Alex Verus, Book 1

Synopsis: Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex’s own powers aren’t as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future–allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success.

But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever’s inside must be beyond powerful. And thanks to his abilities, Alex can predict that by taking the job, his odds of survival are about to go from slim to none…

Review: It’s been a long time since I heard about this series and what I heard was great. I admit that it’s been years since it was on my wish list so I can tell you that I was delighted to see it translated into French!

Alex thought he had left his old life behind him. Besides, he is now taking care of his little shop. But now, when one of his friends discover a magic object, his life is completely turned upside down. The young woman finds herself hunted by powerful mages who want to recover the object and who do not care if she is alive or not. And what about Alex? It seems that these same people, but also their enemy, the Council, need a diviner to recover a magical artifact and they are all determined that he agrees to be in their camp.

Facing once again with the world that Alex thought he had left, our two heroes will have to pay close attention to their choices and their actions. I loved discovering more about the world with Luna, seeing how hard her curse is and finally understanding that Alex is very attached to her. They will go through many hardships and will have to choose who they trust, even if everyone seems to want to win the favor of the diviner.

As I said, it was a very interesting novel with a universe that I loved to discover and I must admit that I am very curious to read more!

  1. Magic is my favorite thing and I saw Ilona Andrews liked this one. I’ve been trying to get to it ever since. In fact, I have it checked out from the library right now but I’m not sure if I will get to it this week or not. Sigh. Great review- Anne – Books of My Heart
