Void City, Book 1

Synopsis: UNREPENTANT. UNIMPRESSED. AND TOTALLY UNDEAD.


Being undead isn’t easy. All Eric wants to do is run his strip club, drink a little blood, and be left alone. Instead, he’s got business troubles (his best friend is souring on their co-ownership of the Demon Heart) and relationship troubles (his girlfriend is pressuring him to turn her so she can join him in undeath). And then there’s the memory loss: He can’t recall who he ate for dinner yesterday, much less how he became a vampire in the first place. But when he kills a werewolf in self-defense, things really get out of hand. Now he’s got a pack of born-again lycanthropes out for holy retribution–and his head. It’s almost enough to put lad off his appetite. Almost.


Review: I had this book for a long time and thanks to Vanessa, I took it off from my infinite TBR pile. I admit, I was a little anxious to get into it as we can read a lot of conflicting reviews. But I always think we need to try a book before having an idea about it.

Eric is a vampire working in the slums of Void City. Tabitha, his girlfriend of the moment is always annoying him so he could transform her into a vampire. But none of his relationship with a vampire never worked and he therefore categorically refused to do so, until one day, when he accepts and his life is turned upside down by this choice. Well He did not need it to attract more trouble between a pack of werewolves who is after him as they accuse him of killing the son of the Alpha, its losses of memories and a legendary weapon… Well he will be very busy.

My main concern was in relation to these two main characters, Eric is not really interesting except for his abilities. Well he is not entirely uninteresting, but many aspects of his personality annoyed me a lot. He does not care about anything or only when it really touches him personally, he does not pay attention to the others’ feelings and talk to people as if they were nothing. At the same time, he has principles he doesn’t want to break. Tabitha is an interesting character, well, I finally found her much better when she finally decides to take her life in hands. She is totally submissive to Eric and does everything he wants… I had a lot of trouble to understand her. Especially how she manages to fall in love with this vampire, as he is so mean with her. But the story will bring her some qualities and the confidence she didn’t have before.

However, I really appreciated Greta and Marilyn, both women have strong personalities and are completely unique. Although Greta is ready to do everything Eric could ask, she doesn’t hesitate to tell what she thinks.

It was difficult for me to get into this book but ultimately the more we advance, the more we appreciate the story. This is a rather unique writing style and I struggled to get into it. After that, I do not know if I can attribute the causes to the translation, but I wonder what will happen with the second volume. Indeed, this one starts a lot of things and the end is quite surprising. I am curious to learn more too. But I think I would read it later in English to see the differences. It will help me to know if I continue the series or not.

Résumé : Être immortel, ce n’est pas une partie de plaisir tous les jours. Certes, je n’ai pas beaucoup d’ambition dans la vie et mon club de strip-tease tourne plutôt bien, mais je voudrais qu’on me laisse tranquille. Malheureusement, mon meilleur ami et associé menace de retirer ses parts dans la boîte. Et comme les ennuis n’arrivent jamais seuls, voilà que ma petite amie me tanne pour que je la transforme en vampire. Je suis totalement contre. Mais pensez-vous, elle s’en moque.

Avis : J’avais ce livre depuis trèès longtemps et merci à Vanessa je l’ai sorti de ma PAL infinie pour faire une toute première lecture commune avec elle. J’avoue que j’avais un peu peur de m’y mettre étant donné tous les avis contradictoires que j’avais vu. Mais il est vrai qu’il faut toujours le lire par soit même pour se faire un avis précis.

Eric est un vampire travaillant dans les bas-fonds de Void City. Tabitha, sa petite amie du moment le tanne pour qu’il la transforme en vampire depuis déjà un bon moment. Mais aucune de ses relations avec une vampire n’a jamais marché et il refuse donc catégoriquement pendant un temps, jusqu’à ce qu’un jour il accepte et que sa vie soit chamboulée. Bon il faut dire qu’il n’a pas besoin de ça pour s’attirer les ennuis, entre une meute de loups-garous qui en a après lui étant donné qu’il aurait tué le fils de l’Alpha, ses pertes de mémoire et une arme légendaire, il aura de quoi s’occuper. 
Mon souci principal a été par rapport à ces deux personnages principaux, Eric est peu intéressant à part pour ses aptitudes. Bon il n’est pas totalement inintéressant, mais bon nombre des aspects de sa personnalité m’ont posé souci. Il se fiche de tout sauf quand ça le touche vraiment personnellement, il ne fait pas attention aux sentiments des autres et parle aux gens comme s’ils n’étaient rien du tout. En même temps, il a des principes qu’il ne brise jamais. Tabitha est un personnage intéressant, enfin je l’ai trouvé beaucoup plus appréciable quand elle décide enfin de prendre sa vie en main. Elle est totalement soumise à Eric et ne se rebiffe jamais, ce que j’ai eu pas mal de mal à comprendre. Surtout comment elle arrive à s’enticher de ce vampire si désagréable. Mais l’histoire lui apportera les qualités qui lui manquaient et la confiance en soi que l’on attendait. 
J’ai par contre énormément apprécié Greta et Marylin, ces deux femmes ont une forte personnalité et sont toutes les deux complètement uniques. Bien que Greta soit prête à faire tout ce qu’Eric lui demande, elle ne mâche pas ses mots.

Je dois dire que j’ai eu un peu de mal à accrocher au début du livre mais finalement plus on avance et plus on apprécie de suivre l’histoire. C’est un style d’écriture assez particulier et j’ai eu du mal à rentrer dedans. Après, je ne sais pas si je peux en imputer la cause à la traduction, mais je me demande ce qu’il en sera avec le second tome. Car, en effet, ce tome amorce tout de même beaucoup de choses et la fin est assez surprenante.  Je suis donc curieuse de pouvoir en apprendre plus aussi. Mais je pense que je lirais la suite en VO pour voir la différence, ce qui capitulera sur ma prochaine poursuite de la série.
