The Chronicles of Alice, Book 1

Synopsis: In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo the screams of the poor souls inside.

In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood…

Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago.

Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful.

And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.

Review: I am always intrigued by retellings and Alice in Wonderland presents many possibilities.

We discover Alice who has been back for several years from Wonderland. But her parents have locked her up in an asylum. So when she meets Hatcher there, who also claims to have returned from the place everyone thinks is impossible, she figures she might not be crazy. The two of them will team up and return to this different world to discover the truth about their past. It won’t be easy for either of them.

I didn’t get hooked on this novel as much as I would have liked, but I enjoyed discovering this story and the touches the author brought to it. Alice and Hatcher are two mysterious characters trying to figure out who they were so they can figure out who they have become.

I don’t know if I will ever read the sequel to this rather dark retelling.

I liked this ok but it was a bit close to horror for me.

The concept sounds intriguing and Anne saying it was more horror even more.

This was my favorite book of hers! But then that’s probably because I love fairy tale inspired horror.
