Favourite book is probably Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, but favourite author as a whole is probably Agatha Christie.

The world is about to end and you have to assemble your perfect apocalypse team with five fictional characters – who would that be?
I’d probably pick one of those characters that are ridiculously overpowered, like Rand from the Wheel of Time or Contessa from Worm, and then four other characters that I’d like to talk to and hang out with while the godlike one handles all the problems.

Alex Verus, Tome 3

Day 12 – Guest Post – Jeffe Kennedy (Concours-Giveaway)

Welcome to Jeffe Kennedy on the blog. She is the author of fantasy and romance series. Thanks to her for guest posts and for the international giveaway. The winner can win a signed copy of Edge of Blade (The Uncharted Realms, 2).

When I was a little girl, I found a tattered copy of MYTHOLOGY by Edith Hamilton at a used book sale. The subtitle is “Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes” and it has an image of Perseus with the head of Medusa. He’s naked, posed with a very phallic sword against a full moon (or setting sun) and oh wow, did I want to know what that was all about!

Yes, I was reading way ahead of my grade level. No, my mother never tried to stop me. Yes, I still have that book. (Published by Little, Brown in 1953.)

Of course I read the tiny print cover to cover, and I keep it because I use it for reference still.

While the tale of Perseus and Medusa turned out to be interesting – though I sympathized with Medusa, naturally – the one that truly seized my imagination was the tale of Persephone (or Proserpine).

Like most kids, I was fascination by abductions of all kinds. In this book, Persephone is carried off – complete with a dramatic illustration that includes fabulous horses, a chariot, and her long hair streaming behind her – by a god described as “the lord of the dark underworld, the king of the multitudinous dead.”

What’s not to love?? (I’m also Team Loki. I have my themes.)

Interestingly, this tale is traditionally framed as her mother, Demeter’s. Not all that much focus is placed on Persephone and what actually happens to her – which, of course, led me to imagine all sorts of things.

In some ways, by writing PRISONER OF THE CROWN, I’m still working out that fascination. I always wondered what it was like for these young, innocent daughters sold or stolen away into marriage. While my dark fantasies lead me into tantalizing sexual territory (which I’ve explored in other stories), I also know that these scenarios were the last thing from romantic for many women trapped in them. That’s what PRISONER is about. It’s not a romance. It’s a story of a young woman with no power to save herself, who finally does.

She’s Persephone freed.

The Uncharted Realms, 2

Synopsis: A HAWK’S PLEDGE
“The Twelve Kingdoms rest uneasy under their new High Queen, reeling from civil war and unchecked magics. Few remember that other powers once tested their borders until a troop of foreign warriors emerges with a challenge . . .”

Day 6 – Interview – Tijan + Giveaway/Concours (+ traduction)

It’s Tijan’s turn today. Tijan is an author that I really enjoy and she has many romance books that I can only recommend. I’m really happy to have her today on the blog. Thanks to her for the answers and for the giveaway of Ryan’s Bed or Bad Boy Brody (on audible US). If you haven’t tried any of her books, go for them!

– Welcome on Between Dreams and Reality, can you introduce yourself in a few words?

Hello!! I’m Tijan. **waving**

I write suspenseful and unpredictable novels. (Or so my reader group told me when I asked for them to describe my books!) My characters are usually strong, intense, and with a little bit of sass on the side. I started writing later in life and once I started, I was hooked. I live in northern Minnesota with an English Cocker I adore! And I’m so excited to be here with you guys!!

– Many of your books were firstly shared on wattpad. Is it easier to work on this platform?

I don’t know about easier. I first published on Fictionpress, but moved later to Wattpad and I wasn’t prepared for the response I’d get with my story, Fallen Crest High. I had readers upset with me for not writing a sequel and readers starting to write their own, and I sort of panicked. I self-published after that because I was scared of losing my characters, but it was the best thing for me. It started my career. I say the difference between Wattpad and self-publishing is that I get paid from self-publishing.

– How is your writing process?

What I do: I sit down, boot up Word, put my headphones on with good music, and I start typing. Sometimes it’s crap and sometimes it can give me the shivers. Some people plan everything with writing. I don’t. I do try to outline sometimes, especially with some of the ‘bigger’ novels that I know a bunch of people are wanting to read, but it’s very rare for me to keep with the outline throughout the whole book. I usually veer off somewhere and sometimes I come back to the ending and sometimes I don’t.

Writing is your own process. Write what you want to read, but just write it. I don’t think anyone can tell you how to write. You just have to do it for yourself.

– Why did you choose to self-publish?

Answered above, but besides that answer, I was hoping to make a career of this writing gig and so far it’s working. Here’s hoping it keeps on, though because you just never know!

– You write different kinds of romances (NA, adult…), is there a particular genre you prefer?

Oh, I don’t know. I really enjoy writing young adult, but I also love reading that genre and reading in the paranormal genre too!

– If you could choose one of your books, which one would it be?

Choose as my favorite? Maybe Ryan’s Bed at this point! That might change, but yeah, I think Ryan’s Bed right now.

– Your novels have been translated in French, how does it feel?

AHMAZING!! I can’t believe that happened. It’s the best feeling ever, and then also a scared feeling because you hope that it does good in that language too!! Reading the reviews are harder because I never know if they’re translated right or not. So I generally don’t know if my books are being enjoyed or not. I’m hoping they are!

– Who are some of your favorite authors?

Debra Anastasia, Jennifer Armentrout, Helena Hunting!

– Would you consider writing something different than romances?

Uh… maybe a psychological thriller? Maybe? Or a dystopian novel? I have tried that and it’s HARD! lol So who knows.

Bienvenue sur Between Dreams and Reality, pouvez-vous vous présenter en quelques mots ?

Bonjour!!

Debra Anastasia, Jennifer Armentrout, Helena Hunting!

Thanks to the author you can win an audiobook of Ryan’s Bed or Bad Boy Brody (on audible US). The other giveaway is Be/Fr only.

Interview – Darynda Jones (+traduction) & CONCOURS

We are happy to welcome Darynda Jones, de author of the Charley Davidson series. Book 12 will be released on October 2017. Thanks to her for the answers

(from many) : You told us last year that you didn’t know when the series would finish but that you already had a spin off in mind. Will it be about Beep ?

Yes! I’m hoping to start the spinoff early next year as we have decided that #13 will be the last Charley book. I’m both sad (really sad) and kind of excited to begin the spinoff. I want to get to know Beep so bad!

Lil evans : Who is your fav secondary character ?

Oh, man, so many! If I have to choose, I will say Cookie. She stands by Charley no matter what and loves her for who she is, not what she can do. I adore her.

Fofie B/Lil : Your series has been published in different countries, what is the cover that you prefer ?

I love ALL my cover art and I love seeing what other countries come up with. I will say, I am very fond of the UK/France covers. I think they are fun and fresh and sexy and just a little mysterious.

Fofie : If you had a power like Charley, and that you could see the dead, who would you like to meet ?

Probably all of my favorite authors who have passed on. First and foremost on that list would be Jane Austen. OMG can you imagine? I’d be like, “I’m a writer, too!” And she’d give me this look of disdain. I know it. Then I’d fall to my knees and worship her for creating my all-time favorite book boyfriend: Mr. Darcy. *swoon*

Sarah R : If you could have a TV adaptation of your books, would you accept it ? Do you think that the universe could be accurately transcribed ?

First Grave has actually been optioned twice by television networks here in the states but never went into production. Right now I’m working with a producer/director friend of mine in Charley’s hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We just finished a pilot script and have some very influential people interested in looking at it.

One thing about being on the writing end of a film-based work of fiction (a very different medium from what I’m used to) is that I realized the books can rarely be adapted to follow the books 100%. It’s next to impossible. I decided long ago that I would have no input on any film project. Writers simply don’t. And I am absolutely okay with that. A writer has to trust the writers and producers to create something from their work that appeals and tells his or her story the best way it can. That doesn’t always happen, but in order to jump into bed with Hollywood, a writer simply has to give up that control. I’m totally cool with that, but it has been fun to work on the pilot script. I’m excited to see if anything comes of it.

Laura : How did you end up the Charley as she is an atypic character that everyone loves ?

Believe it or not, I was laying in bed one morning, waiting for my turn in the shower, when she popped into my head in all her glory. Seriously, she showed up and said, “I’m here! Do with me what you will!” So I did. 🙂

Thank you so much for having me and I hope you enjoy the tenth installment in the world of Charley Davidson!!!

Guest Post: A Talent For Trickery by Alissa Johnson + Giveaway

Guest Post:

5 Things To Remember When Writing About the Victorian Era

I’m delighted to introduce A Talent for Trickery, the first book in my new Victorian-set “Thief-takers” series. Our hero, Private Investigator Owen Renderwell, is on the hunt for a thief and murderer. And he knows just how to catch his man. All he needs is a little help from our heroine, Miss Charlotte Walker-Bales. The daughter of an infamous confidence man, Lottie is in a unique position to offer insight into the mind and motives of a hardened criminal. There’s just one flaw in Owen’s otherwise excellent plan. Lottie hasn’t spoken to him in eight years. She has no interest in working alongside a man of the law, and certainly not the one who betrayed her trust, endangered her family, and broke her heart.

To celebrate A Talent for Trickery’s time period, I’ve compiled a list of five things to remember while writing about the Victorian era.

1. It spanned about 64 years and was a time of constant change. Even a year or two can mean the difference between bathing your characters in candlelight, gaslight, or electricity. Or dressing your heroine in petticoats, hoop skirt, crinolette, or bustle.

2. And on the topic of lady’s fashion…“Tight-lacing,” or the practice of cinching one’s corset to produce a 16 inch waist à la Scarlett O’Hara was rare. Most women did not go to such extreme lengths to gain an hourglass figure.

3. Some of the newest innovations, amenities and improvements were a long time coming for those in rural areas. London established a dedicated police force in 1829. It took decades more, however, for many country villages to expand their police force beyond a single, often underpaid and ill-qualified constable.

4. It was a time of great social upheaval. Power and wealth began to shift away from landowners to industrialists, and the middle-class started to thrive. A duke was still a duke, of course, but by the latter half of the 19th century, he had a lot less money and weight to throw around.

5. Morality was everything. In a lot of ways, the Victorian era was a backlash for some of the excesses of the regency era. At least on the surface. Men and women still cavorted and caroused (STDs were, sadly, rampant) but folks did their best to keep even the hint of naughtiness under wraps.

Top 10 favorite things about Writing Romantic Suspense

I’m so excited to be launching my first Romantic Suspense series with Stop at Nothing (Protect & Serve #1). I’m having a great time hanging out with the Dawson brothers and telling their stories as they try to find their way in life and in love. Here are just a few reasons why I really enjoy writing in this genre:

  • Action! Writing an edge-of-your-seat action scene is exhilarating. Bring it on!
  • Suspense, suspense, suspense. I absolutely love the process of building suspense in my stories!
  • Danger makes the romance more intense. Writing this kind of high-intensity romance is oh so much fun.
  • Battling the evil that might be lurking next door. Personally, I can handle things that go bump in the night. But the unknown and unpredictable danger that surrounds us every day scares the hell out of me.
  • Plots tend to be both plot-driven and character-driven simultaneously, so I can really dig deep as an author to develop both.
  • I’m a sucker for a complex, detestable villain.
  • Strong, kickass characters who are equals and rescue each other, both physically and emotionally.
  • The opportunity to show heroism and to celebrate the true heroes (police, military, EMTs, etc.) who put their lives on the line to help others.
  • A lot of the characteristics I love about Romantic Suspense are also present in action/adventure, thrillers, mysteries, etc. But with writing Romantic Suspense, I can still give my characters a happily ever after. 🙂
  • I love to read Romantic Suspense—now I get to write it! 🙂

Hello, and thanks so much to Delhia for having me back as a guest again for her anniversary! It’s lovely to be here, and today I’m going to talk about some of the magical creatures in my books. When I put my Spellcrackers world together I decided I wasn’t going to limit the supernatural creatures to one type, such as vampires, but that the world in the books would be populated by a whole range of different magical creatures, much in the same way that nature has populated our world with such an amazing number of different species.

So I started with vampires and fae (since they’re my favourite supes!), and the witches, and then added in the Others; a catch all term for those characters who, amazingly enough, are Other ;-). Some of the creatures classed as Others are trolls, goblins, pixies, gnomes, were-creatures, dragons, and there’s even a mini cameo by a phoenix in The Shifting Price of Prey, the latest Spellcrackers book! (Inserts obligatory self-promo *g*).

Once I started bringing in all the different supernatural species I needed to work out what characteristics they each had, how closely their characteristics would follow known myths and legends, how each species would mesh with all the other creatures both magical and non-magical, and come up with any unique ‘Spellcrackers’ tweaks I could give them. Here’s a little insight into the trolls in the Spellcrackers’ world.

There are three types of troll: mountain, concrete, and tree.

Mountain trolls mostly live in matriarchal tribes high in the mountains. They are born from troll parents and they’re a sort of ‘living stone’ (such as granite, marble, or slate). Mountain trolls are usually placid in nature, and are unwavering pacifists. When they’re young, they venture out to see the world and, of course, to work (they send a tithe back to their tribe). Due to their calm natures (and large size) young male trolls gravitate to working with the police or security, though they never join any military force as they refuse to participate in violence unless absolutely forced to defend themselves. Female trolls don’t leave their tribes as much as the males, though, as they’re renowned for their expert negotiating skills and political acumen, when they do leave it is usually to take up special advisory positions either in government or with corporate business.

As for what mountain trolls do for kicks, they have an affinity for bridges and whenever there’s a new moon they gather at the nearest sanctioned bridge and hold celebratory New Moon parties! One of Genny’s closest friends and her sort of ‘big brother’ is Hugh Munro, who is a mountain troll from the Cairngorms in Scotland, and who works as a Detective Sargent for the Magic and Murder squad at Old Scotland Yard in London.

Concrete trolls are formed (mostly from concrete ;-)) as opposed to born, and then animated by magic. They are similar to the golems of Jewish folklore, though unlike golems once a concrete troll is animated, it becomes an independent living, thinking being. Originally concrete trolls were enslaved to their maker (or whoever put up the cash), and they were mostly used for manual labour but thanks to the Chrystal Macmillan 1918 addendum to the British Slavery Abolition Act 1833, concrete trolls are now emancipated, and have the same rights as mountain trolls.

Unfortunately, since concrete trolls are made from inanimate matter, they don’t have the ability to reproduce and as such are asexual and so live solitary lives. However they do love gambling and casinos and, despite their sometimes crude manufacture, are very dextrous, so they can often be found working as croupiers or even running impromptu dice games!

Tree trolls are made from the wood of dryad’s tree. They are carved and pieced together (Pinocchio style) by the Southern dwarves, and animated by magic. Because of this, tree trolls are actually very rare and expensive, as dryad’s wood, even when reaped under agreed contracts, is dangerous to work with. Tree trolls were mostly used as scouts in forested areas to search out and harvest new and hard to reach medicinal plants (tree trolls are excellent climbers) but with cheaper ways of collection and greater synthetisation of pharmaceutical ingredients, tree troll creation had almost died out by the end of the twentieth century.

Tree trolls were ‘saved’ when the goblin queens discovered they could improve their offspring’s eyesight (after millennia spent in the darkest depths of the earth, goblins are virtually blind – something that is a disadvantage when working in the humans’ world) by introducing the occasional tree troll into the goblin family trees! Tree trolls are shy creatures, concerned less with parties and material things and more about the environment, so when they’re not being Courted by goblin queens, they spend their free time hugging trees and passively protesting any sort of deforestation.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading about the trolls, and if you’d like to find out more about them and all the other magical creatures in the world of Spellcrackers then why not have a read of my books! (Bats eyelashes – points to giveaway below *g*) Many thanks again to Delhia for inviting me!

———
