The Iron Covenant, Book 1
Synopsis: No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.
Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.
Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she’s trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify.
Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?
As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn.”
Hugh and Elara may do both.
Review: How to resist this new novel by Ilona Andrews? It is not possible. And when it comes to Hugh? It’s even less possible! So I was more than impatient to immerse myself in this story.
It took a little time for me to get into the story I must admit, but once in it, I could not let go before finishing it and I was curious to see what the authors were going to propose us.
We discover a strange alliance between two people who hate each other but who, to help theirs, will do everything, even to marry together. These two beings who can not stand the other, will indeed have to join forces to advance and protect their people.
It was very funny to see them both interact and exchange, while playing a role in front of strangers. Hugh will change with Elara and become a little different from what he was. I was also delighted to see Ascenio appear, but also Andrea and Raphael and even Roland. It’s always a pleasure to see them. And if we do not see Kate and Curran here, we hear about them several times.
It was a very nice spin off to discover and I always look forward to new novels from both authors!

I don’t know that I want to like Hugh. I just finished relistening to Magic Breaks where he locks Kate in the cage. I don’t think I can forgive him for what he did (and what he ordered in the previous book).

I confess that I don’t have a good memory so I easily forgot what hapenned
Sophia Rose
I do like to see they have a connection since they are both bad types. Can’t wait to read it.

I can’t wait to read this one, so glad it was good, but I didn’t have my doubts that it would be.
Melliane
I hope you’ll like it
Northwoman
This was so good. I hated HUGH in Magic Breaks. And now things have changed. It’s more like I hate Roland. It was fascinating to see Hugh and Elara and what motivated them. Anne – Books of My Heart

This is a new series right? I was a little confused, since some chronologies place it with Kate Daniels. But regardless, I’m glad you had a fun time with this book!
Melliane

I loved Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy series! Have you read it? I still need to read the others. She co-writes with her husband, right? Sorry it took a bit to get in to this one, but I’m glad you were able to enjoy it!
