Synopsis: Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon’s last day in L.A. together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

Review: As always, I was really looking forward to a new novel by Colleen Hoover. I am delighted to see each time her novels translated into French!

Fallon is a girl who has been marked by life. At the age of 16, a fire was almost fatal to her and she now bears the scars. These scars have also made her lose her role in a rising series and made her lose all confidence in her. She hides them, she hates them, she is ashamed of them. But now, two years after the tragedy, she decides to embark on a new life, to finally have a new beginning by moving to New York, far from this story. When she talks about it that day at the restaurant with her father, she does not expect a boy to come to help her, a stranger takes her defense in front of this father who does not seem to approve. Finally and while she did not expect it, Fallon will spend her last day with Ben, a very enjoyable day, an unforgettable moment. But according to the girl’s mother, no love story should begin before her twenty-three years and Fallon is determined to follow this rule. Refusing any contact with Ben, they agree however to meet each year for 5 years, this one day, to exchange more about their lives. Ben being a writer, she asks him to write their story, and each year, by learning more, he can complete this story.

It was very touching to see them come together year after year and yet nothing will be easy. Everyone tries to do the best for the other even if some choices are painful. We look forward to every next November 9 to find out what happened to the two characters. It’s true that in a year, so much can happen and one day is still very short. We will discover the sorrows, the hope, the good moments but also their impatient waiting to arrive finally to this day. It was a catchy story, we connect easily to Ben and Fallon, to the disappointments of their lives. And I admit that I did not expect at all such an end. I finished the story with tears in my eyes, revelations that finally allow us to answer the different questions we ask ourselves in the course of the story.

Once again, it was a nice read!

I haven’t read a CoHo book since Confess. This definitely seems like something I’ll enjoy though, because I’m into emotional stories. Nice review. Glad you liked the story!
