Malicious Mischief by Marianne Harden

A Rylie Keyes Mystery, Book 1

Synopsis: Is it strange to have the unemployment office on speed dial? Not for twenty-four-year-old college dropout Rylie Keyes. However, her current job at a small retirement home is worlds more important than all her past gigs. Fact is, if she loses this one, she’ll fail to stop the forced sale of her grandfather’s home, a modest lakeside bungalow that has been in the family for ages. But to keep her job she needs to figure out the truth behind the death of a senior citizen found murdered in her care.

The victim was thought to be a penniless man with a silly grudge against Rylie. However, his enemies will do whatever it takes to keep their part in his murder secret.

Forced to dust off the PI training she must keep hidden from her ex-detective grandfather, Rylie has to juggle the attentions of two very sexy, very different cops who both arouse and fluster her at the same time. And as she trudges through the case, she has no idea that along the way she just might win, or lose, a little piece of her heart.

Review: I always love this kind of books, humor, investigation and colorful characters … what more can we ask for?

Rylie is a young woman who can not keep a job long enough. Her dream has always been to become a private investigator, however, her grandfather refused and he formally forbade her to continue in this direction. Pretty sad thing for our young heroine, but she is still determined to make him change his mind. Yet when her grandfather leaves for 24 hours, she discovers a body in her truck and she is determined to figure out what happened. Especially when everyone thinks she is guilty, she or her boss. And she refuses to lose her job once again! Yet this story is going to be more complicated to understand than expected especially with Talon, the new cop so intriguing who seems strangely interested in our heroine .

I loved to follow Rylie here. She is a brave young woman, determined to understand what is happening. However nothing is easy, but luckily for her, she’s always helped by her friend Solo. Two men will stand for her: Talon and Zach. Talon is a very mysterious character. I struggled to understand exactly what he wanted from her. Yet he is a character we will gradually like throughout the novel, but we still have so much to learn and I’m quite curious to see what will happen. Regarding Zach, it is quite difficult for me to decide about him… We would like something between him and our heroine and at the same time it is a little unnerving to see that he does not seek for more.

I was curious to find out who the murderer was, and I do not expect such revelations and such culprits. I had, however, I admit, sometimes some difficulties to really understand the story as it moves in too many directions. But it was a pleasure to discover this first novel, especially when I did not know anything about the author, and I’m quite curious to see how the second volume will be. It’s like I said, a nice mix of explosive characters, secrets and humor that makes us want to find out more.
