Baron by Joanna Shupe

The Knickerbocker Club, Book 2

Synopsis: Born into one of New York’s most respected families, William Sloane is a railroad baron who has all the right friends in all the right places. But no matter how much success he achieves, he always wants more. Having secured his place atop the city’s highest echelons of society, he’s now setting his sights on a political run. Nothing can distract him from his next pursuit—except, perhaps, the enchanting con artist he never saw coming . . .

Ava Jones has eked out a living the only way she knows how. As “Madame Zolikoff,” she hoodwinks gullible audiences into believing she can communicate with the spirit world. But her carefully crafted persona is nearly destroyed when Will Sloane walks into her life—and lays bare her latest scheme. The charlatan is certain she can seduce the handsome millionaire into keeping her secret and using her skills for his campaign—unless he’s the one who’s already put a spell on her . . .

Review: It was a while since I had not read a historical romance but it is always a real pleasure!

It took me some times to get into the story at first but, eventually, the rhythm changes and I was curious to see what was going to happen. We discover William Sloane, the owner of the railways, on the way to becoming a politician. However, Mrs Zolikoff is on his way. Trying to get his candidate up, he sees very badly that the man is consulting a false clairvoyant and William is determined to make this Madame Zolikoff understand that she must abandon her work. Unfortunately the young woman does not seem to be impressed. Ava had to take the skin of a clairvoyant in order to earn money. It must be said that she must save all she has to maintain her brothers and sisters, which is really not simple.

The encounter between the two characters is epic and dynamic. I admit that I loved seeing William and Ava interacting. I also admit that I sometimes wanted to shake William so that he realizes that he had the perfect wife for him and that he should offer her more than what he is willing to do.

It was a very nice read and I really enjoyed following Ava. It is a very sweet young woman who does everything for her family. Moreover, she does not hesitate to say what she thinks, which is pleasant enough for a woman at that time. William is initially difficult to understand. But we will learn to discover him gradually with the chapters.

To conclude, it was a pleasant read and I will be curious to read the first volume (yes because I started with this second novel), as well as the sequel!
