Alex Verus, Book 4

Synopsis: I don’t publicly advertise that I’m a mage, but I don’t exactly hide it either, and one of the odd things I’ve learnt over the years is just how much you can get away with if you’re blatant enough. Hide something behind smoke and mirrors and make people work to find it, and they’ll tear the place down looking for what’s there.

Alex Verus is a diviner who can see probable futures—a talent that’s gotten him out of many a tough scrape. But this time, he may be in over his head. Alex was once apprenticed to a Dark mage, and in his service he did a lot of things he isn’t proud of.

As rumors swirl that his old master is coming back, Alex comes face to face with his misdeeds in the form of a young adept whose only goal is to get revenge. Alex has changed his life for the better, but he’s afraid of what his friends—including his apprentice, Luna—will think of his past. But if they’re going to put themselves at risk, they need to know exactly what kind of man they’re fighting for…

Review: I always have a great time with the novels in this series and I was looking forward to immersing myself in this fourth volume! How not to be when you know we’ll find out a little more about Alex’s past?

Alex is caught up in his past when a group of young people is determined to kill him for something that happened more than 10 years ago. Our hero will do anything to get them to give up, but Will, their boss doesn’t care, and his ultimate goal is to kill Alex! This is how we find ourselves embarked on the past of our character, discovering what he suffered at Richards’ hands and his escape. We also find of course all the characters from the previous volumes, whether it is Deleo, Cendre, but especially Anne, Variam and Luna whom I love!

Like I said, I had a great time again! The books are getting more and more interesting and I was eager to find out what was going to happen. If I am sad about some of the characters’ decisions, I am curious to see what happens next. Alex will have to face a lot of dangers in this novel and unfortunately, to keep his friends safe, he will have to make his own choices.

A lot of things are coming up and I’m really looking forward to discovering all this! I strongly recommend getting started if you don’t know it!

That is indeed great how you got a story that ties to his past and you got to see what his friends think of this reveal. Glad to get your take on this series.

Nice! I like how he has to deal with things he’s done in the past, that’s always fun when characters have to come to grips like that.

I have never heard of this series before, but I do think it sounds good. I loved the first line of the blurb And that four books in you’re dying to know more about the character’s past really does speak to how gripping the series is.

    Great review!
