Kell est le dernier des Visiteurs, des magiciens capables de voyager d’un monde à l’autre. Des mondes, il y en a quatre, dont Londres est le centre à chaque fois. Le nôtre est gris, sans magie d’aucune sorte. Celui de Kell, rouge, et on y respire le merveilleux avec chaque bouffée d’air. C’est pourtant ce que va faire Kell, un chien fou tout juste sorti de l’adolescence, pour défier la famille royale qui l’a pourtant adopté comme son fils, et le prince Rhy, son frère, pour qui il donnerait pourtant sa vie sans hésiter. Et un jour, il commet l’irréparable : il passe une pierre noire comme la nuit dans le Londres gris où une jeune fille du nom de Lila la lui subtilise.
