Binding the Shadows by Jenn Bennett

Arcadia Bell, Book 3

Synopsis: Renegade mage and bartender Arcadia Bell has had a rough year, but now the door to her already unstable world is unhinging. When a citywide crime wave erupts, Cady’s demon-friendly tiki bar is robbed by Earthbounds wielding surreal demonic abilities that just flat-out shouldn’t exist. With the help of her devilishly delicious boyfriend, Lon Butler, Cady sets out to find the people who wronged her—but her targets aren’t the only ones experiencing unnatural metamorphoses. Can Cady track down the monsters responsible before the monster inside her destroys everything—and everyone—she loves? If she survives this adventure, one thing is certain: it’s last call for life as she knows it.

Review: I’m always waiting for a new Jenn Bennett book and this one is truly sublime, I’m really not disappointed. Once we get into the story, it is difficult to put it down until the end. I think it is a series  in constant evolution and each volume surprises us and delights us once again.

From the beginning of the story we fall right into the action, during a fight between Cady, Lon and a man with strange powers. A power that should not even be possible, and that surpasses all. But with his death, our two heroes think they’re done with this strange story, but it is far from the case. Indeed, a wave of crime falls on the city, all perpetrated by Earthbounds with unusual capabilities. Cady is of course full of questions about all that, but it takes a more personal turn when these people decide to rob her bar, while seriously injuring her best friend and partner. Our young heroine embarks on a manhunt determined to take revenge and recover the money they lost in the process. I was really curious to see what would happen and see who was behind it, and I confess that I didn’t expect this turn of the story. And the culprit was really well found. But this is not all, we have so many events in this story, we can not be bored for a second. It was really crazy. I’m sure everyone was like me, wondering a lot about Cady and her powers. Especially now that we see a change in her abilities and her nature. And yes! Finally we have some really interesting information! I was very surprised, once again I did not expect that at all. Our beloved heroine tries to understand the meaning of all these changes and I was looking forward to see what we would learn. But again this is not done (Yes, I know, a lot of things to come!). Indeed, we will be able to meet some new characters here, as the mother of the Lon’s ex-wife, his ex-wife and some others. I am quite surprised by all of them, they are very different from what I thought. It was nice to meet the protagonists we heard so much about in the previous novels, and I’m definitely not disappointed.

I’m sure you can understand that this is a very good new novel and it will be very difficult to wait for the next one in 2014. This is so far away and the next book will be, I’m sure, very exciting and fascinating. Although with such an end, it can not be otherwise! Many things are initiated here and we are surprised throughout the story. Of course all the characters we love are there, including Jupe. This boy is always a delight to read and is equal to himself whatever happens. He will always be there for Cady and help her, as well as all her friends. Arcadia will have in this novel to deal with her past and its consequences, events that she would never have suspected and we can only hope that things will work out for her so she could have the life she deserves, but it seems more complicated. New questions are raised and I am curious to know more of this adventures. A new sublime discovery, a nice mix of conspiracy, betrayal and magic. If you do not know this series yet, what are you waiting for? I really recommend it to all fans of urban fantasy!
