Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson

Synopsis: Kate Worthington knows her heart and she knows she will never marry. Her plan is to travel to India instead—if only to find peace for her restless spirit and to escape the family she abhors. But Kate’s meddlesome mother has other plans. She makes a bargain with Kate: India, yes, but only after Kate has secured—and rejected—three marriage proposals.

Kate journeys to the stately manor of Blackmoore determined to fulfill her end of the bargain and enlists the help of her dearest childhood friend, Henry Delafield. But when it comes to matters of love, bargains are meaningless and plans are changeable. There on the wild lands of Blackmoore, Kate must face the truth that has kept her heart captive. Will the proposal she is determined to reject actually be the one thing that will set her heart free?

Review: There are different types of historical romances: those that bring new ideas and take us away with their originality and those that follow a pattern that has been seen several times and, even if we spend a good time with them, it’s nothing more. You are probably wondering in which category Blackmoore ends up? Well I’ll tell you right now, although the theme is already included in many stories, the author has managed to bring her personal touch that can carry us through the chapters.

We discover Kate, a young girl living in a difficult environment with a family that is not necessarily very healthy. Her mother only thinks about marrying her while courting everywhere, as well as her sisters. It is not something simple to grow up in an environment without love, seeing her parents indifferent to each other and the manipulation of each for an opulent future. But Kate is not like that and she hates all these machinations… Her dream is something simple: to never marry and to go to India with her aunt to finally be released from her gilded cage. Yet this seems almost impossible. In addition, this year she finally has the chance to accompany her childhood friends Sylvia and Henry to Blackmoore, it remains her dream to visit it since childhood. Yet, these dreams are within reach but her mother agrees only for a very delicate condition. Kate must receive three marriage proposals during this stay and refuse them, to be able to go in India, otherwise she will have to submit to her mother without questions and accept her fate without objections.

Thus we follow Kate Blackmoore in her little quest, something that is not simple, especially given her very strong feelings for Henry. But he, himself, is linked to a beautiful young woman since childhood and nothing can therefore be possible between them. Yet something very strong binds them both together and it’s very hard to see that their relationship seems impossible to evolve. While Kate is changing in this house, trying to find all the hiding places, she’ll make a pact with the young man who could burn her wings. This is also where she will understand that her gilded cage will be very hard to break and it may well wither and capitulate to her mother.

We also discover in the story what Kate has endured since childhood and we can only admire her strength and to be sad to see all that she had to face to become the person she is now. But also all her hopes buried in herself, thinking that she couldn’t achieve them one day. The novel is not necessarily as easy if we consider some parts of the story and I admit that I cried several times. Okay, maybe it was the fatigue because I could not put the book down until finishing it and it was already very late. But it is true that Kate’s story really touched me and I could not hold my tears because of what she suffered.

So yes, I had a great time with this story and it’s been awhile since I had not been so carried away by a historical romance. I did not know the author, but I really want to find out more about her now. A very good book to discover.

In the Spinster’s Bed by Sally MacKenzie

Spinster House, Book 0.5

Synopsis: At Spinster House, a woman can enjoy the spoils of single life—or find the love of a lifetime…

It has been twenty years since Lord William Wattles laid eyes on Annabelle Frost. Still, he remembers everything—her ethereal beauty, her bookish intelligence, her surprisingly modern attitudes about love…and lust. But Belle’s allegedly wanton behavior led her father to send her away to save the family’s reputation. Now she resides at Spinster House in the village of Loves Bridge, where an unmarried lady can live—and in Belle’s case, support herself as a librarian—in peace…

Beautiful, passionate Belle—sworn off marriage? William can’t believe the woman he once knew could end up like this. But when the hands of fate bring him to Loves Bridge, his long-lost love might just end up back in his arms. Is their unwavering desire worth the sweeping scandal that is sure to follow them both? Absolutely.

Review: I looked forward to this new Sally MacKenzie’s series. Indeed, I always have a great time with all her stories and I was curious to see what she would present us this time. This new addition allows us to have a glimpse of what awaits us in the future for this series.

We discover Belle, a young woman who was able to rebuild her life after being thrown into the street by her father when she was younger. With luck, she managed to find a job enabling her to continue her life as a single person without being dishonored in any way whatsoever. Thus she becomes the new librarian in Loves Bridge, as soon as she keeps her spinsterhood label. And, to leave her past completely behind her, the young woman even decides to change her name. Yet, her life will change completely when an old acquaintance comes to town, a man for whom her heart beat and for whom he it always beats. Unfortunately the latter is married, what can happen then?

I enjoyed discovering this introduction even if finally everything happens too fast and I struggled to hang on everything. The romance between the two is very fast too and it is true that they are not very careful about what others think of them. But really, I think the only problem is the speed of the narrative, as it fails to really embrace this resurgent relationship. But overall it’s still a nice story to follow and I admit that I am curious to read the first novel now.

In the Spinster’s Bed de Sally MacKenzie (VO)

Spinster House, Tome 0.5

Old Friends and New Fancies by Sybil G. Brinton

Synopsis: The first Jane Austen sequel ever written!

Originally published in 1914, this charming and original sequel to the novels of Jane Austen intertwines the lives of the most beloved characters from all six Austen novels with new characters of the author’s devising. Inventive matchmaking leads numerous pairs of lovers through the inevitable (and entertaining) difficulties they must encounter before they are united in the end.

Old Friends and New Fancies is a gratifying read for any Jane Austen enthusiast.

Review: When I saw the release of this book, I admit that I was very curious. I’m a fan of everything related to Pride and Prejudice and now that I’ve read Emma, I was intrigued by the fact that we find some of the characters from this story as well as others. However, I think that the fact of not having read more novels by Jane Austen removed a little appeal to the history as I could not really locate anyone in the story.

Even if we meet many people, it is true that in the end we mainly follow the heroes of Pride and Prejudice. So we meet Elizabeth at the beginning of the story who is trying to manage the future marriage of Georgiana who does not seem very happy about it in fact. All this happens several years after the end of the book, where our heroes already have children and are happy in marriage. Thus we follow the trials and tribulations of each, their meetings and their love. It’s pretty funny because the characters really keep the same spirit as those we know about, especially Emma who is always trying to assemble couples and is always mistaking about that.

As I said I had a good time with the story and it was interesting to find all these characters but it’s true that some passages may be a bit long for me. I think I would have had more fun if I had a little more understood who all the characters were exactly too. In any case it was nice to be immersed in the world and to find the first sequel of the famous novel.

Emma by Jane Austen

Synopsis: ‘I never have been in love; it is not my way, or my nature; and I do not think I ever shall.’

Beautiful, clever, rich – and single – Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen’s most flawless work.

Review: I’ve always been attracted to Jane Austen’s novels but I hadn’t read one. I loved the movie adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and I’ve read many novels derived from the story with great pleasure. Yes I can say that it’s an universe that I like. I actually have Pride and Prejudice for years without ultimately having reading it yet. But I know I have to do it !!!! I’ll do it! When I saw the new re-release of Emma, I was immediately attracted. I do not really know about her other novels and I was curious to find out what the author would present us then. And I can tell you that even with some few lengths, I had a great time with this story and I am now even more curious to read her other books.

Emma is a young woman who believes that she will end up alone and independent with enough money from her family to do what she desires. Moreover, it must be said that love does not interest her particularly if it does not concern others. Oh yes, because the girl is determined to mingle with the stories of each to try to create possibly couples and weddings. She develops plans to put her objectives to the test and thus bring two people together. Unfortunately, despite her good intentions, the young woman is not so good and is easily mistaken without realizing it. And even if we understand ourselves soon enough the truth, it’s pretty funny to see how events evolve. But as she does so, she does not realize that she could meet her own half and could well be closer to this person than she thought.

I loved Emma, even if it is true that after seeing that her indiscretions were hurting those around her, she did not abandon her quest. She remains determined at any time and does her best to achieve what she wants to see. It was interesting to see that everyone liked her and that with surprise her father did not particularly pushed her to marry someone. Besides, I’m sure that he would have preferred her to stay with him forever. Then, we discover many characters that we begin to appreciate while following Emma. We have thus Ms. Weston, her former nurse, or Mr Knightley, an old friend of the family who does not hesitate to hold forth with her or even Miss Smith who becomes a dear friend and a confidante. Yes, many of the characters are fun to explore and to see evolve.
