Death and Relaxation by Devon Monk

Ordinary Magic, Book 1

Synopsis: Police Chief Delaney Reed can handle the Valkyries, werewolves, gill-men and other paranormal creatures who call the small beach town of Ordinary, Oregon their home. It’s the vacationing gods who keep her up at night.

With the famous Rhubarb Festival right around the corner, small-town tensions, tempers, and godly tantrums are at an all-time high. The last thing Delaney needs is her ex-boyfriend reappearing just when she’s finally caught the attention of Ryder Bailey, the one man she should never love.

No, scratch that. The actual last thing she needs is a dead body washing ashore, especially since the dead body is a god.

Catching a murderer, wrestling a god power, and re-scheduling the apocalypse? Just another day on the job in Ordinary. Falling in love with her childhood friend while trying to keep the secrets of her town secret? That’s gonna take some work.

Review: Devon Monk is one of my favorite authors. Really! I loved everything I read about her and it’s true that I had not started her latest Ordinary Magic series. Yet, I was eager to immerse myself in this first novel!

We discover the city of Ordinary in Oregon. From the outside, it’s a city like any other and yet it’s far from being the case! Indeed, in the midst of humans are mixed vampires, werewolves and Gods! Yes gods! Those known from the mythology: Hera, Zeus, Poseidon, Thanatos, Thor, and many more! What are they doing here will you say? Well Ordinary is a city where Gods can come to spend holidays. By agreeing to let their powers away, they come to live a part of their existence in the middle of humans (without them knowing anything). It’s up to our heroine, Police Chief Delaney Reed, to handle all this in addition to her work and I can tell you that it takes time! Indeed, our heroine and her two sisters will face new problems here: a god is dead! This is a very big problem, especially when you learn that he was killed. But that’s not all because it seems that other problems are also related to the rhubarb festival of the city!

It was very nice to follow Delaney. We also follow her relationship problems and while she finally seems to interest her childhood crush, the sexy and very enigmatic Ryder, her ex comes back to town and hopes to get her back. A lot of complications in perspective!

I had a good time with this story and I admit that I am curious to read the second volume to see where the author will take us!
