Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone

Three Parts Dead, Book 1

Synopsis: A god has died, and it’s up to Tara, first-year associate in the international necromantic firm of Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao, to bring Him back to life before His city falls apart.

Her client is Kos, recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Without Him, the metropolis’s steam generators will shut down, its trains will cease running, and its four million citizens will riot.

Tara’s job: resurrect Kos before chaos sets in. Her only help: Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of the dead god, who’s having an understandable crisis of faith.

When Tara and Abelard discover that Kos was murdered, they have to make a case in Alt Coulumb’s courts—and their quest for the truth endangers their partnership, their lives, and Alt Coulumb’s slim hope of survival.

Review: The first thing that comes to my mind now that I’ve finished this book, it’s its originality. Yes it is a completely unique story, and there is, I believe, no other stronger word to describe this novel. Indeed, I think we can immediately see it with the synopsis. It is, I confess, what pushed me to read it. Then there are not a lot of books featuring gods and I was intrigued to learn more about them.

We discover in this first volume, Tara, a young woman who has faced many obstacles in her life. After an unfortunate event in her school, her teachers leave her in a place where she nevertheless manages to escape and survive. Coming back at home, she will quickly realize that everything she has studied until now: the arts of resurrection, is very unpopular in her village. But she will be very quickly found by a young woman from an important necromancy firm who would like to hire her as a new partner. So here we are, embarked on a new story where our young heroine will try to raise an ancient murdered god, Kos, while teaming up with a priest and a vampire. But as a first job, it will be very difficult for our young heroine and she will have to keep her composure in a variety of circumstances.

It was interesting to discover Tara, she is ambitious but still honest and she is always trying to do what she thinks is the best even if it is not required. She will get into a crazy story where she should be careful to whom she wants to trust. She finds herself investigating the death of Kos, one of the last existing gods, something that is much more complicated than expected. Indeed, our young necromancer has an amazing talent for finding problems. And the more she digs, the more difficult it is for her to determine the truth, plus, many protagonists are constantly added to the story.

It was a very interesting story but also very complex and full of events of all kinds. We have to follow everything to understand what is really happening. I think it is really original to have blended religion and urban fantasy in the same novel. Especially when the religion is something specific to the book, and it was fascinating to learn more about it. The world Max Gladstone has built is extraordinary. I have not seen anything like that before and it was interesting to discover and understand the war we hear about from the beginning of the story, as well as the existence of gods and all the other creatures that we encounter here. The Kos town is also regulated in a rather intriguing way and I am now very curious to find out more about it. It was a very eventful story, presenting a special world which raises many questions.
