Burning Down the Spouse by Dakota Cassidy

Ex Trophy Wives, Book 2

Synopsis: If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen…the latest from national bestselling author Dakota Cassidy!

After discovering that her famous chef husband was cheating, Frankie Bennett lost her mind-on live TV. Now Frankie is broke, unemployed, and hiding out in her aunt’s retirement village. That is, until Maxine Henderson-Barker-reformed trophy wife and owner of Trophy Jobs Inc. employment agency-arrives to give Frankie a much needed kick in the pants.

Soon, Frankie lands a job as a prep chef at a Greek diner in New Jersey, home to the world’s best meatloaf and an owner who resembles an exquisitely chiseled Greek statue. Falling into bed with Nikos isn’t the best idea, but after years of living in a man’s shadow, this ex- trophy wife is ready to get busy cooking…

Review: I was curious about this second volume as the first one was a nice surprise. The two books are lively and fun to read, all that with a wonderful humor.

Frankie is a young woman with a fiery temperament, so when she learns that her husband, master chef, cheats on her, she causes a scandal on live TV by threatening him. But she did not expect it to have a heavy public impact with this event. Indeed, now everyone knows who she is as soon as she appears somewhere. But with her aunt Gail, Mona’s friend, Maxine comes into play to help our young heroine. I was really happy to see how Maxine was established as a fulfilled woman and is now helping all women who had gone through the same obstacles. But she still knows where she comes from and do everything possible to help these ex-wives to recover her lives. And despite a difficult start, Frankie is now working in a restaurant, thanks to Maxine, under the orders of the beautiful and charming Nikos. This man has everything, and we can only understand the attraction of our heroine. Yes, because I also completely fell under his spell too. But jealousy is also his weak point and he will have to overcome that to continue his life. But everything would have been fine, if Mitch, the ex-husband, had not realized that without his wife, his show would go down the drain…

I loved this story and I was quite curious to see what would happen. I must say that Frankie is a stubborn woman but she is also afraid of being hurt again, especially since everyone constantly reminds her of her husband’s adultery. Also it is very difficult for her to turn the corner, but with the help of Nikos, Maxine and her friend Jasmine, everything is possible. I was also surprised to also follow in this novel the story of Jasmine, a woman who has also been left by her husband and despite her independent air and her strength, she is more sensitive than anyone would have believed. Simon and Nikos are two extraordinary men, although they also make many mistakes while trying not to hurt the person they love. Because, yes, hiding the truth is never the best thing to do.

It was certainly a very good second volume and I can not wait to see what will be in the third and if we’ll still have the opportunity to see our three couples and especially the history of our next heroes.

Avis :  Et voilà mon premier Milady Romance!

You Dropped a Blonde on Me by Dakota Cassidy

Ex Trophy Wives, Book 1

Synopsis: She was the perfect party-planning, haute-to-the max trophy wife. Now Maxine Cambridge is broke, unemployable and living with her mother and teenage son in a retirement village, with her self-esteem kicked to the curb.

Until her geeky former classmate Campbell Barker returns, all grown-up- and off-the-scale smokin’ hot. Campbell refuses to believe Max isn’t that smart, funny girl he’s crushed on since high school. The more Max tries to show him he’s wrong, the more she rediscovers her long-retired mojo. Now, she’s ready to throw down some payback on her ex-life and fight for what she deserves…

Review: I’m a big fan of chick-lit books and this one seemed perfect for me, I was therefore very happy to be able to discover more about this novel by Dakota Cassidy. I read several of her books with her paranormal series: Friends accidentaly but not something like this one. The book is quite thick but we can easily read it. Indeed, I let myself carried away by the story we have here.

So we discover Maxine Cambridge, a young woman going through a divorce and who finds herself overnight on the street with her son Connor. But despite her 40 years old, she is determined to find a solution, even if she lives with her mother in her retirement community, she is determined to get out and find a job! Problem? It’s just a lot more complicated than expected to get hired for anything when you do not have any degrees and when you compete with the 18 years old persons. And when she meets Campbell Barker, a man she has not seen since high school, she understands that some of them have changed since adolescence. Even if she is really depressed, Campbell is one of the sexiest men she has ever seen in a long time. Well, he has everything for himself, he is nice, friendly, charming and ready to help all our young heroine. It is however harder for Max as since the deception of her husband, it’s hard for her to trust anyone, and, starting with herself. She is therefore determined to not engage herself in any relationship, a fact that is far from the view of Campbell. In addition to that, the world in which she has evolved so far, gave her a poor image of herself and it will take some time and a lot of reconsiderations before she realize it’s not the truth.

I enjoyed Maxine she is a determined young woman but she came through a lot with her ex-husband and her divorce. It’s funny to see her mood swings, she is very focused when it’s about her work or her son, but for the rest it is very different. Fortunately, Campbell will be there to try to restore her confidence and rebuild her. It is, however, something more complicated than expected, especially when Max does everything to ruin their relationship each time it progresses a little bit. I was really impressed by the assurance and self-control of Campbell. I must say that Max is very annoying sometimes and I do not know if I could have taken as much as he did. Because even if we know that our heroine has a terrible period, it’s sometimes too much and she doesn’t think of the consequences of her actions and words. Our little couple, however, is very cute to follow and we wish them a lot of happiness together throughout the story. There is of course much more here, as Max’s best friend, or even her mother Mona who is really nice and always here for her daughter. But I’ll let you discover all that.

I would say that I was pleasantly surprised by this novel and I was completely carried away by the story and adventures of  Maxine who surprises us that throughout the novel. This is a beautiful romance with an undeniable humor.

Tempting is Hell – Cathy Yardley

When the temp agency sent free spirit Kate O’Hara to Fiendish Enterprises, a ginormous, soul-sucking conglomerate, she didn’t realize just how appropriate the term soul-sucking would be. On the plus side, she does get to meet the sexy, devil-may-care playboy CEO, Thomas Kestrel. She’s just not sure if he’s a good guy or a bad guy or just a hot guy.
Thomas Kestrel has a problem. Nine years ago, he signed over his soul to save the woman he loved…only to realize he’d been set up. Now, to save himself from damnation, he must find and kill the thirteen key signatories who signed their souls over to the same man he did. Which would be a lot easier if the cute redhead he has nothing in common with wasn’t distributing Ho-Ho’s to the demons wading through soul contracts, creating a riot with talk of labor codes and unionization. He’d fire her if not for the fact that Kate’s irresistibly attractive—or that she’s created a program that makes finding signatories easier.
In fact, it’s so successful, she’s already found one.
