Kiss the Dead by Laurell K. Hamilton

Anita Blake, Book 21

Synopsis: When a fifteen-year-old girl is abducted by vampires, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Anita Blake to find her. And when she does, she’s faced with something she’s never seen before: a terrifyingly ordinary group of people—kids, grandparents, soccer moms—all recently turned and willing to die to avoid serving a master. And where there’s one martyr, there will be more…

But even vampires have monsters that they’re afraid of. And Anita is one of them…

review: I’m always very anxious before starting a new Anita Blake novel. Well I think everyone can understand my reasons if you follow the series. I had a few problems with some books and I was wondering if L.K.H. managed to change the situation we had about the characters and the story. It’s a series I really loved, but I think it’s always difficult to keep the same level for so long, mainly with our heroine’s sexual life. I’m sure you know what I mean without enter in the details.
I have to say I’m very happy that this book was about a real police investigation. It’s been a long time since we hadn’t had something like that! Of course, as always, everyone judges her, but it’s more regulated than before. The appearance of some new vampires different from others arouses the suspicion of our young Marshal who tries to understand what is going on and who stands behind it. Mainly when we learn that these vampires want to fight to be free, to live without any masters. I confess I was very surprised by the idea; it’s an interesting aspect we can approach here. But I think everything is resolved a little too fast, mainly as we finally don’t even see Benjamin, the man we speak about all along the book. It’s perhaps normal… But I confess I was intrigued by him and I was disappointed to have an easy solution.
Well, as always, the personal life of our heroine has a big impact on the story. I think it could never be different. But we’re getting used to it now, don’t we? It’s true we have many sex scenes… And Anita is so much in the action that she even forgets to feed the ardeur. Yes, yes it’s true! So, of course, poor Anita needs to restart from the beginning. I confess the idea made me smile, for one time, OK I got it, but after twice we wonder if she doesn’t do it on purpose. Personally, I think that some of the scenes didn’t help the story to progress and they were quite useless… It’s unfortunate because it was so good at first…
I know it seems I’m very negative about the book and it’s also a pleasure to read a new book featuring Anita but I think I’ll wait one more time and see how the sequel is. We can feel the desire to return to the first books but I think it’s impossible. So we need to adapt ourselves. It was however pleasant to find all the characters despite Richard isn’t here this time. But Micah, Nathaniel, Jean Claude, Asher and many more are here for us.
Despite all that, I really enjoyed getting into the world of our heroine and the story is a fast read. Well, it’s true the chapters aren’t very long either and we can progress quite quickly. I liked this book, more than some last ones and I would like to see what will happen now.

    • Oh 20 is a low number for Anita. I think you can add some more. Yeah it’s a little too much… It’s my problem with this story now, but I still hope one day I’ll have something like I loved before.

  1. I’ve never really got into Anita’s series. I did read the first book but for some reason I didn’t gel with it – and that was well before she started sleeping with everyone. Still glad you felt like it was better than some other issues…

  2. I think no as well. I think I’ve had enough of this series and will never come back. Where is Olaf? You mean LKH yet again left off a major threat to Anita? At this point, bringing back characters from the first 8 books won’t make me like this series any better. Thanks for the review 🙂

    • It’s interesting but there are two parts of the series. One good and one just about the Anita personal’s life and this one is really not so interesting… I miss Olaf! Not a really big threat, I think it’s difficult to really surpass the mother of the Darkness, it was so nice to have her.

  3. I am still a big fan of the series Melliane, and I also liked this book. I really dislike Richard, so I don’t mind him not showing up in this one. I did like the Asher storyline, and am glad he gets what he so richly deserves. He is way too needy and whiny. It’s just the f/f scenes I can do without. That is so not Anita.

    • I liked it, but it’s always too much about her personnal life and I was expecting a more complex plot. You’re right Asher deserves that, I wonder if he will come back now. The problem with these books is that when I write a review a have all the bad things in mind and it’s difficult to find the good ones.

  4. Really nice review, Melliane! Never heard of this author, sadly, but hmmm… happy that it was still a decent and fast read for you! The synopsis is rather intriguing for sure, and it’s great that the world created is a good one! Thanks for sharing another great review! <3
