The Alchemical Detective by Kirsten Weiss

Riga Hayworth, Book 2

Synopsis: A psychic has been murdered in an occult ceremony and the police pay a visit to Riga Hayworth, metaphysical detective. But this time, she’s not a consultant on the case, she’s a suspect.

There’s a storm on the horizon. Riga’s lost her magic and has come to Lake Tahoe to recover and spend quality time with her new love. But life for Riga is never that simple. A psychic’s been murdered, and the police believe Riga has a connection to the crime. They’re right. And if that’s not enough, Riga is drafted as the host of a reality TV show about the local lake monster, and her niece is rejecting her metaphysical abilities. Juggling demons, daimons, and angry tarot card readers, Riga must catch a killer before she becomes the next target.

Review:  After some problems with the first volume, I wanted to discover this second one. Indeed even if I have observed some deficiencies in the writing style I really liked the concept of the story. The writing of the author has dramatically changed in this new novel, it’s more accomplished, more controlled in the plot, which is more pleasant to read. There is a clear progression and I hope it’ll continue like that.

Riga is now in a relationship with Donovan and she will have to face all the consequences of that. In addition, Pen is spending her time with them since she tries to do everything to forget her skills. To help, she will work with a movie team to follow Riga while she seeks more information about Tessie the lake monster that many persons seem to have seen, but without any proof. Of course there is more, some people involved in paranormal activity are killed. But while our heroine is involved in this story, nothing goes as planned, and the police suspects her more and more.

I admit I didn’t expect the culprit of the story, it was well found, it is true, and I was very surprised at the end when we learn the reasons. The character I prefer here is always Donovan and I’m very curious to learn more about him. However, It’s really hard for me to put myself in the place of Riga or to be interested in her more than in Donovan. It is however interesting to follow her and see what she is willing to do for others, especially for the truth. Some parts of the novel are a bit too long for me and it was difficult to stay focused but the story is developed throughout the book and I liked to learn more about everyone. The plot thickens more and more and each new event is like a new piece to the puzzle.

As I said at the beginning, this novel shows a great improvement and I’m curious to see what will happen next with the third.
