Little David Lost by E.S. Moore

Synopsis: Marybelle Lane would never say she’d had a perfect life. Nightmares haunted her nearly every night. Things she couldn’t explain kept happening. And just when she thought things couldn’t get worse, her dad died right in front of her, seemingly murdered by a nightmare turned real. But mercifully, the nightmares ceased.

Or did they?

Only a year after her torments ended, the nightmares have returned. Marybelle knows they are real, though no one believes her. She fears the night, knowing that if she falls asleep, she’ll be haunted by a world of dust where a trio of girls sing a rhyme she can’t decipher, by shadows that move…

…and by the decayed voice of a little boy she is beginning to know all too well…

David.

Review: ES Moore tried another kind of books in parallel with his Kat Redding series, and now he offers us today a horror young adult novel. I was really curious to see what this new release would be, especially as it allowed me to try a genre that I finally don’t read a lot.

We discover Marybelle, this girl breaks our heart at the beginning of the novel. Every night she finds herself facing the most terrible nightmares and whatever she does, doesn’t change that fact. This is not something new for her, it had happened before, but it had stopped a year ago with the death of her father. A father murdered by one of her nightmares become reality. But while they’re back now, something is still different. In fact, they now seem to materialize in real life and bully her physically and morally. It is quite sad to see our young heroine going through all this alone, because of course, she doesn’t trust anyone for fear of being called crazy. But if only it was all … But since her former stay at the psychiatric hospital, she is not accepted at her school and everyone treats her like she is nothing. Liam and his girlfriend love to target her and make her live a hard time whenever they can. While she could relax and forget all this life, her mother has found a new boyfriend she hates deeply.

We quickly like our little Marybelle and I thought it was sad that she doesn’t trust anyone to explain someone what is happening. She passes so many tests alone, she is so brave, it really breaks our heart. Luckily for her, her only friend is always there for her. Clarissa has everything to be the perfect girl, she is calm and completely loyal to her friend. Her time spent with her are the only respite she has during her long days. I was very intrigued by all the Marybelle’s nightmares. I tried to understand what that meant, especially with the appearance of the character in the story warning her against David. This name continually haunts her, but without her understanding who he is. I looked forward to this meeting with David to understand what he wanted. We don’t finally have a lot of answers at the end of the novel, but we can understand the reason when we reach the epilogue. This allows us to have an idea by ourselves.

So it was a very good story and I took great pleasure while reading it. The book is not very long and was quite fast to read. I am however sad for Marybelle but at the same time I’m glad to see that our girl manages to do what she wanted at the end of the novel.
