Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead by Patricia Eimer

Speak of the Devil, Book 3

Synopsis: Not Even Death Keeps a Good Demoness Down

There’s never an end to the crazy when you’re demon spawn. Not that Faith Bettincourt’s complaining. She’s been patching things up with her angelic on-again off-again boyfriend, Matt, and her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ Part Deux. Oh, and Faith is saving kids from Death in her pediatric unit one soul at a time. Life is good.

Until Faith accidentally runs over the Angel of Death and is forced to take his place. Now she’s taking lives instead of saving them. Which is kind of a problem when you’re a nurse. As if that weren’t bad enough, she is suddenly thrust into the worst scenario of them all–Matt’s ex Brenda is back, and she’s brought the Apocalypse with her.

Faith’s not about to give up the world…or her man. But when the chips are down, what’s a demoness supposed to do? Besides take matters into her own hands, of course.

Review: I love this series and it’s been a moment since I was waiting for this third volume. I was very annoyed with Faith in the second novel even though I loved her and I was curious to see how she would solve her problems. But I must say that when she finds a solution about a point, other problems appear, completely upsetting the life of our heroine.

After her separation with Matt, Faith finally understands what is good for her and she is now again with this extraordinary man. But of course nothing could long remain quiet and while she makes a run with her mother, she crushes the Angel of Death and is found in spite of what she wants with the power of Death. You suspect that as she loves to save people, so it is not the most glorious news… especially as when she touches any person, they’re likely to die. Let me tell you that this is a big big problem! Whatsoever it is about Matt, or her best friend who is pregnant and Faith is supposed to help for childbirth or about her job. But in addition to that, that power is a curse for those who possess it, and the archangel Michael is determined to retrieve the gifts he considers as his own. But his proposal is a little too good to be honest, and Faith does not yet know what to expect.

I once again enjoyed the novel, even if it is true that it is quite sad to see Faith in this condition and finding a solution could worsen everything. Yet it is always touching to see how she and Matt form a lovely couple. They are both really lovely. I expected a perfectly foul play by Michael but I admit that the end surprised me a lot and I loved how everything had been done. Of course, I found it quite « fun » to find Brenda, and I did not really expect to see her here (yes because I had not read the synopsis), even if she is crazier than ever.

I had a great time with this book again, the writing is light and simple enough and the novel is finished very quickly once we enter in the story. There is nothing complex in the intrigue but the novels of the series allow to have a little break and to have a good time. Another great find and I hope we will have more again soon.

  1. This series sounds great! I haven’t read too many light urban fantasy books, but I’m in the middle of the Molly Harper werewolf series right now and they are SO funny and cute, I just love them. It sounds like I need to give this series a try sometime too, thanks for the rec!
