Synopsis : The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.
True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.
Review : I confess I don’t really know what to say now that I’ve finished this book. It was a very different book, I’ve never read a book like that before. The author has a very personal style and I don’t have any equivalence in mind.
We fall in a story where the notion of past and present mixes up, and so, it was a little difficult to follow every events sometimes. It’s a fact that allows to understand little by little what really happens, to replace the events, or even to understand some meetings.
Le Cirque de Rêves, the place where the story takes place, is itself a very atypical circus. It goes in town without any announcements and it opens only at night. The ones who want to come into it during the day, will do it with the treat of being exsanguine.
The dreamers and the persons looking for magic rush here to assist to some wonderful shows.
We meet, some second characters with very interesting aspects, each in their own way. Everyone has a role to play in this story but for some persons, we can really know it at the end of the book. Therefore, it’s really curious to follow characters we don’t know anything about and whose we don’t understand what they are doing here.
In this world, a game evolves, a game we don’t know a lot of things about. Indeed, It’s something which is very frustrating. We start the story, wondering if we could answer our questions quickly, but it wasn’t the case. We fall in the middle of a story which continues to progress with us.
Celia and Marco were raised since their childhood to surpass their power and to compete each other. But even them don’t know anything about this game, the rules, the goal, the purpose or even their opponent. So they will continue their life to understand what’s going on and to choose their own future. But finally, it would be a very difficult thing to do. I really loved Célia, she was a wonderful girl, full of kindness and determination, willing to do anything to be free of her chains.
It was a beautiful story and it has a very particular style. We discover a new world where we’re shared between enchantment and the difficulties of the life. There is so much to learn in this book and we just can’t wait to know what happens all the time to each characters.
