Review: I am in love. That’s it, it’s official, I’m in love. But really in love, and I do not talk about dear boyfriend (which I love a lot as well, just in case he would read these lines, you never know).

No, but seriously, how not to be in love with Curran? And of this series!
Well, I’m going to have to expand my review a bit, otherwise you’ll think that by reading Kate Daniels, we lose neurons over the volumes.
No, that’s really not the case!
We fall in love, that’s all!

Volume 1 laid the foundations of the story by presenting us with a unique universe that oscillates between a wave of magic and one of tech. Kate Daniels, a mercenary who hides some secrets, evolves in the city as she can, living on scanty remunerated missions. We also have Curran (Ahhhh), the Lord of the Beasts and some members of his pack.

In the second volume, new characters appear: Julie, this undrained street kid, Andrea, Kate’s colleague or Bran, this little invasive but so endearing type, are good examples. They give more thickness to Kate, break her carapace of “I do not care” and make her very touching, almost human. We also find Dereck, still cute, Saiman, still mysterious (I like his exchanges with Kate) or Jim and his always sharp teeth.

Ilona Andrews uses mythology (Celtic here) to create a world where everything is possible. If magic had appropriated this universe, shaping the city of Atlanta at will, why would the Gods be absent from the game board? It is very skillfully conducted and the “striking” side of the God in question has even given me cold sweats. He brings to the narrative his share of action and hemoglobin and puts Kate in difficulties while she was already facing a magical tsunami.

Good, who says action, says … Curran! (Hysterical Cries!)

When Curran enters, it is the promise not only of slobbery on the corners of the lips (sorry for these details, but we talk about Curran there), but also of succulent verbal jousts between him and Kate. The game of cat and mouse is really well brought. One senses certain changes in Curran, Kate’s incomprehension, a challenge for both, as if they understand that they are the two sides of the same coin and did not know how to cohabit. Their relationship is built up slowly, gently, and is savored at every stage of its evolution. We advance step by step, a little like our progression in this world in perpetual motion which reserves us its lot of surprises.

That’s it. I’m in love. And now I have a big problem. I heard that there was a Jacuzzi story in volume 3, and I want to believe it concerns Curran. Follow my reasoning: Curran + jacuzzi = … Pfiou, I do not even want to think about the result, because I do not have volume 3!

Ahhhh, the wait is going to be long, very long, but I will be strong … And I will probably re-read volumes 1 and 2, to wait patiently!

Résumé :

À Atlanta, les tempéraments – et les températures – sont sur le point de devenir explosifs.

Kate Daniels, mercenaire spécialisée dans le “nettoyage” des problèmes surnaturels, a vu beaucoup de choses incroyables.

Régulièrement, les vagues magiques balayent Atlanta comme des marées.

Mais une fois tous les sept ans, c’est un tsunami magique qui s’abat sur la ville et, cette fois, Kate va se retrouver avec un problème bien plus important que d’habitude. Un problème d’ordre divin.

Quand elle s’engage à retrouver des cartes volées à la Meute, le clan des Changeformes, Kate découvre rapidement que l’enjeu est plus important qu’il n’y paraît.

Ces cartes ne sont que la première étape d’une confrontation entre des dieux qui espèrent renaitre.

Et si elle ne veut pas que sa ville soit détruite, Kate va devoir tout mettre en oeuvre pour éviter le cataclysme.

Avis : Je suis amoureuse. Ça y est, c’est officiel, je suis amoureuse. Mais amoureuse d’amour, hein, et je ne parle pas de Doux chéri (que j’aime quand même d’amour fou hein, juste au cas où il lirait ces lignes, on ne sait jamais).

Non mais sérieusement, comment ne pas être amoureuse de Curran ? Et de cette saga !

Bon, il va falloir que j’étoffe un peu ma chronique sinon vous allez penser qu’en lisant Kate Daniels, on perd des neurones au fil des tomes.

Non, non, pas du tout.

On tombe amoureuse, c’est tout !

Le tome 1 posait les bases de l’histoire en nous présentant cet univers si particulier qui oscille entre vague de magie et vague tech. Kate Daniels, une mercenaire qui dissimule quelques secrets, évolue dans la ville comme elle peut, vivant de missions maigrement rétribuées. On rencontrait aussi Curran (Ahhhh), le Seigneur des Bêtes et quelques membres de sa Meute.

Dans le tome 2, de nouveaux personnages font leur apparition : Julie, cette gamine des rue sous-alimentée, Andrea, la collègue de Kate ou encore Bran, ce type un peu envahissant mais tellement attachant, en sont de bons exemples. Ils donnent plus d’épaisseur à Kate, cassent sa carapace de « je me fous de tout » et la rendent très touchante, presque humaine. On retrouve également Dereck, toujours aussi mignon, Saiman, toujours aussi mystérieux (j’aime beaucoup ses échanges avec Kate) ou encore Jim et ses dents toujours aussi acérées.

Ilona Andrews se sert de la mythologie (celtique ici) pour créer un monde où finalement tout est possible. Si la magie s’est appropriée cet univers, modelant la ville d’Atlanta à sa guise, pourquoi les Dieux seraient-ils absents du plateau de jeu ? C’est très habilement mené et le côté « frappadingue » du Dieu en question m’a même donné des sueurs froides. Il apporte au récit son lot d’action et d’hémoglobine et met Kate en difficultés alors qu’elle devait déjà affronter un tsunami magique.

Bon, qui dit action, dit… Curran ! (Cris hystériques ! )

Quand Curran fait son entrée, c’est la promesse, non seulement de bave aux coins des lèvres (désolée pour ces détails, mais on parle de Curran là), mais aussi de joutes verbales succulentes entre lui et Kate. Le jeu du Chat et de la souris est vraiment très bien amené. On sent certains changements chez Curran, de l’incompréhension chez Kate, un défi pour les deux, comme s’ils avaient compris qu’ils sont les deux faces d’une même pièce de monnaie et ne savaient pas comment faire pour cohabiter. Leur relation se construit peu à peu, en douceur, on la savoure à chaque stade de son évolution. On avance pas à pas, un peu comme notre progression dans ce monde en mouvement perpétuel qui nous réserve son lot de surprises.

Voilà, c’est dit. Je suis amoureuse d’amour. Et maintenant, j’ai un gros problème. J’ai ouï dire qu’il y avait une histoire de jacuzzi dans le tome 3, et je veux croire qu’elle concerne Curran. Suivez mon raisonnement : Curran + jacuzzi =… Pfiou, je ne veux même pas penser au résultat, parce que je n’ai pas le tome 3.

Ahhhh, l’attente va être longue, très longue, mais je serai forte… Et sans doute relirai-je les tomes 1 et 2, histoire de patienter !

Since magic is everywhere, some institutions are necessary to maintain the fragile order of this balance in equilibrium, the Pack is one, the Guild is another. And Kate Daniels finds herself in the middle.

Kate is a Merc, a Mercenary who offers her services to solve problems that the police can not handle. Magic, she knows it, it lives in her. This kick-ass girl, a little burned head, tries to mingle in the mass of Atlanta, doing her job without attracting too much attention. But it is difficult not to attract attention when one is what she is, and especially when her mentor had been murdered.

It’s been a long time since I heard of Kate Daniels, but she had never crossed my path. Melliane had insisted a lot, but I do not know why, I had made resistance. I wonder if it was not because of the initial covers that did not necessarily highlight the series. Mxm bought it and the opportunity finally came.

The first observation is that the cover is much more enticing and as I am a superficial girl, I was immediately seduced.

Second observation: “Houston, we have a problem, a big problem, higher than Everest”, I am addicted and right after one volume.

I know, I’m weak …

But in my defense, Kate Daniels has everything to please me: an original universe, a strong heroine, a hero of whom, I feel, I will fall in love, a rich intrigue, full of action and twists and turns.

Because, you see, I am a reader who needs to be embarked to be able to giggle quietly in her corner, a reader quite demanding regarding the background of the plot at the risk of passing by. And there the reader that I am was so embarked that she did not let go of this volume 1, even to go to the toilet … And the reader that I am, has also giggled in front of certain repartee and even sighed at each appearance of Curran (he is promising that one! – dreamy smile on my face).

No, no, do not laugh.

No, I’m not weak. (The first one who says that I’m contradicting myself, I pull the tongue out of him.) Chat du Cheshire, I saw you!)

And no, I did not jiggle during my reading. Well, just a little bit. When sweet boyfriend was working conscientiously on his computer and when he could not see me. I have my pride and dignity to preserve. Still.

Giggle-counter and sigh-counter were switched on (as well as funk-counter, but well, keep it for you, eh …) and we come to my third observation: always trust Melliane when she tells me that a series is top!

Résumé : À Atlanta deux réalités s’opposent : celle de la technologie et celle de la magie. Pendant une vague magique, les mages sauvages lancent leurs sorts et des monstres apparaissent, les armes à feu refusent de fonctionner et les voitures ne démarrent plus. Puis la vague se retire aussi vite qu’elle est venue en laissant derrière elle toutes sortes de problèmes paranormaux. Nous vivons une époque dangereuse. Mais dans le cas contraire, je serais au chômage. Quand les gens ont des ennuis qui relèvent de l’occulte et que la police ne veut ou ne peut pas régler, on fait appel aux mercenaires de la magie comme moi. Mais quand un nécromancien anéantit la seule famille qui me reste, je n’attends plus les ordres et je dégaine mon sabre.

Avis : Le monde tel qu’on le connait n’est plus… La magie règne en maître et déferle, par vagues successibles, annulant la technologie et autres outils que l’homme a créés. Il faut s’adapter, retrouver ses repères et tenter de survivre dans ce nouvel univers.

Etant donné que magie est partout, certaines institutions sont nécessaires pour maintenir l’ordre fragile de cette balance en équilibre, la Meute en est une, la Guilde en est une autre. Et Kate Daniels se retrouve au milieu.

Kate est une Merc, une Mercenaire qui offre ses services pour résoudre les problèmes que la police ne peut pas gérer. La magie, elle connait, elle vit en elle. Cette dure à cuire, un peu tête brûlée, essaie de se fondre dans la masse d’Atlanta, de faire son travail sans trop attirer l’attention. Mais difficile de ne pas attirer l’attention quand on est ce qu’elle est, et surtout quand son mentor est assassiné.

Cela fait très longtemps que j’entends parler de Kate Daniels, mais jamais encore elle n’avait  croisé ma route. Melliane avait pourtant beaucoup insisté, mais je ne sais pas pourquoi, j’avais fait de la résistance. Je me demande si ce n’est pas à cause des couvertures initiales qui ne mettaient pas forcément en valeur la série. Mxm l’a rachetée et l’occasion s’est enfin présentée.

Premier constat, la couverture est beaucoup plus alléchante et comme je suis une fille superficielle, j’ai tout de suite été séduite.

Deuxième constat : « Houston, nous avons un problème, un big problème, plus haut que l’Everest », me voilà accro et juste après un volume.

Je sais, je suis faible…

Mais à ma décharge, Kate Daniels a tout ce qu’il faut pour me plaire : un univers original, une héroïne forte en gueule, un héros de qui, je le sens, je vais tomber amoureuse, une intrigue riche, pleine d’action et de rebondissements.

Parce que, voyez-vous, je suis une lectrice qui a besoin d’être embarquée pour pouvoir glousser tranquillement dans son coin, une lectrice assez exigeante d’ailleurs sur le décor de l’intrigue au risque de passer à côté. Et là, la lectrice que je suis a été tellement embarquée qu’elle n’a pas lâché ce tome 1, même pour aller aux toilettes… Et la lectrice que je suis, a beaucoup gloussé aussi devant certaines réparties et a même soupiré à chaque apparition de Curran (il est prometteur celui-là ! -sourire rêveur sur mon visage-).

Non, non, on ne rit pas.

Non, je ne suis pas faible (Le premier qui dit que je me contredis, je lui tire la langue. Le Chat du Cheshire, je t’ai vue !)

Et non, je ne me suis pas trémoussée pendant ma lecture. Enfin, juste un petit peu. Quand Doux Chéri était en train de travailler consciencieusement à son ordinateur et qu’il ne pouvait pas me voir. J’ai ma fierté et ma dignité à préserver. Quand même.

Gloussomètre et soupiromètre se sont enclenchés (ainsi que trémoussomètre, mais bon, vous le gardez pour vous, hein…) et nous en arrivons à mon troisième constat : toujours faire confiance à Melliane quand elle me dit qu’une série est top !

She has a sizable bounty on her head, so if you hear kinetic or laser fire, try not to stand close to the target. Our chef is a Quillonian. The claws are a little unsettling, but he is a consummate professional and truly is the best chef in the Galaxy. If you see a dark shadow in the orchard late at night, don’t worry. Someone is patrolling the grounds. Do beware of our dog.

Your safety and comfort is our first priority. The inn and your host, Dina Demille, will defend you at all costs. We ask only that you mind other guests and conduct yourself in a polite manner.

Review: How to resist a new Ilona Andrews novel? Is that even possible? So I threw myself full of impatience into this new story.

We find Dina facing a new problem that deserves her immediate attention. Indeed her sister managed to send her a message of distress asking for help. Armed with her allies, our host does not hesitate to embark on a mission to rescue her sister and niece whom she has not seen for years. Meanwhile, an endangered species asks for asylum in Dina’s inn but accepting them would also bring a lot of problems. Indeed, these beings are driven out by others who believe that killing them will allow them to reach paradise. And they are willing to do anything to achieve their goals. But then, helping them find a place where they can repopulate can also allow Dina to have new clues regarding the disappearance of her parents.

Reuniting with her sister and niece for her delight and allying herself with other characters, Dina has a lot of things to manage, if only because of the relentless attacks on Gertrude Hunt, her house, But she’ll also have to decide what she wants to do with Sean. Yes it was a very good novel once again and it allows us to learn a little more about the universe of the authors. It’s always a treat to follow Dina and see all the characters we love. I was also touched by certain passages that I will let you discover for yourself!

It was again a very nice surprise anyway and I recommend the series if you want something different that takes you into an amazing world!

Avis : Comment résister à un nouveau Ilona Andrews ? Est-ce que c’est même réellement possible ? Je me suis donc lancée pleine d’impatience dans cette nouvelle histoire.

Nous retrouvons ainsi Dina en proie à un nouveau problème qui mérite son attention immédiate. En effet sa sœur parvient à lui faire passer un message de détresse demandant de l’aide. Armée de ses alliés, notre hôte n’hésite pas à se lancer dans une mission pour secourir sa sœur et sa nièce qu’elle n’a pas vues depuis des années. Mêlée à cela, une race en voie de disparition demande asile dans de B&B de Dina Mais voilà les accueillir amène aussi énormément de problèmes. En effet, ces êtres sont chassés par d’autres qui croient que les tuer leur permettra d’accéder au paradis. Et ils sont prêts à tout pour atteindre leurs objectifs. Mais voilà, les aider à trouver un endroit où ils puissent se repeupler peut aussi permettre à Dina d’avoir de nouveaux indices par rapport à la disparition de ses parents.

Refaisant connaissance avec sa sœur et sa nièce pour son plus grand plaisir et s’alliant avec d’autres personnages, Dina voir avoir énormément de choses à régler, ne serait-ce qu’à cause des les attaques incessante contre Gertrude Hunt, sa maison, mais elle va aussi devoir décider ce qu’elle veut faire avec Sean. Oui c’était un très bon volet une fois de plus qui nous permet d’en apprendre toujours un peu plus sur l’univers d’Ilona Andrews. C’est toujours un régal de suivre Dina et de revoir tous les personnages que l’on aime. J’ai d’ailleurs été touchée aussi par certains passages que je vous laisserai découvrir par vous-même !

C’était encore une fois une très belle surprise en tout cas et je vous conseille la série si vous avez envie de quelque chose de différent qui vous entraine dans un monde étonnant !

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

Review: How not to succumb to a new novel by Ilona Andrews? I think we all wait with great anticipation each book and it was a pleasure to immerse myself in the world of Kate Daniels! All the characters we love are of course also here!

Kate and Curran have finally decided to formalize their relationship and to get married. But now, their marriage also announces big changes and the oracles predict the destruction of Atlanta and the love ones of our heroine. Our heroes will then have to decide how they wish to act in particular when it comes to Roland. In fact, a multitude of events follows one after the other and Kate must thus manage her marriage, the war looming but also her power she does not master. No, Kate did not expect that her wedding preparations would take so much of her time and even if someone does it for her, she is obliged to be present for the details. It’s pretty funny it must be said to see them handle all this then that is the last thing they want to do. As I said, Kate must also manage her new responsibilities, including her new powers and her taste for ever more. It’s really not easy to assist to these events, especially when we see that she goes deep down. And then we have Roland … It’s always very difficult to state about him. It is definitely crazy and horrible at the same time to see his relationship with Kate as it is quite complicated to define. Yet, choices will have to be made and we see with our characters the preparation of a confrontation.

I can also tell you that we learn much more about Kate and her family and I loved knowing all these revelations and explanations. Besides, as always, Ilona Andrews carried me with the story and I was struggling to put the the novel down before finishing it. It was once again a compelling and fantastic story that I enjoyed reading it and can not wait to read more!
