The Last Word by Lisa Lutz

The Spellmans, Book 6

Synopsis: Isabel Spellman is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned—all occupational hazards of working at her family’s firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of her boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that the Spellmans would lay off after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such shenanigans behind her.

In The Last Word, Izzy’s troubles are just beginning. After her hostile takeover of Spellman Investigations, Izzy’s parents simply go on strike. Her sister, Rae, comes back into the family business with questionable motivations. Her other employees seem to be coping with anxiety disorders, and she has no idea how to pay the bills. However, her worst threat comes from someone who is no relation. Within months of assuming control of the business, Izzy is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, who happens to have Alzheimer’s, which Izzy and he are diligently trying to keep under wraps. Not only is Slayter’s business and reputation on the line, but if Izzy gets indicted for embezzlement, she’ll lose everything—her business, her license, and her family’s livelihood. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI? The answer makes The Last Word, hands down, the most thrilling book in this bestselling, award-nominated series.

Review: I was looking forward to the release of this new volume! I must say that this is always the case for each of the volumes in this series. Indeed Lisa Lutz is a wonderful Mystery Thriller / Comedy writer. In this type of books I have two authors that I love, and Lisa Lutz is definitely one of them. Izzy and his crazy family are always a delight to follow and I love each second!

I admit that the first thing that came to my mind when starting this book is my great hope to go back to a relationship between Henry and Izzy. Well I must say that after a few pages it is clear that our hope is doomed to failure. Completely and permanently. I was really sad by this, for me these two characters were really meant to be together and I think it will take me some time for me to accept the fact that someone else is here for our heroine. But let’s leave that aside for a moment.

Our heroine took over the family business and intends to operate as she wishes. Yes, isn’t she the owner? Doesn’t she have the right to demand what she wants? The power quickly goes to her head and as her parents were not very happy with this change, they will go on strike altogether. Coming to work at odd hours? Done. Coming dressed in pajamas? Done! Doing everything to make Izzy’s life and work difficult? Done and redone! It was really fun to see how they could make her suffer so she capitulates and understands that what she did was not a good thing. But again, she must really understand it. In addition to that, I was pleasantly surprised to see Slayter throughout the novel, the new Izzy’s boss. He will manage to do what most people were never able to do, like make her jog. Yes and I can say that she doesn’t like that, but not at all. She became very close to this man who sees her as his confidante, but with his onset condition, it is increasingly difficult to keep the secret. Especially when someone is trying to sabotage everything they have done so far, discrediting this great leader while accusing Izzy to steal funds. Yes of course, she has already committed minor offenses but this time it is much bigger and she could lose everything, especially with her employees who do their best to ignore her. Our young detective must find the culprit before getting charged for something she did not do. And without the need to think more, Rae is back, wanting to rework in business with a very special position. David and Maggie try their best to deprogram Sidney, after a big brainwashing done by her grandmother. Finally you can see, not a dull moment and a lot of things in perspective that keep us interested throughout the novel.

I was really curious to see where Lisa Lutz wanted to take us this time and I must say I am not disappointed with the trip. This is again a very good novel and I hope there will be many more. If you do not know the series, I can only recommend it to you, you will surely not be disappointed. Crazy family, explosive business and many disasters await you. Of course, all this is not rosy and there will be pretty emotional moments that are very well written and that surprised me. Finally you can see, a nice sixth great volume even if I did not have exactly what I wanted, but is not this always in real life? A series to discover!

The Last Word de Lisa Lutz (VO)

Trail of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz

The Spellmans, Book 5

Synopsis: FOR THE FIRST TIME in Spellman history, Isabel Spellman, PI, might be the most normal member of her family. Mom has taken on an outrageous assortment of extracurricular activities—with no apparent motive. Dad has a secret. Izzy’s brother and sister are at war—for no apparent reason. And her niece keeps saying “banana” even though she hates bananas. That’s not to say that Izzy isn’t without her own troubles. Her boyfriend, Henry Stone, keeps wanting “to talk,” a prospect Isabel evades by going out with her new drinking buddy, none other than Gertrude Stone, Henry’s mother.

Things aren’t any simpler on the business side of Spellman Investigations. First, Rae is hired to follow a girl, only to fake the surveillance reports. Then a math professor hires Izzy to watch his immaculate apartment while he unravels like a bad formula. And as the questions pile up, Izzy won’t stop hunting for the answers—even when they threaten to shatter both the business and the family.

Review: I love the Spellmans series and I waited with great anticipation to read this fifth book. Especially knowing that Izzy was finally in a relationship with Henry, which I wanted from the beginning of the series. But I must say that the book didn’t take the turn I expected. But not at all. It was a very good novel, but I was a little upset by the choices of some characters.

Izzy finds herself once again to investigate rather strange business. She has to follow a man for her wife, while her father is committed to follow this woman. Our young investigator immediately understands that there is something fishy in this story. But with a lack of money, her father refused for her to seek the truth or she would be fired outright. Alas, when she has something in mind, it’s difficult to stop her. But you can imagine that’s not all. She is also committed to monitor an apartment while the occupant is outside. Her visits are often unnecessary but it is easy money … well until some rather strange events happen. I confess that I did not see coming the reason behind all the owner’s problems. But it was still pretty funny!

I was pleasantly surprised to find D., the former prisoner that Isabel managed to release. He is hired as a full member in the Spellman family. And it must be said that he fully understood how the family functions and hides more secrets than they all might think. It was pretty funny to see him scheming in the back of the family without them realizing it. We also discover the Maggie and David’s baby, a young girl who has the nature of a real Spellman. Well Rae is always here to help too but again it was a great pleasure to understand our little darling and I’m curious to see what will become of her  while growing up. There is one person I did not expect to see and it is Gertrude Stone, Henry’s mother. She is the opposite of our policeman and she could be the best Izzy’s friend! They are a lot alike and get along as soon as they meet. Another thing that quite surprised me, the Rae’s behavior. I felt like she wanted a different future but I’m pretty amazed by her choice.

So now the things that annoy me … I love Henry and Izzy, they make a perfect couple and I was curious to finally see them together. The only problem? Isabel avoids Henry like the plague since he decides they need to speak together. And I must say that the decisions of our heroine completely disappointed me. I even tried to skip some chapters to see what would happen and then go back. But nothing was as I wanted it to be, and it’s true that once I finished it the only thing I has in mind was: “No, but this is not possible, why, why??? “. I do not understand the Izzy’s choice and I do not know why the author went in that direction, but I have hope and I’ll cross my fingers for the next volume. Another thing, it is true, that surprised me is the lack of scene between Henry and Rae while they had some very important moments in each of the other novels. But it may also be due to the fact that our younger sister grows and no longer has the same sense of priorities.

The plot is very interesting and we have some surprising revelations here. I loved the initiatives that our heroine took over her work. It was a very good book although I am really disappointed with some of her choices as I said. The problem is that it is this feeling that remains when we finish the book. I really hope everything will work out but I’m a little afraid to see where Lisa Lutz will lead us in the next novel. Especially since I feel that this will not be particularly where I would go.

The Spellmans strike again by Lisa Lutz

The Spellmans, Book 4

Synopsis: At the ripe old age of thirty-two, former wild child Isabel “Izzy” Spellman has finally agreed to take over the family business. And the transition won’t be a smooth one. First among her priorities as head of Spellman Investigations is to dig up some dirt on the competition, slippery ex-cop Rick Harkey–a task she may enjoy a little too much. Next, faced with a baffling missing-persons case at the home of an aging millionaire, Izzy hires an actor friend, Len, to infiltrate the mansion as an undercover butler–a role he may enjoy a little much. Meanwhile, Izzy is being blackmailed by her mother (photographic evidence of Prom Night 1994) to commit to regular blind dates with promising professionals–an arrangement that doesn’t thrill Connor, an Irish bartender on the brink of becoming Ex-boyfriend #12.
At Spellman headquarters, it’s business as unusual. Doorknobs and light fixtures are disappearing every day, Mom’s been spotted crying in the pantry, and a series of increasingly demanding Spellman Rules (Rule #27: No Speaking Today) can’t quite hold the family together. Izzy also has to decipher weekly “phone calls from the edge” from her octogenarian lawyer, Morty, as well as Detective Henry Stone’s mysterious interest in rekindling their relationsh…well, whatever it was. Just when it looks like things can’t go more haywire, little sister Rae’s internship researching pro bono legal cases leads the youngest Spellman to launch a grassroots campaign that could spring an innocent man from jail–or land Rae in it. The Spellmans Strike Again is hands down the most hilarious, thrilling, and moving book in this bestselling, award-nominated series. And it proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Isabel Spellman, no matter how much she matures, will never be able to follow Rule #1: Act Normal.

Review: There are not a lot of chick-lit authors that I really love but I must say that Lisa Lutz is completely one of them, along with Janet Evanovich, although obviously their style is totally different. The Spellman series is completely crazy, I love the presentation, I love the characters and I love their ideas and humor. All the volumes retain the same freshness and it is a real pleasure to meet each of our protagonists every time.

Izzy realizes that her life is at a turning point and that certain choices are now available to her. Her life does not suit her and she does not know how to get out of all this. I must say that Morty is not there anymore, she doesn’t have a lot of work and her boyfriend is not really very attentive. But shift work does not help either so they could be together. But Izzy is determined to continue her many and varied adventures, such as proving the guilt of her enemy since she discovered what he did in the previous volume. But this survey is quite difficult and it’s now a feasible obsession. Maggie and David are a lot closer in this volume and it is quite funny to see that everyone is constantly encouraging them. I’m still surprised to see how she did not run away after seeing this mad and crazy family. It is still a mystery to me especially when we see the new Rae’s goal: Free a prisoner she knows innocent with the Maggie’s help. As for the parents of our heroine? They’re up to something secret that everyone is trying to discover throughout the book. But of course every secret is revealed in due time. I confess, however, that I had many questions in relation to what was happening and I did not expect the reason at the end of book.

Many things happen in this story, we can pass from joy to tears in no time. Since the last book, Izzy knowingly avoids Henry, something I totally understand. But our detective doesn’t hear it that way and gladly apply the tricks of the Spellman family to get what he wants too. A real pleasure! I loved their games, and I was very happy with the purpose of his cunning. However, I do not expect such an end … I must say that the atmosphere change is instantaneous and I even had tears in my eyes while watching a sad event. A nice end that makes us thinks.

Lisa Lutz knows how to play with the feelings of the characters and suddenly with ours. And of course, as the end of each novel, I can’t wait to find out more and to read more fun stories of the crazy Spellman family. A new very good volume for a series that I recommend to any fan of chick-lit.

Revenge of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz

The Spellmans, Book 3

Synopsis: Having been ordered into therapy after getting a little too close to her previous subject, former private investigator Izzy Spellman is wisely taking a break from Spellman Inc, having embarked on a less controversial career as a barmaid. But when her boss, Milo, simultaneously cuts her bartending hours and introduces her to a ‘friend’ looking for a private eye, Izzy reluctantly finds herself with a new client. A suspicious husband who wants his wife tailed, it would appear to be a routine case involving nothing more than that most boring of PI rituals: surveillance. But Izzy soon discovers that she’s not the only person keeping a close eye on Mrs Ernie Black and with each passing hour the Case of the Wayward Wife throws up more questions than answers.

Review: Ah, if only you knew, I have a great history with this book. I waited several years in the hope that the third volume would be translated in French (in a smaller format because it was in a large one). Yes, because I decided that since I had the first two like that in French, I had to have the following book in the same format. So I hardly expected to finally have an announcement of the release. But that day I realized it was still much cheaper to buy the book in English. Yessss you understand, I waited all this time for nothing! The good thing about that, is that I was able to immediately order the fourth volume at the end of my read. And I felt that the fifth would soon be here too. Because yes I fell in love with this series since the beginning, and even though every time I’m a little afraid of being disappointed, this really is not the case. I loved this new novel as it is just as crazy as the others.

Isabel needs to deal with a lot of problems and since the last book she is forced to follow a therapy or at least several sessions to not go to jail. I must say that she does not like it at all and did everything to pass the time (although I must say that it was always fun to see that). She now works as a bartender for Milo even if he doesn’t really agree, let alone her parents who decide that she should go back to work for them. Henry meanwhile has a pretty girlfriend, something that is not to the taste of our heroine but then it gets more complicated when Izzy comes to appreciate her too. In addition, she will try to go back to work again on a rather intriguing case, which is more complicated as we progress in the story. Rae is equal to herself and always up to something. I think she is the smartest girl I know, she knows everything about everything. David, unlike the others, changes dramatically and I am sure we will have a lot of surprised about him in the future.

Like the first one, I was totally immersed in the Izzy’s world. It is always so funny and crazy to follow her and her family, we never get bored for a second. There are moments of surprise, and I must say that even if sometimes things do not end as we would have liked, it is actually quite logical. Lisa Lutz is one of my favorite authors in this type of books and she has an undeniable talent for featuring the madness of her characters. We can only love them all. We can easily understand Izzt, we doubt with her, we’re sad and we laugh with her.

Finally, it is a new book I really loved, without any downtime. One thing, do not start to read late at night, verrryyy bad idea, I didn’t want to put it down. I look forward to my fourth book now to immerse myself in it. A series that I recommend to all of you if you want to have a good time.

La Revanche des Spellman de Lisa Lutz

The Spellmans, Tome 3
