As Darcy spends more time at Netherfield supervising Bingley and fending off Miss Bingley’s persistent advances, his unwilling attraction to Elizabeth grows—as does his concern about her relationship with his nemesis, George Wickham.

Setting the story vividly against the colorful historical and political background of the Regency, Aidan writes in a style comfortably at home with Austen but with a wit and humor very much her own. Aidan adds her own cast of fascinating characters to those in Austen’s original, weaving a rich tapestry from Darcy’s past and present. Austen fans and newcomers alike will love this new chapter of the most famous romance of all time.

Review: I confess I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice, but it is a movie adaptation that I love. So when I had the opportunity to read this book following the story about Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from the beginning but from the point of view of the young man, I did not hesitate. I must say that this is a very mysterious man and it’s hard to know what he really thinks, as his feelings. But here, Pamela Aidan allows us to discover all this and much more, allowing us to attend passages hitherto unknown.

I admit that I took a great pleasure in discovering Darcy and what he thought. I do not expect to see much tumult in him after his meeting with Elizabeth. It is strange to stand on this side, the two are very different and at the same time a lot alike. But his love for her is so incomprehensible and this woman so different from others that he never knows how to behave with her. Admittedly, as we know, our dear Bennet did not mince her words and does not care about decency when she has something important to say.

I was fascinated by the way the author had managed to take the essence of the characters we all know and I looked forward to every meeting with Elizabeth. However I had a bit more trouble to attend the parts not known in the original novel because she went beyond what we know, and the story of Darcy I was less interesting in those moments. I was also surprised to see that the novel does not stop at the end of the story of our two heroes. Indeed, there is still so much to say and the story ends before big events. And I’m curious to see what Pamela Aidan has for us for the rest of the story.

I also took a lot of pleasure to discover a little more about Charles here. Everyone easily mocked him by his simplicity and generosity, but I just think that’s what makes him an extraordinary character. And knowing the nature of Jane Bennet, we can only approve a couple such as this one. I’m just surprised that he also leaves her love easily fall over without a fight.

It was a pretty novel full of ideas, although it resumes the original work. I’m curious to know more about Mr. Darcy now and what he thinks later in his history.

Qui est-il vraiment ? Pamela Aidan se livre à une exploration passionnante qui nous entraîne dans le Hertfordshire où Darcy rend visite à Charles Bingley, et tente de repousser les avances de Caroline, la soeur de son ami. Alors que son attirance pour Elizabeth Bennet ne fait que croître, il voit d’un mauvais oeil la relation qu’elle entretient avec son pire ennemi…

Avis : Je l’avoue, je n’ai jamais lu Orgueil et Préjugés, mais c’est une adaptation cinématographique que j’affectionne particulièrement. Aussi quand j’ai eu l’occasion de pouvoir lire ce livre, suivant l’histoire de Darcy et Elizabeth Bennet depuis le début mais du point de vue du jeune homme, je n’ai pas hésité. Il faut dire que c’est un homme très mystérieux et il est difficile de savoir ce qu’il pense véritablement, de même que ses sentiments. Mais ici, Pamela Aidan nous permet de découvrir tout cela et bien plus encore, nous permettant d’assister à des passages jusque-là inconnus.

J’avoue que j’ai pris énormément de plaisir à découvrir Darcy et ce qu’il pensait. Je ne m’attendais pas à voir autant de tumulte en lui après sa rencontre avec Elizabeth. C’est assez étrange de se placer de ce côté, les deux sont très différents et en même temps beaucoup de choses les unissent. Mais son amour pour elle est si incompréhensible et cette femme si différente des autres qu’il ne sait jamais comment se comporter avec elle. Il faut dire que comme on le sait, notre chère Bennet n’a pas la langue dans sa poche et se fiche bien de la bienséance quand elle a quelque chose d’important à dire.

J’ai été fascinée par la façon dont l’auteure était parvenue à reprendre l’essence de ce personnage que nous connaissons tous et j’attendais avec impatience chaque rencontre avec Elizabeth. Cependant j’ai eu un peu plus de mal à assister aux événements non contés dans le roman initial, car il part plus loin que ce que nous connaissions, et l’histoire de Darcy m’a moins intéressée dans ces moments-là. J’ai été aussi surprise de voir que le roman ne s’arrêtait pas à la fin de l’histoire de nos deux héros. En effet, il reste encore tant à dire et l’histoire se termine avant de grands événements. Et je suis curieuse de voir ce que Pamela Aidan a pour nous pour la suite de l’histoire.

J’ai aussi pris beaucoup de plaisir à découvrir un peu plus Charles ici. Tout le monde se moque facilement de lui de par sa simplicité et générosité, mais je trouve que justement, c’est ce qui fait de lui un personnage extraordinaire. Et connaissant la nature de Jane Bennet, on ne peut qu’approuver un couple tel que celui-ci. Je suis simplement surprise qu’il laisse aussi facilement tomber son amour sans se battre plus.

C’était un joli roman plein d’idées, bien que tout reprenne l’œuvre originale. Je suis curieuse d’en savoir encore plus sur Mr. Darcy à présent et sur ce qu’il pense dans la suite de son histoire.
