All I Want for Christmas by Ros Clarke

Last night, Anna Gardner was the life of the office Christmas party—right up until she threw herself at gorgeous advertising executive playboy, Hugh Munro. Again. Last year, Hugh let her pretend their passionate kiss never happened, but this year he’s determined to make Anna admit she wants him as much as he wants her.

Except, Hugh doesn’t know the office party is the only night of the year his friend lets her hair down. That every hour she’s away from the office is spent caring for her sickly mother. That her mother’s condition, early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, is hereditary.

When Hugh finds out what she’s been hiding, he’s forced to do some serious soul-searching. It’s not fair to Anna or her mother for him to get involved casually, but casual relationships are all he knows. Can he prove to himself—and to Anna—that she’s all he wants for Christmas?

Review: I did not know the authors presented in this book, Christmas stories attract me more and more during this holiday period. So when the opportunity arose, I did not hesitate to start the volume to discover these two different stories.

“All I Want For Christmas” by Ros Clarke

I admit that I started the story without reading the summary, and I think I recommend it, given the few pages that we have here for this novella. But even if we can read it quite quickly, I found that the Ros Clarke’s writing was very nice to read and I really enjoyed meeting Anna and Hugh. These two people really appreciate each other, but for some reasons that we do not know, Anna continues endlessly to push this attractive man away. Yet when after a night of Christmas with too much alcohol, they kiss, it seems that she could not flee away from him anymore and whatever she does he always comes back to her. Hugh does not understand her refusal as he sees that she is also perfectly attracted to him as he is by her. He will therefore make every effort to understand what is happening.

I thought the story was really cute and I liked Hugh, we can also only admire the courage of Anna. The two characters are very sweet even if by cons I think things are moving a little too fast for their relationship at the end of the story. I was however pleased by such an outcome, and even though we know they still have a large number of things to live, we can only hope that everything goes well for them. A nice little light story.

And another author I did not know about and another story that I enjoyed to discover. Holly is a young woman who gets dumped by her boyfriend a few days before Christmas. This is a real surprise for her, especially at this time of the year. And even though she knows that there is nothing between them anymore, the damage is still there. But when a seductive and gruff colleague asks her to go to Scotland with him not to be alone at Christmas, she happily accepts. But she is not the only one who seeks to get away from her life and Noel likes to be alone each year in this cottage to forget the death of his wife three years ago. Yet while each is trying to leave space to the other, knowing that this is not the ideal time for a new relationship, something will the link them to create something really touching.

We discover the story of each character over the time they spend together. They open to the other and they discover a little more about their pasts like that. I think it was a very cute story and it’s a nice Christmas novel that depicts two people looking for something new and discover it with someone else.

A perfect read for this holiday season.

L’année passée, il a accepté de faire comme si leur baiser n’avait jamais eu lieu, mais cette année, Anna va devoir se rendre à l’évidence : l’attirance qu’elle éprouve pour Hugh est réciproque. Voilà la jeune femme face à un terrible dilemme : pour s’occuper de sa mère atteinte d’Alzheimer, elle s’est juré de mettre une croix sur les relations amoureuses…

“Une seconde chance pour Noël” de Faye Robertson (Holly’s First Noel)

Holly Jones, prof de musique, est dans une situation délicate pour les fêtes : elle vient de se faire larguer. Lorsque le séduisant prof de sciences de la classe d’à côté surprend sa conversation avec son ex et l’invite à passer quelques jours dans sa retraite écossaise, elle accepte aussitôt, ravie de pouvoir se ressourcer. Elle ne se doute pas un seul instant que, pour ce veuf qui fuit les fêtes depuis le décès de son épouse, sa compagnie est un cadeau inespéré.

Avis : Je ne connaissais pas les deux auteurs présentés dans ce recueil et pourtant, les histoires de Noël m’attirent de plus en plus en cette période de fêtes. Aussi quand l’occasion s’est présentée je n’ai pas hésité à commencer le roman pour découvrir ces deux histoires différentes.

J’avoue que j’ai commencé l’histoire sans  avoir lu le résumé, et je pense que je le conseille au vu du peu de pages que l’on a ici pour cette nouvelle. Mais même si le tout se lit assez vite, j’ai trouvé que la plume de Ros Clarke était très agréable à lire et j’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à découvrir Anna et Hugh. Ces deux personnes s’apprécient beaucoup mais pour des raisons que l’on ne connait pas, Anna continue sans cesse de repousser cet homme si séduisant. Pourtant quand après une soirée de Noël un peu arrosée, ils s’embrassent, il semble qu’elle ne puisse plus le fuir et quoi qu’elle fasse il revient toujours vers elle. Hugh lui ne comprend pas son refus alors qu’il voit parfaitement qu’elle est aussi attirée par lui qu’il l’est par elle. Aussi il va tout faire pour comprendre ce qu’il se passe.

J’ai trouvé que l’histoire était vraiment mignonne et comme Hugh, on ne peut qu’être admiratif devant le courage d’Anna. Les deux personnages sont très mignons  même si par contre je trouve que les choses bougent un peu trop vite au niveau de leur relation en fin d’histoire. On est cependant heureux par un tel dénouement et même si on sait qu’il leur reste un grand nombre d’épreuves à traverser, on ne peut qu’espérer que tout se passera bien. Une jolie petite histoire sans prise de tête.

Encore un autre auteur que je ne connaissais pas et une autre histoire que j’ai pris plaisir à découvrir. Holly est une jeune femme qui se fait larguer par son compagnon quelques jours avant Noël. C’est une réelle surprise pour elle, surtout en cette période. Et même si elle sait qu’il n’y a plus rien entre eux, le mal est toujours là. Mais quand un collègue séduisant et bourru lui propose de partir en Ecosse avec lui pour ne pas être toute seule à Noël, elle accepte avec joie. Mais elle n’est pas la seule à chercher à s’éloigner de sa vie et Noël, s’isole chaque année lui aussi dans ce chalet pour oublier la mort de sa femme trois ans auparavant. Pourtant alors que chacun essaie de laisser de l’espace à l’autre, sachant que ce n’est pas le moment idéal pour une nouvelle relation, quelque chose va les lier au cours de l’histoire pour créer quelque chose d’attendrissant.

On découvre ainsi l’histoire de chacun des personnages au fil des moments qu’ils passent ensemble. Ils s’ouvrent l’un à l’autre et se découvrent petit à petit en s’attendrissant mutuellement. J’ai vraiment trouvé l’histoire très mignonne et c’est un joli roman de Noël qui met en scène deux personnes en quête de quelque chose de nouveau et qui le découvriront l’un avec l’autre.

Un roman parfait pour cette période de fêtes.
