Review: I really like Jennifer Estep’s novels, so when I saw the release of this brand new book and series, I could not help but take it! I was eager to discover a whole new story of this author and I must say that I really had a great time.

Everyone thinks that Evie has no powers and she keeps secret her immunity to magic. So since her arrival at the palace, she is put aside, forgotten, and especially used as a pawn for all that the other members of the crown do not want to do. If you have to make a cake? It’s her. A dance for the ambassador? Her too. But she hopes to be able to go home soon and leave politics aside. Yet her life will change radically when the queen’s daughter kills her own mother. Dead, she is the only survivor of this massacre, but she will have to flee and especially to hide so they can’t find her.

As I said I had a great time with the novel. The story is catchy and it is very easy to connect to Evie. She does not want to reveal who she is even as everyone is looking for her and she thinks at best about how to react to the situation. Alas, her choices are not so simple. To face this new life, she will have to forge a carapace, evolve and eventually become another person. She who has always been an erased person will have to face her problems and put her life in danger more than once. The other characters are just as intriguing and I admit that I am curious to learn a little more about Sullivan!

The book is also full of the gladiator culture and I found that the mix was very interesting. Yes, there are many different aspects to this novel and I can tell you that I can not wait to read more. I did not expect this first volume to go that far regarding the story, but many things are, I’m sure, still to come!

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

JE: Thanks for hosting me. I appreciate it. My name is Jennifer Estep, and I’m a New York Times and international bestselling author. I write several fantasy book series, including Elemental Assassin and Mythos Academy.

Can you tell us more about Kill the Queen?

JE: KILL THE QUEEN is book #1 in my Crown of Shards epic fantasy series. The series focuses on Everleigh Blair, a member of the royal family who is distantly in line for the throne of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. But when the unthinkable happens, Evie finds herself fighting for her life—both inside and outside the gladiator arena.
So the book is sort of like Gladiator meets Game of Thrones with a kick-butt heroine. I hope that everyone enjoys getting to know Evie and all the other characters in KILL THE QUEEN.

Was it difficult to switch up to fantasy?

JE: I’ve written more than 30 books, ranging from urban fantasy to young adult fantasy to paranormal romance, but switching over to epic fantasy was a fun challenge. Everything is a bit bigger in epic fantasy, especially when it comes to the stakes. So far, I’ve had a lot of fun writing epic fantasy and really trying to stretch myself as a writer.

It’s to have a gladiator theme, did you make a lot of researches?

JE: I did a little bit of research, but as with all my books, I really like to try to put my own spin on things when it comes to the characters, magic, and world building. I hope everyone enjoys my take on gladiators.

What can we expect of the sequel?

JE: PROTECT THE PRINCE, book #2, will be out in 2019. I can’t say too much about the book yet, so stay tuned for more.

Avis : J’aime beaucoup les romans de Jennifer Estep, alors, quand j’ai vu la sortie de ce tout nouveau livre et du coup d’une nouvelle série, je n’ai pas pu me retenir de le prendre ! J’étais impatiente de découvrir une toute nouvelle histoire de cette auteure et je dois dire que j’ai vraiment passé un très bon moment.

Tout le monde pense qu’Evie n’a pas de pouvoirs et elle garde secrète son immunité à la magie. Alors depuis son arrivée au palais, elle est mise de côté, oubliée, et surtout utilisée comme un pion pour tout ce que les autres membres de la couronne ne veulent pas faire. S’il faut faire un gâteau ? C’est elle. Une danse pour l’ambassadeur ? Elle aussi. Mais elle espère pouvoir bientôt rentrer chez elle et laisser l’aspect politique de côté. Pourtant sa vie va changer radicalement quand la fille de la reine assassine sa mère. Crue morte, elle est la seule survivante à ce massacre, mais elle va devoir s’enfuir et surtout se cacher pour ne pas qu’on la retrouve.

Comme je le disais j’ai passé un très bon moment avec le roman. L’histoire est entrainante et il est très facile de s’attacher à Evie. Elle ne veut pas dévoiler qui elle est même si tout le monde la cherche et elle réfléchit au mieux pour savoir comment réagir à la situation. Hélas ses choix ne sont pas si simples. Pour affronter cette nouvelle vie, elle va devoir se forger une carapace, évoluer et finalement devenir une autre personne. Elle qui a toujours été une personne effacée va devoir faire face à ses problèmes et mettre sa vie en danger plus d’une fois. Les autres personnages sont tout aussi intrigants et j’avoue que je suis curieuse d’en apprendre un peu plus sur Sullivan !

Le livre est aussi très empreint de la culture des gladiateurs et j’ai trouvé que le mélange était très intéressant. Oui, il y a beaucoup d’aspects différents dans ce roman et je peux vous dire que je suis impatiente d’en lire plus. Je ne m’attendais pas à ce que ce premier tome aille aussi loin dans l’histoire, mais beaucoup de choses sont, je suis sûre, encore à venir !

Review: It’s been a long time since I’ve read a novel featuring superheroes and I admit that, knowing the talent of Jennifer Estep, I was curious to discover another of her series. I have this novel for years and it is true that I do not regret finally trying it because I had a good time.

Carmen Cole hates superheroes and their alter-egos the ubervillans. Why is that? On the day of her wedding and feeling that her fiancé hides something from her, she decides to go and ask him for explanations to find him cheating on her with her best friend … But that’s not all, because on top of that, he kept a secret that he was the superhero of the city and her best friend the villain of the story. Scorned and after revealing their identities, she decides to take revenge by unmasking all the heroes and villains so that everyone knows who they are! But now, by becoming more and more known and by unveiling the most appreciated heroes, her career plummets overnight when her latest victim commits suicide after the publication of the paper. Putting everything in question, Carmen will have to face new attentions and especially ubervillains who want her to discover the identity of the sexiest superhero: Striker.

I liked this novel, it’s fresh, it’s full of ideas and it changes from what we usually read everywhere. Carmen realizes little by little that her revenge can have terrible repercussions … Her relationship with Striker is a little delicate and we can see that neither of them really knows how to act in relation to the other. A link exists between them, which pushes them towards each other and yet both know that it is a bad idea.

The story was nice and I really had a good time with the characters. However it is true that there is not a lot of suspense regarding the identity of the characters. While Carmen is looking for who Striker might be, we are almost sure about his identity, just like the great villain of the story. It is not really a problem but I wondered if it was done on purpose or not. In any case it’s a different story to have a good time!

Avis : Ça fait très longtemps que je n’ai pas lu un roman mettant en scène des super-héros et j’avoue que, connaissant le talent de Jennifer Estep, j’étais curieuse de découvrir une autre de ses séries. J’ai ce roman depuis des années et c’est vrai que je ne regrette pas de m’être enfin lancée car j’ai passé un bon moment.

Carmen Cole déteste les super-héros et leurs alter-égos les ubervillains. Pourquoi ? Le jour de son mariage et sentant que son fiancé lui cache quelque chose, elle décide d’aller lui demander des explications pour le retrouver en train de folâtrer avec sa meilleure amie… Mais ce n’est pas tout, car en plus de cela, il lui a caché qu’il était le super-héros de la ville et sa meilleure amie la méchante de l’histoire. Bafouée et après avoir révélé leurs identités, elle décide de se venger en démasquant tous les héros et vilains pour que tout le monde sache qui ils sont ! Mais voilà, en devenant de plus en plus connue et en dévoilant les héros les plus appréciés, sa carrière dégringole du jour au lendemain quand sa dernière victime en date se suicide après la parution du papier. Remettant tout en question, Carmen va devoir faire face à de nouvelles attentions et notamment des ubervillains qui veulent qu’elle découvre l’identité du super-héros le plus sexy : Striker.

J’ai bien aimé ce roman, c’est frais, c’est plein d’idées et ça change de ce qu’on a l’habitude de lire un peu partout. Carmen se rend petit à petit compte que sa vengeance peut avoir de terribles répercutions… Sa relation avec Striker est un peu délicate et on voit bien qu’aucun des deux ne sait vraiment comment agir par rapport à l’autre. Un lien existe entre eux, qui les pousse l’un vers l’autre et pourtant tous les deux savent bien que c’est une mauvaise idée.

L’histoire était sympa et j’ai vraiment passé un bon moment avec les personnages. Cependant c’est vrai qu’il y a quand même moins de suspens par rapport à l’identité des personnages. Alors que Carmen cherche qui Striker pourrait bien être, on se doute grandement de son identité, tout comme pour la grande méchante de l’histoire. Ce n’est pas très gênant mais je me suis demandée si c’était fait exprès ou pas. Dans tous les cas c’est une histoire différente qui fait passer un bon moment !

Mythos Academy: Colorado, Book 1

Synopsis: New school year, same old problems . . .

At Mythos Academy, everyone knows exactly who I am: Rory Forseti, Spartan girl and the daughter of Reapers.

Even though I fought alongside my cousin Gwen Frost to save the mythological world from Loki and his evil Reapers of Chaos, I’m still the most hated girl at the academy because of all the horrible things my parents did. I had hoped that this school year would be different, but the other kids just won’t let me forget about my parents.

But something strange is going on at the Colorado academy. First, I run into a Viking guy who dislikes me more than most. Then I notice some odd artifacts in the Library of Antiquities. And worst of all, I start hearing rumors about a new group of Reapers who can summon mythological monsters.

I might be the most hated girl at Mythos Academy, but I’m also the only one who can save it . . .

Review: I was very happy to hear that a German publisher had asked for more novels from the author, but even more that she agreed to offer us this story in English too!

It was great to immerse in the Mythos universe again. And what to say when in addition we find some characters that we had previously met. Moreover, it is the turn of Rory, Gwen’s cousin, to be on the front of the stage. Poor Rory who hopes to make a fresh start with her aunt but it seems that as always, people are only whispering about her because of her Reapers parents. It’s really not an easy situation for the young woman. But here, besides that, she finds herself mixed up with new problems. It would seem that their enemies are not annihilated as they thought when Rory discovers that some Reapers are trying to seize powerful artifacts to dominate the world once more. Unexpectedly part of a spy team at school, Rory will discover what the shadows hide.

It was a nice story to read even if I confess that I preferred the previous novels, I had a good time with this new story. I wonder, however, how the author will continue this plot and I am curious to read what she reserves us for the future. You will see for yourself: new characters, a derivative intrigue and even a little moment with Gwen at the end of the story.

Mythos Academy: Colorado, Tome 1

À l’Académie Mythos, tout le monde sait exactement qui je suis : Rory Forseti, Spartiate et fille de Reapers.

Même si je me suis battue aux côtés de ma cousine Gwen Frost pour sauver le monde mythologique de Loki et de ses diaboliques Reapers of Chaos, je suis toujours la fille la plus détestée de l’académie à cause de toutes les horribles choses que mes parents ont faites. J’avais espéré que cette année scolaire serait différente, mais les autres enfants ne me laisseront pas oublier mes parents.

Mais quelque chose d’étrange se passe à l’académie du Colorado. D’abord, je rencontre un gars Viking qui me déteste plus que la plupart des gens. Ensuite, je remarque quelques artefacts étranges dans la Bibliothèque des Antiquités. Et pire encore, je commence à entendre des rumeurs sur un nouveau groupe de Faucheurs qui peuvent invoquer des monstres mythologiques.

Je suis peut-être la fille la plus détestée de l’Académie Mythos, mais je suis aussi la seule à pouvoir les sauver. . .

Avis : J’étais très contente d’apprendre qu’un éditeur allemand avait demandé plus de romans à l’auteur, mais encore plus qu’elle ait accepté de nous proposer cette histoire en anglais aussi !

C’était super de se retrouver une fois de plus dans l’univers des Mythos. Et puis que dire quand en plus on retrouve des personnages que nous avions déjà rencontrés précédemment. D’ailleurs, c’est au tour de Rory, la cousine de Gwen, d’être sur le devant de la scène. Pauvre Rory qui espère prendre un nouveau départ avec sa tante mais il semblerait que comme toujours, les gens ne font que chuchoter à son sujet à cause de ses parents Reapers. Ce n’est vraiment pas une situation facile pour la jeune femme. Mais voilà, en plus de cela, elle se retrouve par hasard mêlée à de nouveaux problèmes. Il semblerait que leurs ennemis ne soient pas anéantis comme ils ne pensaient quand Rory découvre que certains Reapers essaient de s’emparer d’artéfacts puissants pour dominer une fois de plus le monde. Faisant partie de façon inattendue d’une équipe d’espions à l’école, Rory va découvrir ce qu’il se cache dans l’ombre de l’école.

C’était une histoire sympa à lire même si j’avoue préférer les romans précédents, j’ai passé un bon moment avec cette nouvelle histoire. Je me demande cependant comment l’auteure va continuer cette trame et je suis curieuse de lire ce qu’elle nous réserve pour la suite. Vous verrez par vous-même de nouveaux personnages, une trame dérivée et même un petit moment avec Gwen en fin d’histoire.

Review: I really had fun while discovering the first two volumes and it is true that I was really looking forward to be able to immerse myself in this third one. I can also tell you that I was completely carried away by all what the author has presented! A great volume again.
We thus find our heroine launched on new adventures and I must say that it will take her courage because she will literally see all the colors!

Indeed, it seems that Victor has finally decided to hit hard to take the lead of all families. Fortunately for them, our heroes had anticipated this attack to limit the effects but it does not change the terrible consequences that will occur. It was fascinating to see our heroes coming together to try to save their friends, and it will not be easy, that’s for sure. Lila will be the brain of the group and the main target of the Draconi with Devon. I was really excited to see how everything would unfold, how our heroes would be able to get by, to understand the designs of Victor, to see how Lila would be able to release all these people she loves. Many important events are presented here and I admit that what intrigued me most was the interaction of our heroine with the monsters of her city. It’s quite touching to see the confidence she has in them, to see that she knows them better than anyone and finally that they can also be there for her. It really is a very good novel!

I do not know if this volume is the last one, but if this is the case the author has perfectly managed to close her history, even if it’s true that I’d really love to have more. I was carried away from the start of the volume and that until the end! I must say that we are immersed quickly into the action and we look forward to the resolution of the story. Lila has also evolved tremendously through the books and it’s true that it’s nice to see that, her being part of something and to have friends who rely on her and on which she can count on too. Her story with Devon is also very touching!

As I said, I had once again a great time. If you do not know the series, I can only advise you to try, you will be carried away by this unusual story, these characters we love and this evil that we hope to see disappear! It rocks!
