Synopsis: When single mum Joanna hears a rumour at the school gates, she never intends to pass it on. But one casual comment leads to another and now there’s no going back . . .
Rumour has it that a notorious child killer is living under a new identity, in their sleepy little town of Flinstead-on-Sea.
Sally McGowan was just ten years old when she stabbed little Robbie Harris to death forty-eight years ago – no photos of her exist since her release as a young woman.
So who is the supposedly reformed killer who now lives among them? How dangerous can one rumour become? And how far will Joanna go to protect her loved ones from harm, when she realizes what it is she’s unleashed?
Review: I must admit that I was very intrigued by that novel. I didn’t know the author, but I think the topic is really interesting.
Do you know what impact a rumour can have? What are the consequences of assuming something? Jo will find out the answer to her questions when she starts talking about a rumour she’s heard. It turns out that a murderer could live in their quiet little town, a woman who, at the age of 10, killed a 5-year-old boy. But there it is, mentioning this only brings psychosis to the population and Jo starts to feel responsible, especially when people’s suspicions are focused on a young woman who has never done anything to anyone.
It was an interesting novel and the writing style is quite dense. I was very curious to find out if the rumours were true and what had happened to this 10-year-old girl who is now an adult. I must confess that I really didn’t see the revelation coming at the end of the novel and I found it very well brought and found.
You can see perfectly what rumours can do and you don’t doubt that things can happen in the same way.
Yes, as you can understand, this novel was a very good discovery!

Yes. I agree this was an interesting thriller-mystery! At first it got so confusing keeping track of all the S.M. initial characters though, haha! So many times I also wanted to shout at Jo to shut her big mouth because she just kept digging herself into trouble!
Melliane
I didn’t get that but maybe it was different in the French translation.
