Review: I already read a few adventures of Sarah Dearly through the first saga of Michelle Rowen, but I was quite surprised to find that the author had started another series featuring Thierry. I think this one could perfectly continue the Immortality Bites one. This is what surprised me, I did not really expect to have a real continuity in the story but it is still nice to see how our characters have evolved. I think the first series allowed us to really get to know each of the protagonists, but this time it focuses on our heroine and Thierry. Of course, there were some appearances of other characters we met earlier as Sarah’s best friend, Amy, by phone, which is pretty funny.

  

Thierry is hired by the Ring as a consultant, an offer he can’t refuse. And whether Sarah likes it or not, what is done is done. Being her fiancé, there is no question that she let him go alone. Although he hides many secrets, she is determined to understand what is happening. When in Las Vegas, she accompanies his lover in his investigations, including the one about a vampire child doing beauty pageants. I really liked Victoria. Unlike other authors, vampire children, here, keep their inner child and although she is a little tired of her life, Victoria is like any other little girls. I think it was a good idea, and it allows us to get easily attached to this little vampire. In parallel, many problems arise, like a strange story between Thierry and an old friend, or even a wave of murders committed by a vampire that nobody knows about.
 
I enjoyed the story and the plot, Sarah has not changed and is as always a big magnet to problems in all circumstances. She kept her fun attitude and would do anything to help Thierry. Well I must say that when she decides to help, nothing ever goes as planned and all this, often ends in disaster. It’s pretty cute to see how her fiancé loves her, being cold, he completely changes when he is close to her. I also enjoyed all the little memories that we have in the story; we can better understand how our couple is now.
 
Regarding the plot, I admit that I was really curious to find out who was behind the murders. I went through the same assumptions as Sarah, concluding with her, but I really didn’t expect this culprit. Not at all, and I was also stunned when I learned the identity.

Se rendant à Las Vegas pour sa première affectation, ils rencontrent une participante, enfant très mignonne, de concours de beauté, ainsi qu’un tueur vampire en série laissant derrière lui les victimes vidées de leur sang, exposant potentiellement l’existence des vampires dans le monde entier. Mais quand une ancienne histoire de Thierry revient le hanter, et qu’il est accusé d’un crime qu’il n’a pas commis, Sarah se doit laver son nom avant que leur vie d’immortels n’arrive à sa fin.

Avis : J’avais déjà lu quelques aventures de Sarah Dearly grâce à la première saga de Michelle Rowen, mais j’ai été assez surprise de constater que l’auteure avait recommencé une autre série la mettant en scène avec Thierry. Je pense que ça aurait pu parfaitement être la suite de ces romans. C’est d’ailleurs ce qui m’a surprise, je ne m’attendais pas vraiment à avoir une vraie continuité dans l’histoire mais c’est tout de même bien agréable de voir comment nos personnages ont évolué. Je pense que la première série nous permettait de vraiment apprendre à connaître chacun des protagonistes, mais celle-ci se concentre vraiment sur notre héroïne et Thierry. Bien sûr, on a l’apparition d’autres personnages que l’on a rencontrés auparavant comme Amy, la meilleure amie de Sarah, par téléphone, ce qui est assez drôle.

Thierry est engagé par l’Anneau en tant que consultant, une offre qu’il ne pouvait pas refuser. Et que ce soit du goût de Sarah ou pas, ce qui est fait est fait. Fiancée, il n’est aucunement question qu’elle le laisse partir tout seul, et bien qu’il lui cache de nombreux secrets, elle est déterminée à comprendre ce qu’il se passe. Arrivée à Las Vegas, elle va accompagner son compagnon dans ses investigations, notamment celle d’une enfant vampire faisant des concours de beauté. J’ai eu un gros coup de cœur pour Victoria. A l’inverse d’autres auteurs, les enfants vampires ici gardent leur âme d’enfance et même si elle est un peu blasée par la vie, Victoria a tout d’une petite fille comme les autres. J’ai trouvé que c’était une bonne idée, et cela nous permet de nous attacher très facilement à cette petite vampire. En parallèle, de nombreux problèmes apparaissent, que ce soit une histoire louche entre Thierry et un ancien ami à lui ou encore une vague de meurtres perpétrés par un vampire et dont personne ne sait qui est le responsable.
J’ai beaucoup apprécié l’histoire et l’intrigue, Sarah n’a pas changé et est comme toujours un gros aimant à problèmes en toutes circonstances. Elle a gardé sa fraicheur des tomes où on a pu la découvrir et ferait tout pour aider Thierry. Bon il faut dire que quand elle décide d’aider, rien ne se passe jamais comme prévu et tout cela finit souvent en catastrophe. C’est assez mignon de voir l’amour que lui porte son fiancé, bien que froid, il change du tout au tout quand il est proche d’elle. J’ai aussi beaucoup apprécié tous les petits souvenirs que l’on nous fait revivre au cours de l’histoire, nous permettant de mieux comprendre, comment notre couple en est arrivé là.
Pour ce qui est de l’intrigue, j’avoue que j’étais vraiment curieuse de découvrir qui était vraiment derrière les meurtres. Je suis passée par les mêmes hypothèses que Sarah, concluant avec elle de ses suppositions, mais je n’ai vraiment pas vu venir ce coupable. Mais alors pas du tout, et j’ai été aussi hébétée qu’elle, quand on apprend son identité.
Ce roman était donc un nouveau très bon commencement, bien que je pense qu’il est plus judicieux de lire la première série (ou au moins les deux premiers tomes) pour comprendre l’histoire de Sarah. J’avoue que je n’ai pas encore lu les deux derniers tomes que j’ai à la maison, mais cela ne m’a posé aucun problème. Il faut dire qu’une fois qu’on connait notre héroïne, on sait tout ce qu’il y a à savoir. Je suivrai avec plaisir la suite !

Unfortunately, the serum has also made her blood irresistible to all vampires-including Declan, whose desire for Jillian is more than mere hunger.


Our Review: I knew Michelle Rowen by her Sarah Dearly series but it is true that this novel is completely different from what I’ve read before. We need to not expect something turned to the the chick-lit genre but more turned to the urban fantasy one. And what a pleasure, the author knows how to play with both kinds without any problem.

Jillian is a young woman who has never asked something to anyone but her life is turned upside down in two seconds …. The time that a scientific needs to held her in hostage and to inject her a product that seems to interest a lot of people but that especially makes her very ill. She is immediately taken in a world where vampires are common and where she could have a prominent place now. Taken to a secret location, kidnapped by a cold-blooded killer named Declan, she had to face a whole new perspective. But it all starts now, and there is no turning back. It could be possible that the product she has in her body, has turned her forever.

I really enjoyed this novel, it was a real surprise. Jillian is a young woman we learn to know throughout the volume, and even if she is terrified of everything that happens, she remains courageous in all circumstances. She made me smile a lot at the beginning of the novel as she wanted many answers and only asked questions throughout her journey. I could quite put myself in her place and see me doing the same things. This is the kind of things I could do without a problem. I was also very impressed by the self-control of Declan in these moments. Yes because he needed it! But whatever happens, even if we kidnaps her, scare her, mistreat her, our young heroine always tries to find a solution to get out. Declan is also a character that I was immediately intrigued with. We try to find out what he is and how he can endure this lonely life. I didn’t like him at first, even hate him but our heart softens when we understand who he really is and why he is like that.

It was a very good novel, and I’m pretty sad that there are only two of them. However, I am curious to read more now to see what happens to our heroes because I feel it will really not be easy for them. We learn a lot of information in this first volume and I can’t wait to find out more.  

I love Michelle Rowen’s writing style! I really liked her Sarah Dearly series and her new YA novel Dark Kiss was also a pleasant surprise. I was therefore eager to read the Nightshade series. 
After going to buy the coffee for her coworkers in the nearest Starbucks, Jillian Conrad (or Jill) was far from suspecting that she would spend the worst day of her life. Indeed, just back from her coffee break, she is taken in hostage by a scientist who threatens her with a syringe and finally injects the mysterious substance in her neck. Immediately, a terrible pain invades her. Then she’s kidnapped by Declan, a cold-blooded killer with a scary look. 
So we follow these two characters during their infernal road trip. The universe created by Michelle Rowen is original and particularly successful. We discover a world where vampires – who are far from being angels – confront themselves and where chilling scientific experiments are common. This is a book full of action. Moreover we go from one surprise to another. Revelations and twists are numerous here and we are completely caught up in the plot. We don’t really have time to get bored. I must admit that I was surprised by the turn of events in the last third of the novel (from Chapter 18 to the end). It becomes completely crazy. The malfeasance of some secondary characters such as Dr. Gray or Carson did not really surprise me, however I was surprised by the Matthias’ attitude, who was supposed to be evil incarnate! I hope we see him again later because he is really fascinating. 
Regarding the main characters, I loved Jill. She is not a heroine with super powers, just a temporary office worker who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. An ordinary young woman whose circumstances have made her extraordinary. She is very brave despite everything that happens to her. I appreciated her strength of character. Certainly she is scared, not to mention the fact that she feels worse and worse because of the poison flowing through her veins, but she still hopes to get out of this alive. Then she tries to understand what is happening. She asks a lot of questions to everyone and does not hesitate to push Declan to his limits for answers, something that is really not easy because he is very intimidating. Speaking of Declan, then, I must say I was totally surprised by his appearance! Indeed, Declan has only one eye, his face and his body are covered with scars. It is true that Urban Fantasy heroes do not always have a perfect body but to this point it’s rare. To this we must add his cold and jaded temperament which makes him quite scary and even repulsive. And yet we fall under his spell, especially when we understand what made him to be like that. The author has managed to make of this character initially unattractive an engaging and beautiful man. It’s like The Beauty and the Beast. 
In short, you understand, I loved this book! It’s unfortunate that the series consists of only two volumes, we would have liked there to be more! Anyway, I am now looking forward to read the sequel.

Résumé : Pour Jillian Conrad, l’expression « être au mauvais endroit au mauvais moment » prend tout son sens. En effet, kidnappée par un assassin, elle se retrouve au beau milieu d’une guerre sans merci qui oppose les vampires à une organisation gouvernementale tentant de protéger l’humanité de ces monstres sanguinaires. Mais les apparences peuvent être trompeuses et son ravisseur, Declan, pourrait bien être son seul espoir.


Notre avis : Je ne connaissais Michelle Rowen que par sa série Sarah Dearly mais c’est vrai que ce roman est complètement différent de ce que j’ai pu lire d’elle. Il ne faut pas s’attendre à quelque chose tourné vers la chick-lit mais plutôt tourné vers la fantaisie urbaine. Et quel plaisir, l’auteur sait jouer des deux genres sans aucun problème.
Jillian est une jeune femme qui n’a rien demandé à personne et pourtant sa vie va être complètement chamboulée en deux secondes…. Le temps qu’un scientifique la prenne en otage en sortant d’un ascenseur pour lui injecter un produit qui semble intéresser pas mal de personnes mais qui la rend surtout très malade. Elle va tout de suite être emportée dans un monde où les vampires sont monnaie courante et où elle pourrait avoir une place prépondérante à présent. Emmenée dans un endroit secret, kidnappée par un tueur au sang-froid nommé Declan, elle va devoir faire face à une toute nouvelle perspective. Mais tout commence maintenant, et il n’existe aucun retour en arrière. Il se pourrait bien que ce produit qu’on lui a injecté ne la change à tout jamais.
J’ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié ce roman, c’était une réelle surprise. Jillian est une jeune femme que l’on apprend à connaitre tout au long du volume et même si elle est terrifiée par tout ce qu’il se passe, elle reste courageuse en toute circonstance. Elle m’a fait beaucoup sourire au début du roman à vouloir ses réponses et à ne poser que des questions tout au long de son voyage. J’ai pu tout à fait me mettre à sa place et me voir faire la même chose. C’est le genre de chose que je pourrais faire sans problème. J’ai été d’ailleurs très impressionnée par le self contrôle de Declan dans ces moments-là. Oui parce que c’est sûr qu’il faut en avoir ! Mais quoi qu’il se passe, qu’on la kidnappe, qu’on lui fasse peur, qu’on la maltraite, notre jeune héroïne essaie toujours de s’en sortir par n’importe quel moyen. Puis tout y passe ! Declan est aussi un personnage qui m’a tout de suite intrigué. On essaie de savoir ce qu’il a et de comprendre comment il peut supporter cette vie si solitaire. On ne l’aime pas au départ, voire on le déteste mais notre cœur s’attendrit dès qu’on comprend qui il est vraiment et ce qui le pousse à être ce qu’il est.
C’était un très bon roman, et je suis assez triste qu’il n’en existe que deux. Je suis cependant curieuse de pouvoir lire la suite, pour voir ce qu’il adviendra de nos héros car je sens que ça ne sera vraiment pas simple pour eux. On apprend énormément d’informations dans ce premier tome et j’ai hâte d’en découvrir plus.

J’adore le style d’écriture de Michelle Rowen ! J’avais beaucoup aimé sa série Sarah Dearly et son nouveau roman YA, Dark Kiss s’est révélé aussi être une agréable surprise. Quand j’ai appris qu’une autre de ses séries allait être publiée chez Milady, je n’avais qu’une hâte : pouvoir la lire. 
En allant chercher la commande de ses collègues de travail dans le Starbucks le plus proche, Jillian (ou Jill) était loin de se douter qu’elle passerait la pire journée de son existence. En effet, à peine de retour de sa pause-café, elle est prise en otage par un scientifique qui la menace avec une seringue et qui finit par lui injecter la mystérieuse substance dans le cou. Aussitôt, une terrible douleur l’envahit. Puis elle enlevée par Declan, un tueur au sang-froid et à l’allure effrayante. 
On suit donc ces deux personnages dans leur road trip infernal. L’univers créé par Michelle Rowen, en plus d’être original, est particulièrement réussi. On découvre un monde où les vampires – qui sont loin d’être des enfants de cœur – s’affrontent entre eux, et où les expériences scientifiques qui font froid dans le dos sont monnaie courante. C’est un livre bourré d’action. Qui plus est on va de surprise en surprise. Les révélations et les retournements de situation sont nombreux et du coup on est complètement happé par l’intrigue. On n’a vraiment pas le temps de s’ennuyer. J’avoue que j’ai été surprise par la tournure qu’ont pris les événements dans le dernier tiers du roman (à partir du chapitre 18). Cela devient carrément déjanté. La malfaisance de certains personnages secondaires tels que le docteur Gray ou encore Carson ne m’a pas vraiment surprise, en revanche j’ai été étonnée par l’attitude de Matthias, qui était censé être le mal incarné ! J’espère qu’on le reverra par la suite car il est vraiment fascinant. 
En ce qui concerne les personnages principaux, j’ai beaucoup aimé Jill. Ce n’est pas une héroïne avec des supers pouvoirs, juste une employée de bureau intérimaire qui se trouvait au mauvais endroit au mauvais moment. Une jeune femme ordinaire en somme mais que les circonstances ont rendue extraordinaire. Elle est très courageuse, compte tenu de tout ce qui lui arrive. J’ai apprécié sa force de caractère. Certes, elle est effrayée, sans parler du fait qu’elle se sent de plus en plus mal à cause du poison qui circule dans ses veines mais elle garde l’espoir de s’en sortir vivante. Puis elle essaie de comprendre ce qui se passe. Elle pose beaucoup de questions à tout le monde et n’hésite pas à pousser Declan à bout pour obtenir des réponses, chose qui n’est pas vraiment aisée car ce dernier est très intimidant. En parlant de Declan, alors là, je dois dire que j’ai été totalement surprise par son apparence physique ! En effet, Declan est borgne, balafré et couvert de cicatrices ! Il est vrai que les héros de séries Urban Fantasy n’ont pas toujours un physique parfait mais à ce point-là c’est rare. A cela il faut ajouter son tempérament froid et blasé qui le rend assez effrayant voire même repoussant. Et pourtant on est sous le charme, surtout lorsqu’on comprend, par la suite, ce qui l’a rendu ainsi. L’auteure a réussi à faire de ce personnage au départ si peu attirant, un homme attachant et beau. On se croirait dans la Belle et la Bête. 
Bref, vous l’aurez compris, j’ai beaucoup aimé ! J’ai cru comprendre que la série ne comportait que deux tomes, c’est dommage, on aurait aimé qu’il y en ait plus ! Quoi qu’il en soit, je suis maintenant impatiente de lire la suite.

Depuis que je suis vampire, ma vie est un vrai chaos. Entre mon histoire d’amour impossible et mes problèmes avec les chasseurs, je touche le fond. Mais j’ai bien l’intention de me reprendre.
D’abord, trouver du travail. Or avec moi, un entretien d’embauche a vite fait de se transformer en cauchemar. Et pour couronner le tout, voilà qu’une sorcière me transforme en nocturne, une espèce de vampire dangereuse et allergique au soleil. Finie, la bronzette. Génial !
Je commence à me demander si quelqu’un là-haut n’a pas une dent contre moi…

 Les vacances d’un Serial Killer – Nadine Monfils

Comme chaque été, Alfonse Destrooper part en villégiature à la mer du Nord. Josette, sa femme, est bien décidée à se la couler douce, entre farniente à la plage et shopping dans la station balnéaire. Les enfants, Steven et Lourdes, emportent leur caméra pour immortaliser ces vacances tant attendues. Quant à la mémé, véritable Calamiry Jane, elle les accompagne dans sa vieille caravane. Mais le voyage commence mal ! Un motard pique le sac de Josette à un carrefour et s’enfuit. Furieux, Alfonse s’arrête dans un snack pour s’enfiler une bière pendant que les deux ados, avec leur manie de tout filmer. s’amusent à planquer leur caméra dans les toilettes, histoire de recueillir quelques images truculentes. La famille Destrooper reprend finalement la route. À l’arrière de la voiture, les ados visionnent tranquillement leur vidéo. Quand, soudain, ils découvrent à l’écran le cadavre du motard gisant sur le sol des toilettes du restoroute ! Et, pour couronner le tout, la magnifique pension dans laquelle les Destrooper ont prévu de séjourner est un rade pourri. Les vacances en enfer ne font que commencer… Une comédie décapante, teintée d’humour noir et d’un zeste de poésie, un hymne à la Belgique.

Genny croit qu’elle a détruit la malédiction d’infertilité des faes… mais les faes sont toujours stériles. C’est un sort dévastateur auquel le mystérieux Empereur pourrait avoir une solution – Si Genny peut le trouver.

Déjà que je ne peux plus m’exposer au soleil sans risquer ma vie, Gideon Chase continue de me mettre la pression. Il exige que je quitte Thierry et que je le transforme, lui, en vampire. In the northern California town of Coventry, two teenage brothers go into the woods one day, but only one comes back. No one knows what happened to the younger brother, Josh, until twenty years later, when the older brother, Oren, now an ex-investigator for the Army CID, returns to Coventry for the first time in many years. His first morning back, he hears a thump on the front porch. Lying in front of the door is a human jawbone, the teeth still intact. And it is not the first such object, his father tells him. Other remains have been left there as well. Josh is coming home . . . bone by bone.” Using all his investigative skills, Oren sets out to solve the mystery of his brother s murder, but Coventry is a town full of secrets and secret-keepers: the housekeeper with the fugitive past, the deputy with the old grudge, the reclusive ex-cop from L.A., the woman with the title of town monster, and, not least of all, Oren himself. But the greatest secret of all belonged to his brother, and it is only by unraveling it that Oren can begin to discover the truth that has haunted them all for twenty years.
