Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep (VO)

Mythos Academy, Book 1

Synopsis : My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody’s head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.

But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I’m determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why—especially since I should have been the one who died. . .

Review : I’ve seen this book a lot on many blogs, so I was very curious about it. Mainly, because it was the first Young Adult novel of Jennifer Estep too, and I really like this author. I can tell that I’m not disappointed about the story!

In the beginning, it was a little difficult to read some parts about the death of the Gwen’s mum. The author often mentioned it, maybe a little to much… It’s rapidly repetitive, but after some chapters it doesn’t matter anymore.
The heroine’s character is quite interesting. She finds herself in a new school full of Valkyrie, Spartan, or other god or goddess descendant… and she is so different from them ! She doesn’t have any skill for the fights, doesn’t wear expensive clothes, nothing which could help her to be close to them. She is therefore alone all the time and doesn’t have any friends. She is however a strong girl, who tries to impose her opinions, even if for the others, she is just nothing.

I really loved the character of Daphné, a Valkyrie who in the beginning will hate Gwen but who finally will become her friend. It’s a young girl who doesn’t evolve in the same world as our heroine, but who however, will understand that sometimes, the notion of friendship is very different according to some persons.

Logan is quite intriguing too. We wonder what he really wants by playing like that with Gwen without considering the consequences. This character makes me think about an other one about a book I read a few months ago « The Darke Academy » by Gabriella Poole, and I’m curious to know if their future would be the same. But I may be wrong too.

I really like this story. We follow the investigation, making assumptions with Gwen. I was quite surprised in the end because my speculations were wrong, and I didn’t expect this culprit.
Therefore, I’m very curious to read the sequel. But I will have to wait a little before December.
