The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic, Book 1

Synopsis: Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses. It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.

And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

Review: I heard about this series and it was a while since it was on my wishlist. So I was delighted to see it translated into French!

Ivy is a witch, but not an ordinary one. So when an unfortunate encounters bounds her with a high-level wizard as a partner, she realizes that her life will never be the same. Facing the Order that falsely expelled her when she was younger, she will have to work with the charming Winter to try to resolve an investigation that may be even more complicated than expected. Forced to put her powers to use while doing everything to show that she is not there of her own free will, our heroine will face many events!

I had a little trouble getting attached to Ivy at first, I did not find her really nice, but finally, little by little I enjoyed seeing what she was going to do and to her evolve. Her replicas are sometimes really scathing. It was very funny to see the interactions between the two characters and I was curious to find out who the culprit was. However, I must confess that something has bothered me on the level of the translation. The narrative is in the past, but there are a lot of verbs in the present and I stumbled a lot on the change of time that was not homogeneous. I think it’s also what made it a bit more complicated to get into the story.

Other than that, it was a pretty cool discovery and I had a good time. I wonder that Ivy will book us for the future.

This one was a fun book for me, too. I don’t think I was delighted by her so much as the humorous lines she had.
Glad the mistakes in verb tense didn’t completely confuse you. Hopefully, they’ll edit that for later and future books.
