Guest Post (+traduction) : The Sleeping King + Giveaway

We’re happy to welcome Cindy Dees today, the author of The Sleeping King, a great fantasy book. Thanks to her for the post.

—————

First, thanks so much for inviting me to come play with you and to practice my rusty French! Actually, I’m going to leave the translating to you, lest your French speaking readers get the impression that I’m illiterate.

Let’s start with a little background on me and my writing partner, the amazing Bill Flippin.  I grew up on a horse farm in Michigan. Bill grew up the son of a police officer in Boston. I became an Air Force pilot and part-time spy, and Bill became a software developer. I was not allowed to play Dungeons and Dragons as a kid. Bill designed an entire live-action game system called Dragon Crest. I’m a loud extrovert, Bill’s a reserved introvert.

How on earth did we come to be writing partners, you ask?

            Funny story, that.

My husband is an avid live-action gamer, and he tricked me into going to my first live-action game in New England. We lived in the south and I missed the magnificent autumns of my childhood. He invited me to come along and see the trees, read a book, sleep late. He didn’t tell me that five hundred people—including his friend, Bill Flippin—would be running around in costumes, armor, and theater make-up, hitting each other with padded swords, throwing little bean bags that represented magic at each other, and saving the world!

Extrovert that I am, how could I not be fascinated and have to learn more about what these people were doing?

As the Dragon Crest universe developed and grew, it became clear to me that it was the stuff of epic fantasy. It took me a while to convince Bill, but we finally wrote down some of the stories of actual characters and created THE SLEEPING KING. As an aside, both Bill and I have children entering, or in, their teens, and we wanted to write a book they could safely read.

It’s a big, sprawling world along the lines of Tolkien or Jordan, with wars, messy politics, factions jockeying for power, heroes and villains, mythic beings, and threats to them all.

The cool part is that the Dragon Crest world is a living place and continues to change and evolve every day. The forces of good and evil are colliding as we speak, players continue to go on heroic quests, and the outcome is still in question. If you were to ask me how book four will go, I’d say that I don’t know because the players have not written the story, yet.

Of course, Bill and I are the architects of the skeleton, but it’s our players who flesh out Dragon Crest and really bring it all to life. Hopefully, the books reflect that through the individual characters, many of whom are based on real people.

As THE SLEEPING KING comes out, we’d like to invite any reader who’d like to become part of the world to visit the website (which has a lot of extra information about the world), create a character, and begin playing in the world. Perhaps the easiest way to participate is to join the online chats with other players.

Bill is nearly done developing a full tabletop game campaign in the Dragon Crest world, too, in case our new friends don’t want to run around in the woods at night being attacked by monsters. Updates about that are on our website, too.

We just finished writing the second book in the series, THE DREAMING HUNT. If I were to behave myself, I would start the third epic novel right away. But Bill and I are both really, really tempted to write about a pivotal night in the history of the world about twenty years in the past known as the Night of Green Fires.  We’re still debating which story to tell first. We may end up just having to ask the players and readers which book they want first.

Thanks again for inviting me to visit, it’s been fun! I hope to see you in the fields or forums. I’m frequently there as Dasha, my gypsy merchant, or as Raina, of course. Grab my sleeve and say hello, and the first round of war stories and ale are on me!

The Night of Green Fires.

Synopsis: The planet Urth was once a green and verdant paradise. Powerful elemental beings with deep magic were stewards to this wonder, but not all could agree on its destiny. When gods war, it is the small who always suffer and the First Great Age ended with a battle that nearly destroyed all life. To end the conflict an Accord was put in place to preserve the balance of life, and the elementals withdrew their influence to allow new, less powerful races to grow and to thrive in the world.

That balance was destroyed, however, when the Kothites, a race of near immortals, came to Urth. In the ensuing centuries they have wreaked havoc on the planet, and the mortal races of men, elves, and other creatures seek a way to break free of the Kothite menace.

There is a fable told to those who hope that there is a Sleeping King, a powerful elvish elemental trapped in a spell, who possesses powers that may bring Urth back to health.

Many seek this treasure: a mad Immortal Emperor who would destroy it to ensure his race’s power forever. An avaricious governor who seeks to enrich himself beyond measure. Old powers seeking to capture lost glory.

A young girl seeking to thwart property to save her future, and a young woodsman out to discover a lost past. Together they might finally extinguish the Black Flame of Koth.

  1. Oooo I do so love fantasy, I’m definitely going to add this to my list. And check out the website for all the fun extras! Thanks so much for sharing Cindy and Melliane!

  2. I love that it’s a partnership of two people with such completely different strengths. The end result should be, if we’re lucky, a well-rounded work. I can’t wait to read it and learn more about this world.
