Interview – Linda Grimes & Concours/Giveaway (+traduction)

Welcome to Lina Grimes the author of the Ciel Halligan series. Thanks to her for answering our questions.

——-

Can you present yourself in a few words?

Just another martini-drinking wordsmith who loves to make readers laugh.

I have seen on your blog that you taught English for a time. What made you decide to write a novel?

Most of my students only read when they were threatened with bodily harm. Isn’t that enough reason to want to do something else? *grin*

I used to be an actress, too, until I realized I’m too introverted by nature to be totally comfortable on the stage. Writing novels is a great compromise—I can “perform” on the page. Bonus: Not only do I get to “direct,” I also get to play all the parts.

What kind of books do you read? Do you read other books when you are writing? Or not for fear of being influenced?

All kinds! Romances, mysteries, science fiction, urban fantasy, nonfiction (especially anything related to science—really, I’m a big nerd). I don’t tend to read a lot while I’m approaching a deadline, mainly because I don’t have time.

I don’t think writers can help but be influenced by what they read, and that’s probably a good thing. Ideally, if you read widely, and in many genres, all the influences mix up into a great new blend that’s all your own. It’s like cooking—if you give a bunch of chefs the same ingredients, they’ll each come up with a different recipe.

What do you love most about writing urban fantasy? Any other genre that appeals to you?

Urban fantasy gives my imagination the freedom to run where it wants. I also love UF readers—they’re some of the most responsive and dedicated out there.

Paranormal suspense appeals to me, too. I’m working on one now (in between Ciel Halligan books) that I’m hoping might amount to something. It’s a bit darker, not light and funny like readers are used to from me. We’ll see how it goes. Might have to publish it under a different name so any die-hard Ciel fans don’t wind up thinking WTF?!

What are you working on now? Will there be a next Ciel Halligan book? And if so, what can we expect?

The third Ciel Halligan book (THE BIG FIX) will be released in Spring 2015 (sometime in May, as it sits now). You can expect Ciel to get into even more trouble, this time in Hollywood. Billy and Mark are, of course, still complicating her personal life. (We should all have such problems, right?)

I’m currently drafting the fourth Ciel Halligan book (working title: FIXER UPPER, but that’s subject to change). After that, who knows?

Ciel is a colorful character who is able to end up in funny situations, is she like you?

Well, she’s younger than I am, and a lot shorter. 😉 I do like to fix other people’s problems for them, so I suppose we have that in common. But, on the whole, my lifestyle is a lot less, um, adventurous than Ciel’s. Thank God!

The 2 male characters are very interesting. A choice seems really difficult. Can you tell us a little more (for the persons who don’t know the series yet) about them?

It is a tough choice for Ciel—I think that’s what keeps it interesting.

Billy is her best “frenemy” from the time they were toddlers, who suddenly becomes a very real (not to mention hot) possibility as a love interest.

Mark is her big brother’s best friend, and Ciel’s crush from the time she met him when she was thirteen. He’s the embodiment of her adolescent fantasies. But now that he might actually be interested in her as a woman and not just a surrogate kid sister, will the real man live up to her fantasies?

Confusing, to say the least. But exciting? I hope so.

If the series should be adapted for film, which actors would you like to see play your characters?

That’s a tough one for me, because no one actor is exactly like Ciel, Billy, or Mark. The best I can do is offer up some “types.”

Ciel: a young Hannah Spearritt or Michelle Williams. Or maybe Britt Robertson—she’s young enough—if she’d be willing to cut her hair.

Hannah Spearritt

Billy: Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer, with maybe a touch of Callum Blue thrown in.

somerhalder young hollywood 01

Mark: a short-haired Charlie Hunnam or a young (and alive) Steve McQueen.

Outside of your characters, who is your favorite heroine? And who is your favorite hero?

Hands down, my favorite heroine ever is Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser, from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. She’s strong, pragmatic, independent, compassionate, opinionated…I could go on, but you get the idea. My favorite hero is from the same series of books: Jamie Fraser, the epitome of an eighteenth century highland Scot. I am beyond excited about the new STARZ TV series!

Ciel is a human chameleon, she can adapt her aura into an exact copy of another person. I find it quite unique. How did you come up with the inspiration? What appeals to you in the aura adaptors?

It sounds odd, but Ciel just showed up that way. When she appeared in my head, I knew she had this ability.

As for what appeals to me…well, who wouldn’t like to be able to change appearances in the blink of an eye? I think that would be so cool! Especially when I’m having a bad hair day.

If you had Ciel’s power for one day and could be the copy of someone, who would that be (and what would you do)? Queen Elizabeth? 😉

Ha-ha! No, I believe I’ll leave the Queen to Billy and Ciel. Personally, I wouldn’t mind filling for Deborra-Lee Furness (who happens to be Hugh Jackman’s wife) for a day. I’ll leave what I would do to your imagination. 😉

The world is about to end and you have to assemble your perfect apocalypse team with five fictional characters – who would that be?

Oh, good question! Hmm. Let’s see …

1. Well, Mark Fielding (my Mark from the Ciel Halligan books, that is). Because, hey, he’s a kick-ass CIA spook who can look like anyone. That would be handy in an apocalypse. Plus, he’s hot.

2. Billy (yes, my Billy) because see above. And he’s funny. If the world is ending, you might as well exit laughing. Plus, he’s hot.

3. Thor. Because come on, a Norse god has got to be helpful when your world is crumbling. When worse comes to worse, he could always take me back to his home world. Plus, he’s hot.

4. Loki. Because maybe a trickster could con our way out of the apocalypse somehow. Plus, he’s hot. (Are you sensing a theme here?)

5. Harry Potter. Because, hey, anyone who can defeat Voldemort shouldn’t have any trouble with a trifling little apocalypse. Plus…well, he’s too you for me to consider hot. Guess I’ll just have to keep the others entertained while Harry saves the world. 😉

(You may be wondering why I didn’t choose Ciel. If Ciel is around, why would Mark or Billy pay any attention to me? Duh.)

Thank you for inviting me back to your fantastic website!

Ciel Halligan, Book 1

Synopsis: The start of an original new urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel HalliganSnagging a marriage proposal for her client while on an all-expenses-paid vacation should be a simple job for Ciel Halligan, aura adaptor extraordinaire. A kind of human chameleon, she’s able to take on her clients’ appearances and slip seamlessly into their lives, solving any sticky problems they don’t want to deal with themselves. No fuss, no muss. Big paycheck.

This particular assignment is pretty enjoyable… that is, until Ciel’s island resort bungalow is blown to smithereens and her client’s about-to-be-fiancé is snatched by modern-day Vikings. For some reason, Ciel begins to suspect that getting the ring is going to be a tad more difficult than originally anticipated.

Going from romance to rescue requires some serious gear-shifting, as well as a little backup. Her best friend, Billy, and Mark, the CIA agent she’s been crushing on for years—both skilled adaptors—step in to help, but their priority is, annoyingly, keeping her safe. Before long, Ciel is dedicating more energy to escaping their watchful eyes than she is to saving her client’s intended.

Suddenly, facing down a horde of Vikings feels like the least of her problems.

Ciel Halligan, book 2

Synopsis: The second installment of the original urban fantasy series starring human chameleon Ciel Halligan

Ciel Halligan, an aura adaptor with a chameleon-like ability to step into the lives of her clients and fix their problems for them — as them — is working a job at the National Zoo with her boyfriend, Billy, and his ten-year-old sister, Molly. It’s supposed to be a quick fix, giving her time to decide if it’s wise to pursue the romantic relationship her charming scoundrel of a best friend wants, or if she should give Mark, the CIA spook she’s crushed on since hormones first rattled her pubescent brain, a chance to step up to the plate.

Molly has already begun to show signs of being an adaptor herself. She’s young for it, but she’s always been precocious, so it’s not impossible. What is impossible is her taking on the form of the baby orangutan she touches — adaptors can only project human auras. Until now, apparently. Worse, Molly is stuck in ape form. She can’t change herself back.

Escaping from the zoo with their new baby orang, Ciel and Billy head for NYC and the only person they know can help: Ciel’s brother James, a non-adaptor scientist who’s determined to crack the aura adaptor genetic code. But when Billy winds up in jail, accused of attempted murder, Ciel begins to suspect Molly’s unusual adapting ability is more than just a fluke. Who’s been experimenting on Molly, and what do they hope to gain? And will Ciel survive to find out?

  3. CHARLIE HUNNAM!!!! Yes to him playing all the parts. ALL THE PARTS I SAY! Clearly I’m a fan! I’m also a fan of romantic setups that involve having a crush on a brother’s best friend, those suck me in every time so I can’t help but root for Mark. And a huge YES to Claire. LOVE HER!!! I’m so in love with the TV adaptation, I think they’ve done an amazing job with both Claire and Jamie!

  4. Ohh, Linda and I must be long lost twins! I’d be Hugh Jackman’s wife before all else! Honesty, is there any other choice?
And I think it’s true that writers have to be influenced by what they read. An author friend of mine reads everything but the genre she’s currently writing, which also makes sense in a way.
    Great interview!

  5. Somehow UF writers seem to be the coolest and funniest people. I loved interviews you did here 🙂 It’s really amazing what she said about not only playing but also directing parts while writing. Great interview, Melliane 🙂

  6. Wonderful interview and post. Loved the character picks.
I’ve been so intrigued by this series and very eager to read, it sounds fantastic.
Thanks for the chance to win.

  7. Thanks for this awesome interview, the author is hilarious – love her Hugh Jackman’s wife answer – now that’s one I wouldn’t have thought of, but pretty clever response, I’ll say 😉 I also love it when authors “cast” their novels, it’s always interesting to see who they’d choose, though I prefer to know after I read a book 🙂

  8. Ha, I remember a time when I wanted to be an actree too, like Stephanie Faris just said. I was too taken by school to actually go to auditions though, hmmm….but I also wanted so many things. Man, I am so glad I changed. XD Awesome interview and yum IAN. xx

  9. Many thanks to everyone for the kind comments, and for entering the contest. Good luck to you all!

Also, a big thank you to Melliane for inviting me back to this wonderful blog, and to everyone who contributed the questions. Such a fun place to visit! 🙂
